As far as Reality Search For A Star thingys go its just as good as Pop Idol, Pop Stars etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,513 ✭✭✭Sleipnir

    I hate them all.
    Brutal, mindless television.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,571 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

The first half of the series is always entertaining - lots of clips of talentless gimps 'having a go'. Second half (once they've picked their final 12) isn't as good.

Phil Coulter smashing that untuned guitar last Sunday was the highlight of the series so far (the look on the guitarist's face was priceless).

Phil (after smashing the guitar): NOW sing something.
Guitarist (in strong cavan accent): I can't sing without my f**king guitar!

    - Dave.

what ?? he smashed his guitar ?!!? guitars mean a lot to people, whatamuppet

I get the feeling that was staged ... although I didn't see it.

Your-A-Star, like so much more of RTÉ's "home-grown" productions (unfortunately), is an awful waste of license payers' valuable money.

    Stick with radio, D'Arcy...

I've never actually watched Your A Star?, but I saw an ad for it on RTE One a few weeks ago with some fella taking off Christy Moore & he was great.

I meant to watch that episode, but never got around to it.

I'd enjoy it a lot more if they changed the name of the programme to "You're a star".

I saw that as well but it looked completely staged. If it wasnt then yer man should have floored phil, poxy wanker breaking his guitar. If it was staged then yer man should get an oscar for the look on his face.

As the credits rolled Ray Darcy said that Phil replaced the guitar and they were all good friends again, but later on the results segment he said it was a joke (with no further explanation).

I thought George Murphy who sang Raglan Road in the style of Luke Kelly was a breath of fresh air. It will be interesting to see how far he gets as he's not really boy band material.

2 of these "Judges" were involved with Popstars. Six enjoyed much success.

In a year where many excellent Irish albums came out (Bellx1, Dave Course, Trills, Woodstar etc) - Why is RTE giving this air-time?

This from the guy who was fighting in the twins' corner during the last Your A Star? :)

    (Sorry, Cork... couldn't resist!) :):D:p;)

I like You're A Star- I watched most of the series last year, had a thing about Michael Leonard actually!! :)
It's not as good this year but at least they got rid of Kerry Katona. Phil and Linda know a bit about the music industry so they should pick someone good for the Eurovision, not a big Louis Walsh fan though!

    - Dave.

Mikey Harte is appearing on the Lyrics Board Christmas Edition tonight.

Would the twins have done better? I don't know.

I think that they are many Irish bands who don't get much time on RTE TV or Radio. The Dunphy Show did make inroads putting Irish bands back on TV giving them exposure.

These reality type of shows while entertaining & popular are bland.

That said - there was a guy last week from Dublin who broke the mould a little.(George). Hope he wins. At least, he tried to get away from bland formula pop.

Cork in fairness enough of the sticking up for the twins. They were mediocre singers and the only reason most people watched was because they were pretty damn fine looking. That said a pair of twins is a Eurovision friendly gimmick which probably would have gotten us alot of votes from those camp mainlanders, especially if their song was utterly ridicilous. Theyre on a completely different mindset to us. RTE,and the whole country, assumed that we could win with what Weve Got the World Was-very much in a similiar vein to Irish winners in the 80s and all. However for whatever reason since then the mainlanders have just went completely mad,as proven by the high ranking of the austrian lad who was singing with cardboard cut out cattle IIRC. But if somebody in Ireland came up with a ridicilous camp song none of the public would vote for it to go to the eurovision. So basically its a no win situation-the irish wont send something stupid enough to win,and the europeans wont like what we term decent. I think the Brits will send the cheeky girls in the near future,as its a near guaranteed winner,or at least top 3.
Actually know one of the finalists myself(Philip Noone-vote for him or Ill burn your family). When he told me that he was in it I had all these ideas of everybody going to the Helix cheering him on and afterwards its off to some VIP club place in Dublin to hob with the nobs. Instead they sell tickets to mere commoners who dont even know the contestants for 20 odd yoyos each. Fook them!

Nah the guitar thing wasn't staged. The reason I know this is because I know the lad in question. RTE/Coulter did give him money to get a new guitar though.

Hang on - some musicians get sentimentally attached to instruments so you can't always replace it with money ...

I would agree normally but any resemblance between the two lads in question and musicians was purely coincidental :D

Yeah besides the guitar he had was a piece of **** which probably cost about 40 euro. I bet his new one is a more expensive instrument.

Complete cringe TV. Watching a load of talentless gimps who refuse to accept, despite overwhelming evidence, that they can't sing is almost my definition of a nightmare existence. That's not even to mention the muppets who break down and weep when they don't get through...so your whole goal in life was to partake in the Eurovision? Well then I'm sorry you didn't go through either. It would be better if they all went to the Eurovision and fulfilled their life aims...at least then they might píss off and kill themselves instead of wasting good air.

Is there any point in running the remaining 10 episodes? Looks like George has it sewn up..... The audience were behind him (chanting his name during the results), and he is genuinely talented.

    Why drag it out? :)

    - Dave.

After tonight's episode, all the final 12 performers have sung live on TV, and they all pretty much stink!!

The standard is a lot lower than last year, and the whole show just comes off supremely amatuer-ish and the crowd need to shut the hell up during the results shows.

In saying all that I'll still tune in next Sunday to see how the singing goes with everyone's 2nd time out, and also how the votes will go now that all 11 remaining acts are in the one show. Could care less who wins @ this stage though!

PS- American Idol 3 is starting next Saturday on TV3 @ 6pm, with 2 hours of auditions. All those terrible singers who think they're fantastic getting brought back down to Earth, can't wait!! :D

george is good i'll admit that but somehow i got a feeling he won't win the whole thing.

does ireland want to host the 2005 eurovision??

To be honest I thought the guy from Donegal last week who got voted out was the best so far. He sang Drops of Jupiter by Train.

I think that george just got a lot of support tonight because the piano guy botched up his intro twice.

Incidentally that piano player is terrible.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,255 ✭✭✭TCamen

Yeah the guy who was voted off last week was pretty good. Those girls who MURDERED 'Feels Like Home' by Chantal Kreviazuk should've got the boot. Incidentally, they didn't seem to know/risk trying to pronounce her name last Sunday, opting to say merely that the song was from Dawson's Creek, whatever you twits!

George....I think he's decent enough, but whether he'd win the Eurovision I dunno, though if he got a very Irish sounding song he might do it. Eimear Quinn 'The Voice' in '96 was fairly Celtic and that was very popular in the voting. Considering that Mickey Harte had a very Eurovision-friendly song (or what was typically seen as being so) and didn't fare too well last year, ya can never tell what'll get votes, though the Turkish song was quite ethic and that went down well, so mebbe an guy like George with an Irish song could score.
Being from Dublin, George is more likely to have (loud) supporters in the audience every week in The Helix than the others, but whether he'll top the poll when all 11 performers sing next week, who knows, Mickey Harte wasn't a clear favourite til the tail end of last season!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,641 ✭✭✭✭Elmo

The guy that was voted out this week was a dead cert to be voted out. I can see either phil and jill being vote out next week or the guy that sung "..... they paved paradise and put up a parking lot....."

Yes these shows are as bad as one another but Fame Academy get the top prize as worst talent search.

I never get this Mickey Harte got into 11 place. Yet so did ten other countries. I would have said he came joint 5th which he did, rather then 11th.

Anyway all of the singers are better off without the euro song.

Mickey Harte was crap and is pretty well forgotten about at this stage, except in barns in the back of beyond. The talent on the show is better this year, i just hope they can be given a decent song to sing for Eurovision, the selection for the final 3 last year were appalling. There is no such thing as a "Eurovision song", it needs to be a good song by any standard to win it. Upto now this guy George two slow classic songs and he has done a great job but I wonder how he would fare with a more uptempo song. That guy who came second last night was great too.

I don't think so, did you hear any of his other stuff. I though they were good songs. He got his album in to no. 2 spot, and his second single was quite good IMO.

Unlike Six who should all be shot.

as like the other crappy shows like this im fed up watching karaoke live on tv with people that are never going to go anywhere in the music business...

The music business nowadays is a sham anyway, throwing such mindless dross in our faces week in week out and quite frankly im fùckin sick of it altogether...

Only saw a bit of your man George's thing but I though Nell whatever "her" name is was out of line saying he's a "star". The bloke did a great Bob Dylan impression but that was about the height of it.

I was in the audience last night to support Philip Noone (my mates cousin).

I think the girl from Cork will win it. She has a great voice and has that eurovision look.

George is good but he tends to sing the songs in the accent of the original performers..i.e. Sounding like Ronnie Drew when he sang Raglan Road, and like Bob Dylan last night.

He was getting the biggest cheer but thats because about 40 of his mates were in the audience. I'd say he will get into the top five.

George is not a great singer, he's a great Impresonator. you would never of thought he was the same guy who sang Raglen rd, (which IMO was dreadful.) I have to agree with Neil (whatever her name is) they were all singing in American accents and that really pee's me off. If george sang in his accent he would just sound like a little scum bag trying to sing. None of them are very good except that little girl with guitar from last week

Was it not the guy who sung Big Yellow Taxi who got voted out this week?! Its hard to tell who is good at the minute or who is a good impersonator but whoever makes to the finals will be found out as they'll have an original song and will have to impress on their own and won't be able to impersonate anyone.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,255 ✭✭✭TCamen

Yeah the guy who sang 'Big Yellow Taxi' was voted off last night.

Re: accents, I thought yer man Chris Doran's inability to pronounce his 'th' s more annoying that the faux American accents most of them sang with, mostly cos he wasn't a terrible singer, but the problem with the 'th' s ruined it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,641 ✭✭✭✭Elmo

but the problem with the 'th' s ruined it.

How do you live in a country where most people don't pronounce their th's

I don't think the guy singing big yellow taxi was voted out because i remember think it was between him and another guy. Oh I dont know.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 201 ✭✭sparkite

i have to say that the talent is way lower than last years.the blonde girl who sang the "how do i live without you" songy thingy was good and i was well impressed with the way george managed to continue singing.either way i cant see myself watching it every week like i did last yr.who was that NELL bitch.she said the same thing over and over.20 quid says she wont be asked back to judge

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,641 ✭✭✭✭Elmo

I think the bring a new judge in each week. so nell prob won't be back.

She was right unfortunately they were all sing in bad american accents but then unfortunately some of them were sing song that need bad american accents.

and by the way louise no Van Morrisson doesn't with an american accent.

And that was who was voted out this week the guy who sung the van morrisson song. Or else it was between him and the guy sing Big Yellow Taxi.

Either way he out next week.

Hmmm, difficult. I roll my eyes a lot, personally.

Maybe we should bring back the ð. Or the þ. Or both. Or just beat people with sticks until they figure out that the h isn't there just for the laugh (it's not just in English, people do it in Irish too but we've become accustomed to that in Munster)

Big Yellow taxi guy is out.

    Van Morrison guy in.

Next week's guest judge is Samantha Mumba who'll be in for Linda Martin
