I can't get it by a regular route either.

We had the issue of using indices a few pages back. Does anyone know if they are allowed on the show, as long as you're using the available numbers?

That's the only way I can solve this problem, as follows:

25 + 7 = 32
32 squared (i.e. using one of the 2's) = 1024
9*(2+1) = 27
1024-27 = 997

No indices are not allowed. You can only use simple division, addition, subtraction and multiplication. Stuff that can be done by the mind and not by calculator.

Thanks for that. It was the only way I could get to 997, but I had a feeling that it wasn't really allowed.

We've been puzzling about the 997 one I put up for a while now. Are we beaten? Anyone care to put up a new one?
