    From mediabullet:
Dual recording "Days away" for Sky+ users
Sky's technical department have informed us this afternoon that Sky+ users should start getting their long awaited software upgrades from Thursday 4th December. This will enable the dual recording facility as well as some other enhancements. It may take a day or two for all of the software to download to your box, but if you get up in the morning and your box has reset to EPG 998 then you should have the software on board.

That sounds good - might actually get it when it comes through. Though am I right in thinking that you have to be watching one of the programmes that you're recording, if you're recording two, or can you record two stations and watch another?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,604 ✭✭✭irishgeo

Record two programmes at the same time i assume you dont have to be watching one your recording.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,722 ✭✭✭Thorbar

How much space does the box have? How many minutes can you record?

Or if you're mechanically minded, you can change the HDD to a bigger one and hold much more! (note that not any HDD will do, so research would be needed first) :)

Damn I would like Sky+ but I don't want any premium channels

Hot off the presses from Media Bullet -

    Sky+ Software updates downloading today!

you will be able to record up to two channels at once whilst either watching one of the recording feeds, or watching something from the Planner that has been previously recorded.

The latest software version, sky+1.26.v2 also should fix some stability issues which have been affecting certain viewers.

The software rollout should be complete by the end of the afternoon.

this is great news. Can anyone confirm that they have recieved the software update yet or will us 2nd class sky citizens have to wait a bit longer than our UK counterparts as is usually the case?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,092 ✭✭✭ShaneOC

No we won't have to wait. I can confirm that I now have dual recording on my Sky+ box (version 1). The box was reset last night.

From reading the "other forum" there are some people experiencing problems with playing back recorded programs after the software update.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,726 ✭✭✭✭DMC

Just changed the title of the thread.

    guess what

no dual record for me  hopefully a software upgrade will sort it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,522 ✭✭✭digitaldr

I am just trying out dual record. You need to watch one of the programs you're recording but you can always play back a previously recorded one instead (while recording two channels).

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 28,128 ✭✭✭✭Mossy Monk

after a forced upgrade still no Dual Record

    maybe tomorrow :(

So just to make sure I'm getting this right, there's only two feeds in from the satellite, and so you can't have two recording while watching another live programme?

    Exactly!

Sky+ was great but now with DR it's amazing.

Just unplugged the VCR and dumped it in the attic.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,015 ✭✭✭Ludo

Now if there was only enough quality programmes on.
What are the odds that two programes worth recording are on at the same time with the amount of crap out there :-)

    Always a complaint isn't there...

I must be missing something, but why would you want to record two programs at the one time while watching one of them?- someone give me an example pls

something which has happened to me a few times

    a) i am not in the house and there may be a film i want to see on one channel and a documentary on another channel at the same time. Dual Record would be handy for this eventuality

    b) i am recording something whilst watching something else, but someone else in the house may also want to see both but arent there

i am still waiting for the upgrade Sky

Also DR gets round the problem of overlaps between 2 programmes on different channels (especially useful for movies and programmes on BBC 1 & 2 which often overlap by several minutes).

you can also watch a previously recorded programme while 2 others are recording. Using it last night and it's excellent. If you try to view a live programme other than the 2 you are already recording you will get a warning message asking you to cancel a recording first. All we need now are Channel 4 and UTV and we're sorted.

One problem I have noticed with Sky+ is recording to consecutive programs on the same channel...it doesnt handle this too well.
For Example...Recording the double header of Will and Grace on Living.
    Set them both to record.
The recording of the first episode ends after the second episode has started due to the buffer settings.
The recording of the second episode misses the start as a result...I wonder if DR will sort this annoying issue.
The only I could do it up to yesterday was to use a manual recording.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,092 ✭✭✭ShaneOC

I have had no such problems. As far as I know the buffering checks if a second recording is starting immediately after the first and adjusts itself accordingly.

i get that problem with 3rd Rock From The Sun and Roseanne on Paramount. the beginning of Roseanne is usually at the end of the 3rd Rock From the Sun recording. not so much the end of the world or anything but annoying

I thought someone said that you HAD to watch a previously recorded program at the same time as you are dual recording .

    You have 3 options.

    1. Record 2 programmes while you're out
    2. Record 2 programmes while watching one that you are recording
    3. Record 2 programmes and watch a previously recorded programme

Just noticed that they have also sorted out the sound flags so that programmes in Dolby Surround (eg. The Simpsons) is decoded correctly by the home cinema amp.

    Which is nice. :)

I wonder what other little fixes were included in the upgrade...

this is one of the very rare times i am gonna say 'thanks sky!'

After January you will have to pay Sky €750 per year to get this service "free".
Is it really that good?
The underlying technology is 6 years old and is starting to look its age to be honest.

the way it is with me is

my old digibox was on its last legs so i needed a new one anyway and everyone in the house agreed Sky+ was the way to go after a little persuasion. we will always have at least 2 premium channels with Sky Sports 1 and Sky Sports 2 anyway so it works out nicely for this house

but you would have been paying €600 a year anyway if you haven't got a Sky+ box so your logic is flawed. Granted, Sky is expensive but you're not paying 'Extra' if you already had 2 or more premium channels.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 578 ✭✭✭Owenw

Or (assuming you already have Sky) you could continue with a non-premium channel subscription and pay the additional €15 monthly fee for the Sky+ service which works out to €180 per annum.

Still no dual record for me yet on my Sky+ V1 box (even after forced updates)! :(

still no Dual Record for me either  it would have been so handy last night

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,967 ✭✭✭JDxtra

I will wait until I see it officially advertised as an availabale feature before calling them. If I call now, they will probably deny all knowledge of dual record!

...it's probably a phased roll out anyways: everybody else first, then myself and Mossy Monk if all goes well... :)

Sky told me today that they are sending out an addendum to our instruction manual on how to use Dual recording

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,070 ✭✭✭neilc

Say I paused live tv, is there any way to then save this to the personal planner. If so how. It happened to me last night, someone called so i paused tv. As I was at the door for a while SWMBO changed channel and without realising she deleted my paused program.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,092 ✭✭✭ShaneOC

I have not tried it, but I have read that if you have a programme paused and you press select then you get the option to save it to the planner.

I'm not in front of the box now but if I recall rightly, just press Record in pause mode to access the Save Live Pause stuff.
