I tend to always eat a banana before I go to the gym and it tends to do the trick.
Although a couple of times, I did have a bottle of lucozade sport before going and was really surprised to find out that I could actually go for 33+1/3 longer!!! ;)

But seriously, the lucozade does work.
And as far as eating goes make sure that you have something high in Carbs before you go, about an hour beforehand would be ideal! Although make sure that you don't eat too close to your session or invariably you'll get cramps!!

this may be straying slightly from the point but...glucose tablets: should i eat them or dissolve them in water?

I always ate them, but they would dehydrate you somewhat, so i suppose drinking something with them would be an idea/disolving them.

instead of that, and back to the previuos point as well, lucozade is expensive, the likes of powdered energy drinks, that you mix up urself are good, cheaper and actually more specialised. I've used High5 for years.

You can get Lucozade Sport in powder format in either Jervis or Liffey Valley Boots. It costs €7.61 and makes approx 10 'bottles' (might be 12, not sure). Smaller Boots do not stock it. It is also sold in JJB Sports, though you will pay €10-11 for the same item there.

Where can you buy High5, and how much does it cost?

I tried this stuff called H2, the other day.

I have to say about 15-30 minutes after ingesting the drink, I really noticed that I had increased energy levels, over what I'd expect for that time of my workout session.

I'm not sure isotonics are a 'good' idea though... I mean, I'm pretty sure that it's a better idea to try to burn fat, then to give yourself cheap slutty energy from an isotonic.

Isotonics are not meant to provide a "kick", they are not meant to be used as a pre-gym boost. Thats just abusing them. What they are intended for is replenishing water, electrolytes and energy after a hard session. The fact that they are isotonic simply means that they are absorbed quickly into the blood stream.

Fact of the matter is that if yuor diet is right yuo won't need a pre-gym boost. Eat little, eat often and stay properly hydrated.

High5 energy drink, and pwoerbars hydroplus are availble in the bike shop beside the square in "refill packs". Just means you get an extra 100g for 2 euros less than the normal price.

You want energy for a hardcore weights workout?

    2 x 600ml lucozade sport
300grams maltodextrin - pure complex carb - ignore the GI Index
    1.2litres water

This gives 3 litres - 1litre before workout, 1.5 during the 90min session rest on way home.

This single addition allowed me to increase my bench from a lowly 195kgs to 227.5kgs in a little over 14 weeks and that is natural too.

Irrespective of whether you are trying to lose weight or not you need fuel for weights as with weights you are trying to build muscle.
