Hi there wondering if anyone could help. Just picked myself up a Nokia 6600, must say it great and feature rich. However I am having problems setting it up to access either Dial up Wap, GPRS or MMS.

I have read through the settings Here and these are roughly the same settings as I have.

    E-Merge GPRS WAP
    Connection Name: GPRS WAP
    Data Bearer: GPRS
    Access Point: wap.vodafone.ie
    Username: dublin
    Prompt Password: No
    Password: dublin
    Authentication: Normal
    Homepage: wap.vodafone.ie

    OPTIONS -> ADVANCED SETTINGS

    Phone IP Address: Automatic
    Primary name server: 213.233.128.19
    Secondary name server: 213.233.128.1
    Proxy serv. Address: 10.24.59.100
    Proxy port number: 9201

    E-MERGE
    Connection Name: E-merge
    Data Bearer: Data call
    Dial-up number: +353872292222
    Username: dublin
    Prompt Password: No
    Password: dublin
    Authentication: Normal
    Homepage: wap.e-merge.ie

    OPTIONS -> ADVANCED SETTINGS

    Phone IP Address: Automatic
    Primary name server: 213.233.128.19
    Secondary name server: 213.233.128.1
    Proxy serv. Address: 10.24.59.100
    Proxy port number: 80

Have been talking to vodafone and finally got on to someone in the tech department. Once again they said phone was not supported yet, They havent even gotten a model to start testing on yet. So they dont know what settings are needed.

Have talked to Nokia tech support. They said this has been a big problem i th UK as the networks need to tweak their settings server side to allow the 6600 to connectand only networks that have approved teh model have done this yet.

Have looked at the article on o2 settings for 6600 and was wondering if anyone has a suggestion on how to:

!: Connect to some WAP gateway- prefaribly Vodafone IRL. Problem might be that Vodafone WAP gateway does not support WAP 2.0 (But though 7250i was 2.0)

2: connect to GPRS access point. If can connect via dial up to wap then any accessponit to use Opera browser.

any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Also forgot to say.

    I am on a contract

    The error messages

    Connecting via GPRS
The phone connectes. G symbol stops flashing, G revolves around globe symbol as if it is waiting/downloading data. From looking at the data logs I see teh phone is passing data to server however no data is being returned.

    In the end ERROR:
    Service Timed Out

    Connecting Via Dial Up
Phone trys to connect via E-Merge and just get System Error

I think you hit the nail on the head, the 6600 is a WAP 2.0 device.

Right now I don't know that any of the networks support this.

When you hit 'connect' (or whatever) and you get the G with the spinning the globe, you've probably got an active PDP context i.e. the APN is valid and you have an IP address on the handset but as your settings are pointing to port 9201 I don't think it'll work which mght explain the 'service timed out' error.
WAP 2.0 should use TCP/IP all the way from the handset and not the WAP stack. The problem might be that your phone it trying to make a TCP connection to a UDP port. If vodafone have a WAP 2.0 gateway it may well be using some other port number - I think the 6600 assumes this is 8080 by default?
If/when it is supported by the network it *may* require a new APN, proxy IP address etc....

wireless http as we call it should be on port 8080

as to whether they have a gateway that supports it is another issue?

any one know who provided the wap gateway for vodafone ireland?

Surely the handset is backwardly compatible with earler WAP releases.

Try setting the Phone IP Address to Dynamic and leave the Primary and Secondary DNS address as 0.0.0.0

    Settings name – WAP GPRS
    Homepage – http://wap.e-merge.ie/
    Session mode – Permanent
    Connection Security – Off
    Data bearer – GPRS
    Bearer Settings
    GPRS access point – wap.vodafone.ie
    IP address – 10.24.59.100
    Authentication type – Normal
    Login type – Automatic
    Username – dublin
    Password – dublin

Try configuring it for CSD if that does not work to see if you can connect that way.

    Settings name – WAP Home
    Homepage – http://wap.e-merge.ie/
    Session mode – Permanent
    Connection Security – Off
    Data bearer – GSM data
    Bearer Settings
    Dialup number - +353872292222
    IP address – 10.24.59.100
    Authentication type – Normal
    Data call type – ISDN
    Data call speed – 9600
    Login type – Automatic

    Don't think so :/

AFAIK Nokia has given the two fingers to WAP 1.x on newer handsets, so the operators can't sell them (or at least approve them) untill they have a WAP 2.0 gateway 'cos they just won't work!

VFI dont currently have a WAP 2.0 gateway, but it is in the pipeline. Sometime early next year from what I remember.

I checked this out. Manchine was spot on, Nokia WAP 2.0 enabled devices wont be able to access WAP services based on the WAP 1.x gateway.

With Opera - or your POP/IMAP email accounts try to connect try either of the connections below (Note: the services need to be switched on for your account if not already done so - caling Voda Data Support should get them enabled 1850 287 000)...

For GPRS on full Internet - not WAP, your account would need to be enabled for the Vodafone ISP 'full internet' access point first, then try this:

    Connection Name: Voda ISP GPRS
    Data Bearer: GPRS
    Access Point: isp.vodafone.ie
    Username: vodafone
    Prompt Password: No
    Password: vodafone
    Authentication: Normal

    OPTIONS -> ADVANCED SETTINGS

    Phone IP Address: Automatic
Primary name server: leave (blank or 0.0.0.0) (... still having issues try 213.233.128.19)
Secondary name server: leave (blank or 0.0.0.0) (... still having issues try 213.233.128.1)
Proxy serv. Address: leave (blank or 0.0.0.0)
    Proxy port number: leave (blank)

For HSCSD 'high speed' dial-up, your account would need to be enabled for the Vodafone "High Speed Data" access point first, then try this:

    Connection Name: Voda HSCSD
    Data Bearer: High Speed GSM
    Dial-Up Number: +353876202222
    Username: vodafone
    Prompt Password: No
    Password: vodafone
    Authentication: Normal
    Data Call Type: ISDN v.110
    Max. data speed: 38400

    OPTIONS -> ADVANCED SETTINGS

    Phone IP Address: Automatic
Primary name server: leave (blank or 0.0.0.0) (still having issues try 213.233.128.19)
Secondary name server: leave (blank or 0.0.0.0) (still having issues try 213.233.128.1)
Proxy serv. Address: leave (blank or 0.0.0.0)
    Proxy port number: leave (blank)
    ...
    Use Callback: No
    PPP Compression: No
    Use Login Script: No
    Modem Init: leave blank

see how you get on with that...

I don't think will work. While the handset is certainly capable of diplaying the content, the handset is not an "official" Live handset, thus when you attempt to access Live, it will detect what handset you have and refuse you access. Thats why you have to set up for WAP, which does not seem possible either :(

only reason for giving them (both) was if he had already asked / or asks for Live! to be enabled and someone in Voda switches it on (migrates) then the wap.vodafone.ie AP may be disabled for their account - that's what happened to me when i was 'flipped' :) so just giving the options i can think of while supporting 'blind'...

i thought the handset sniffing was very strict too - until trying it with the MS Smartphone and Live! popped into view (and that sure ain't supported!)

DubWireless do you have any idea how you managed that?! I have a 6100 which is not supported by Live! and I can't get it to work. I know i have 5 APNs provisioned ;)(wap, isp, office, MMS and live) but all I get is the "you have tried to access Vodafone Live!" crappy message and then the redirection to the normal wap content.

    Thanks all

    Mr.Taz
I bought it from expansys. They price there has dropped about 6 times in two weeks as they get more stock in. I Paid around £340 for it: Nokia 6600 on expansys

There are some bugs in the software at the moment from what I can see. I have noticed it freeze when I hung up a call and also it has turned off once or twice. Also when sending text messagges the To: field is set to alpha numerica instead of text. All a bit like the early releases of the 7110. But the firmware on it is dates 16-10-03 and as far as I know they already have an updated version

One other gripe is the PC suit. It really is a load of pants. essentailly it only allows you backup and transfer images. Not even as good as the PC suite they have for the series 40 phones eg 6610, 7250 etc.

    Thanks a million Brian

Have been able to connect using the isp.vodafone settings with no dns set

This allows me access WAP site through the WAp browser and also web site through the oPera browser.

The Opera Browser is very impressive. The user interface is ver intuitive but it could end up costing you a fortune to use since the pages are around 50kb as opposed to the c. 2kb for the WAP pages. The page sizes could be exponentially more if you turn "Show Images" On

To reduce the cost, you could try one of their GPRS add on packages.. Will give you a free allowance and reduced rates.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 184 ✭✭cyberspider

Asked them about this they have a gprs 3 add on that is €12 a month for 3mb then it is .3 cent a kb after this. Standard charge is 2cent a kb for first 512 then .5 thereafter

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,822 ✭✭✭sunbeam

You can use your inclusive monthly minutes for HSCSD calls. They would probably work out cheaper than GPRS if you plan to do a lot of web browsing.

OT but can some one explain the vodafone live charging for me?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,441 ✭✭✭✭jesus_thats_gre

    Thats a classic question..

Simple really. You are charged a minimum connection of 10 cents or somethig..

You are then charged 15 cents per dynamic content page. So the normal menus that do not update are free.

hi, it is up to Voda what they let into the Live! "portal" - your handset / browser is identified (sniffed) and directed to the version of the portal most appropriate to the handsets capabilities / browser... Voda control what is directed where, for some reason they had left it open to the MS Smartphone... so nothing to do with me I'm afraid!

the contents didn't display very well on the handset (worng sizes / layouts etc.) - so either the sniffer had a mistake (and the MS Smartphone got through) or they opened it up for some reason to test something it out...

currently pretty sorry state of affairs on Vodfone alright with a whole "one" inclusive data option to choose for use with a handset! - make sure to know when you next billing cycle is as the inclusive data package will only kick in then, up until that your on pay-as-you use

it's pretty expensive, although it used to be only 1 MB inclusive for the same price until around March/April when they got "generous" ;) and added an extra 2MB to the package and decreased the per KB over charge - they also have this silly min connection 'fee' of 10k per connection so while it was more of a factor when there was only 1MB inclusive, it is still something to bear in mind if you perform tasks like polling for mail with out keeping an active connection

as sunbeam said, HSCSD can offer an alternative is some cases with the 087 - 087 data call as part of any inclusive minutes - but it depends what type of a/c you have, best suited for Active due to it's 300 inclusive minutes and then only during off-peak, however it can eat into the other a/c's minutes pretty quickly over a month especially if you are already eating them through regular talk time

bear in mind both services are more suitable for different tasks, due to their 'pay by data volume' v.s. 'pay by second' online billing - also bear in mind HSCSD will be harder on the battery

unfortunately their ISP can't be your Friend-for-'kinda'-Free, although i think someone posted a while back they were lucky enough to get it when the offer was first introduced!

happy mobile surfing - just bear in mind the cost :)

i kept getting stuck for answers with Cust Support when asking what point 'dynamic' content would mean a charge per page

i just stay away from Live! on a supported handset and source WAP content from the likes of entertainment.ie, enn.ie, ananova.com, bbc.co.uk, yahoo.com etc.

if you are somone who want's to keep track on their GPRS usage (and with Voda's prices if you use it more than a little then that's you ;)) it can really mess you up, as your data log is negated with all this per page pricing

wouldn't matter so much if you could track GPRS usage / costing online - but it's still not possible on Voda - they just tell you how long yor GPRS session was (like that's helpful to know ) - O2 have a much better implementation showing you your actual GPRS usage during the month

Have you got the phone connecting to to Vodafone Ireland's WAP services or Vodafone UK's WAP service?

I am from the UK connecting to the UK..

but I have finaly cracked it , MMS and GPRS working.

I work for www.UKPhoneShop.com and when I rang Vodafone to ask for the setting they replied with "Even if you were HARRY POTTER you wouldn't get the phone to work with MMS" Well what more can I say. I DID.

I have recently rang them and they are now testing the settings.

I have a nice warm feeling inside because I beat the Vodofone system. :p

You wouldn't post up the settings you are using out of curiousity? Also, are handsets purchased on a new connection in the UK network locked?

I was told by meteor today (via email) that their network is indeed compatable with the nokia 6600 and that it will be possible to send and recieve mms on their network and that they support ANY GPRS phone.

Yes that's true, Meteor do indeed support the nokia 6600. I called in to a Meteor store today and i got my mms and gprs up and running. :D I'm pretty dam happy.

hi , someone on the FS Mobiles made a post saying a Voda CSR said that the standard WAP/MMS settings should now work with the 6600

as they didn't before can someone on Vodafone (with a 6600 ;)) check to see if anything has changed now as it's been a while since anyone has posted that they tried...

    thanks,

I have a 6600 on O2 no joy with the GPRS or MMS yet but im told they have a test WAP2 gateway so hopefully i will be able to sort somthing.

Slightly off topic i have a Sony Ericson P900 here as well wouldn't recomend it to anyone... not impressed at all. The 6600 is much nicer then i thought it would be it looks bigger then it is in most pictures. Loads of featuers. Only issue so far is its very slow to do any thing...

    thanks for the O2 update,

i'd recommend a P900 to anyone who's requirements were a close match to the features it provided - it would be closer to the likes of an XDA (II) device - a Series 60 handset offers a different kind of 'experience' for someone over a UIQ based device discusses a bit in this thread

    BrianG

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 8,679 Mod ✭✭✭✭Rew

Have an XDAII as well but wound't compare it to a P900 ;)

The quality of the speaker phone fuction is terrible espically in comparison to the XDA II

I ran V-Rally on the P900 and that was pretty impresive but pointless as it was impossible to controll.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,027 ✭✭✭flywheel

well they both have their strengths and weaknesses - i find the P900's phone elements and Bluetooth better - the design is also easier for one handed use with it's size fitting the hand better and the Jog-Dial making it easy to get around, the battery also lasts longer for me then the XDA II

sure the XDA II can also have advantages being a true PDA centric device, SD/MMC memory expansion, option of an expansion pack for CF/Video Out/extended battery), SDIO WiFi capability

never had a big problem with the speaker phone feature on either device though - but I'd be more inclined to use a Bluetooth headset with them rather than in speaker phone mode

i know people who wouldn't give the Pocket PC Phone Ed. any time and prefer UIQ devices, and vice-versa, i find myself being a bit more objective as neither is perfect...
