    (5 * 5) + 9 = 34
    25 - 2 = 23 * 34 = 782 - 1 = 781

    ((25*3)*(7+1)+(9-5))

    1 5 7 8 10 25 (510)
    Umm ((5+7+8)*25)+10=510

    Let's do it:

    2, 4, 6, 8, 25, 75

    Target: 662

I don't have time to make fancy-ass Boro ones so I bet the solution will appear within two minutes of me posting this...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,560 ✭✭✭Boro

    75 * 8 = 600
    25 + 6 = 31 * 2 = 62 + 600 = 662

    75 + 50 = 125
    -(7-3) = 121
    * 5 = 605
    +3 = 608.......

Can people please stop posting more than one number from the [25, 50, 75, 100] large number pool? Just choose one of those.

If this is meant to mimic countdown, they can pick as many large numbers as they wish!

In the show itself there are cards facing downwards containing the numbers that can be selected. There is one each of 25, 50, 75, 100 and 2 each of the numbers 1 to 10. So, the multiples of 25 up to 100 can be in your selection only once or not at all and the smaller ones up to a maximum of twice.

Read the rules at the start of the thread

Yeah and I don't think any has broken them in a while in fairness. It's perfectly valid to have, say, 1, 2, 2, 5, 25, 75 but invalid to have say 1, 3, 3, 5, 50, 50 because you can't have any individual multiple of 25 more than once but you can use different multiples of 25 more than once. Theoretically that means you could have 4 instances of multiples of 25 - i.e. 1, 7, 25, 50, 75, 100 but, in practice, I think it's best limited to a choice of two.

Maybe im getting it wrong then, but i was under the impression that you could only have one multiple of 25 in your 6 numbers. Appologies for jumping down peoples throats.
    The Numbers Games

The numbers game is quite simple really. There are 24 cards, each with numbers on them, turned face down, and placed in rows on a wooden frame. The top row has 4 cards with numbers 25, 50, 75, and 100 on it – all placed in position at random. The next three rows contain the numbers 1 to 10 twice – again placed at random. Contestants have to choose 6 cards which are then turned over to reveal their numbers. Using these six numbers, the contestants have to reach a mathematical target set by CECIL (Countdown’s Electronic Calculator in Leeds). CECIL is really a random number generator and the target it chooses is not based on the numbers that have been drawn – it is just a random number ranging from 100 to 999. The contestants have to get as close to the target as possible using only the 4 basic principles of maths - addition, subtraction, division and multiplication. Each number can only be used once and only whole numbers can be used. Trying to divide 10 by 4 to get 2 and a half would not be allowed. All or any of the numbers can be used, but contestants do not have to use all the numbers.

    Scoring is as follows:
    Exact target – 10 points
    Within 5 of target – 7 points
    Within 10 of target – 5 points.
Any further than 10 from the target does not score and, as with the letters, the nearest person gets the points, unless both contestants are equidistant from the target.

Thought you could only choose one card from the top row.

    Grrr, a tough one ;)

    ( 5 * (3 + 1) + 7 + 2 ) * 25 = 725
    Still needs a little work...

I don't want to start an argument but...
Contestants have to choose 6 cards which are then turned over to reveal their numbers.

Its just that the popular choice is 5 small numbers and one large. Its perfectly valid and i've seen it on many occasions that a contestant picks 2 large numbers ie. from the top row and 4 small numbers. I've never heard Carol V tell them off for it either.... or tell them to read the rules without reading them herself. ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,560 ✭✭✭Boro

Do you ever hear Carol asking them to read the rules? No.. The reason? They bring the contestants into a little room before every show. In that room are twelve little monkeys. The monkeys have stanley knives and lead pipes. The contestants are told that if they question the system, they will be locked into that little room. True story!

Anyway, as to reading the rules, i read them. Several times. And yet i still managed to misunderstand them. Consider me chastised.

Now get solving my latest brain bender!

I guess I didn't clarify the rules as much as I should have when I clarified the rules in the first post. I didn't mean "one large number", I meant "each large number can only be included a maximum of once". (by the same note, when I typed "So, the multiples of 25 up to 100 can be in your selection only once or not at all and the smaller ones up to a maximum of twice." I didn't mean that you could only have two small numbers, I meant that you couldn't have the same number 3 or more times). The rules are supposed to mimic the ones on the show. I'll add another bit to try to make it perfectly clear.
