Krull or Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan, although James Horner rips himself off constantly. Also, Thin Red Line (shame about the film).

I wonder has anyone here seen the Japanese film, 'Swallowtail Butterfly'? Anyway, the (instrumental) soundtrack to that is wonderful (there was another soundtrack album from the same film with songs).

One I can't wait to get is 'Belleville Rendezvous' which was on in the IFI a couple of months back. A toe-tapping jazz-fest that one.

Get Shorty was quite an original, one of my favourites too.

ooohhh... i'm a big fan of soundtracks, so it's hard to pin down a favourite....

among them is definitely the amelie soundtrack- it captures so well the spirit of the movie, and the music itself is just so uplifting and life-affirming (sorry to sound like oprah there!)

another favourite is the English Patient soundtrack, because it features every kind of music i love, from a Bach aria to Hungarian folk music to 1940s jazz to this beautiful sweeping orchestral score. perfection!

My Fav. Silent soundtrack would be the one Queen put on Fritz Lang's masterpiece - so good they destroyed all the models to stop them being reused in low budged flick.
    Metropolis

    Manhunter - Micheal Mann
    Blade Runner - Vangeless (SP)

The blue danube in 2001 seems slow on the screen - but when shown in the cinema I'm told it was so widescreen that the ship moved gracefully across.

Apocoplyse now - Can't beat a bit of Wagner ...

Balls to everyone who didn't say Koyaanisqatsi.

Less balls to that dude who said Grosse Pointe Blank.

edit: spelling 'koyaanisqatsi' when blind drunk is not a whole lot of fun

Not a big buyer of soundtracks, but Kill Bill is excellent, as are all of Tarantino's soundtracks.

I downloaded this about 2 days ago. It's rather good. A song called Blackout on the new Muse album reminded me of it, and I had to hear it...

Mine would have to be either Forrest Gump (OST), or The Piano.

    Trainspotting
    High Fidelity
    Pulp Fiction
The Commitments (1 rather than 2)

    In no particular order.

2 that havent been mentioned are Natural Born Killers and The Mission. I'd like to add my vote to Judgement Night mentioned above.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 857 ✭✭✭davros

One I didn't mention was 'In the Mood For Love' because the soundtrack album has a whole bunch of old Chinese popular music mixed in that, frankly, is not terribly accessible.

But the film is on Channel 4 on Saturday, at 23:25. I challenge anyone to watch it and not find yourself humming Nat King Cole songs in Spanish for the week afterwards ("Quizas, Quizas, Quizas!").

There is also a very striking string piece called 'Yumeji's Theme' that was pinched from another film altogether. It's right to the fore throughout 'In the Mood for Love'.

If you want to see cinematic perfection, check out Channel 4 on Saturday night. And, incidentally, the director Wong Kar-Wai has just wrapped up shooting on his much-anticipated film '2046', which is a sequel to 'In the Mood'. So you might want to see the first, before you see the second.

I would distinguish between sound tracks and musical scores.

    Sound Tracks :
    Singles
    Spawn
    Trainspotting
    Pulp Fiction

Musical Scores - there are several composers whose work I like:
Danny Elfman - Batman, Army of Darkness (too many to list here)
    Brad Fiedel - Terminator, T2
    Ennio Morricone - The Mission
Basil Poledouris - Starship Troopers, Hunt for Red October
John Williams - Star Wars, Indiana Jones

i think the film who made a revolution in the soundtrack would be "easy rider", also ennio morricone musics.
as i'm a romantic, i like "the piano", "in the mood for love", "l'amant" soundtracks:)

and all of the almodovar's films.

and finally of course "apocalyspe now", pure master piece!

Lost Highway, Twin Peaks, Blue Velvet etc... basically anything with David Lynch and Angelo Badalamenti along with Platoon.

Cameron Crowe does good soundtracks aswell with his HUGE music knowlegde

More recently the score and two songs that David Byrne did for Young Adam are amazing.

    movie soundtracks?

Big Lebowski because it's the best film ever ever ever- ever y'hear EVER!
Spawn- worst film ever but some really kicking music in it.
    Ditto for Judgement Night.
Oh and the Wicker Man had some mad folk stuff on it.

    Scores?

I see Elfman is mentioned for Batman and his piece of Army of Darkness, I agree.
Poledouris' Conan, yes, and Red October.
    2001 a space odessy
    Everything Ennio Morricone done.
Everything Bernard Herman done (esp Taxi Driver and Vertigo)
Every thing John barry done, esp "You Only Live Twice, Game of Death, The Black Hole and Dances With Wolves")
    Alan Silvestri's Predator,
2001, Jerry Goldsmith's Alien (wouldn't have been os intense without it)
Wojech Kilar (spelling?)- Bram Stokers Dracula,
    Dust Bros' Fight Club,
Clint Manzell - Pi & Requim for a Dream
    Vangellis- Bladerunner.
    Eric Serra- 5th Element
    RZA- Ghostdog
Hans Zimmer- Gladiator & Black Hawk Down

man I should avoid these threads like a plague I always come across as some frustrated "High Fidelity" type character, which, admiteddly, I am.
