Hopefully someone can help me out. Has anyone ever heard of an amp manufacturer called Harley Benton? They seem to be German from what I can find out. The reason I ask is because Thomann.de have an 80W amp for €166 and I need an amp.

Does anyone know anything about them or their amps?

They seem to be a German Ukelele manufacturer who have recently branched out into knock-off electric guitars, amps, etc. They seem to be a German version of Encore. Only one review of a H B amp on Harmony Central, they guy said it was fairly crap.

You get nothing for nothing, they're using crap cheap components to get you those 80 watts, so IMO you'd be better off buying a smaller wattage Peavey or Fender amp. Better sound, better built, maybe slightly quiter but you'd be better off in the long run.

Yeah, i think it needs to be said that loud doesnt equal good. Its nice to wake the neigbours sometimes but generally if you can hear it theres no point going beyond ure means. Anyway if ure gonna use the amp live their gonna mic it up anyway for the pa.

At home i use a 65 watt Fender Reverb(what model i aint sure) but its dam loud as it is and has a really sweet tone clean and on the overdrive channel. And i think it cost around 100 sterling. But that was a few years ago.

Yeah, I've got a 70W Fender Roc Pro, got it for £250 from a guy in Buy & Sell. Never needed to push it past 3 on either channel, it's exceptionally loud but it's got a sweet, sweet tone.

If you can manage to find one, I'd recommend the Vox Cambridge 30. They're not being made anymore, but they're a sweet little amp...

Of course, if anyone wants to donate an amp to me, I won't complain :D

Seriously though, cheers for all the info.

and probably ridculously expensive as the include the Vox "ure bank account is now empty" logo.

sod if if u have 400 quid just get a marshall valvestate avt100. What i use live and cant fault it live or for recording. Simple and it sounds good.

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 8,351 ✭✭✭fitz

Ugh valvestates! Not my taste at all...
The Cambridge cost £300 when it came out...very inexpensive amp, lovely sound. Records like a dream...

Give me a Road King any time.....

wel it aint my dream amp either but some times you have to go with what you can afford. Its reliable, sounds good and gets great sounds for me setup.

Every time i hear a vox i have to go listen to jam records. something unmistable about that sound. the valvestate on the other hand is a little generic.

hell i want a twin rectifier. Got a grand mate?

ahhh yeah but we live in the republic where its viciously over priced and taxed. Get ure ass to bairds in belfast. always much nicer.

or if u can be bothered for big purcahases for anything. go to a big chain, like sound control, in the uk. they will knock **** loads off the price.

eg my lp custom was more or less half price avec free case because they hadnt much cash in the till that week. Oh and me ex drummer worked there!

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 8,351 ✭✭✭fitz

I want a Mesa Triple Rectifier, forget the Dual Recto! :D
That and a Vox AC30, so I can split signal and have two effects loops going into the two amps.
    *drool*
Will be buying an ES335 shortly after Christmas, so I think the amps are gonna have to wait....

Ah, you can't beat an Ernie Ball John Petrucci 7 string with the peizos, magnetics going to a 2 4x12 Road King Stack and the piezos going to a roland JC120. Mmmm, the stuff Musician Inc is made of.

PersonalJesus's rule number 1: 7 strings should not be counted as guitars and are novelty items for bad bad bad musicans. Ala all nu metal.

    PesrsonalJesus - vast generalizations ahoy!

See you're a Steve Vai, Joe Satriani and John Petrucci fan then. Have a wee look for Steve Vai Lesson 2 and tell me he's a "nu-metal" player.

    w*nk guitar!w*nk guitar!w*nk guitar!

It's great, but it sucks...can be the most boring drivel...

I'm more of an effects driven player, prefer doing interesting stuff with sounds than the fast technical stuff...

Have a listen to Satriani. Emotion, not technical ****. If you want technical ****, Yngwie Malmsteen or Rusty Cooley, yer only men!

theyall have great techincal ability but its ****e and has no soul. i like loads o different types of music. be effect driven or just plain grunginess or dance. but just playing scales as fast as you can doesnt impress me. its just jazz with a distortion pedal.

Sorry but that's pure bull****. Actually listen to Satriani. LISTEN. That's the key word. He doesn't play a thousand notes a second. Just because he can doesn't mean he does. Go get Tears In The Rain or Day at the Beach and tell me that's "playing scales as fast as you can". Go on, I dare ya!

Which album do you have. His older albums are probably better. Live In San Francisco is bloody amazing though.

And a rhythym and blues orchestra is just a classical orchestra on acid. But this is off topic.

Anyone else know of any decent cheap amps?

Surfing is good. Not his best though. Try Live In San Francisco or the second disc from The Time Machine.

    disappearing up ure own rectum?

Discuss, giving more than one point of view give reasons for ure answer.

You've been reading you're english exam papers too much!! The second point - disappearing up *your* own rectum - are refering to Vai and Satch? Ever hear of the G3 tour?

save up and get something decent.

if ure serious about playing guitar there aint no point buying a cheap amp. atleast go midrange. you get what you pay for.

    well it shouldnt.

    only messing.

nysnc and vai interesting mix of tastes you have there. *stiffles laughter*

    horses for courses.

i just think there is more to guitar playing than what they do. i think they just dont have any emotion in theor playing

Answer me this honestly - have you ever actually listened to many of Vai's or Satch's songs? Try For The Love of God by Steve Vai (very technical but FULL of emotion) or The Crush Of Love By Joe Satriani.

    Never said I liked lip-sync.......

Thanks for the link but 15W would have a hard time being heard over a drum kit, 100W fender guitar amp and a 65W Ashdown bass amp......

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 196 ✭✭PersonalJesus

heard a few songs, but that was enough for me to know i didnt like their work.

when it went all bibbibly bibibibibiibibeee, i lost all interest.

have mates that are huge fans, and tried to get me into it. but i dunno its just................ not my thing.

Fair enough. As you said, horses for courses. Just do me a favour and don't call them soulless scale players cos it ain't so.

    souless scale players.

I'll concede on the Pathfinder, but that 15w fender is ****ing loud.
It's go 4 tubes in it, far as I remember, and packs quite a punch.
One of the loudest amps I've ever played through was 30w...AC30, beaten only by a Mesa Dual Recto, which I could feel on my back, and I was standing 4 foot in front of the cab....

    *drool*

Go in to Musicians Inc and check out the wee fender one...

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Mmm, but for the same price I could get a 80W Valvestate 2x12 combo.

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 8,351 ✭✭✭fitz

Key word in that sentence: Valvestate.

Nice easily transported Valve amp vs. piece of **** solid state...

    I know what I'd buy...

My Vox (only one valve) was always heard over the kit...trust me the fender is loud...

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

The valvestate isn't completely solid state. Had the same argument with my mate. I'm not a huge fan of the Fender sound tbh. Blasphameous, I know but it's too twangy for me. I just need something cheap and LOUD. If needs be, I'll get/make an external tube preamp.

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 8,351 ✭✭✭fitz

Neither am I, and I love the sound of this thing...

And only certain Valvestates had valves in 'em, and it was at pre-amp stage.

They're not being made anymore either...
Presumably cause Marshall realise they were crap...:p

Just try everything out, look at all your options...you might find exactly what you're looking for in the last place you'd expect...

And a decent valve pre-amp will cost you at least 300 yoyos anyway...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 196 ✭✭PersonalJesus

buy a cab and the auxilary from ure current amp. if loud is all ure after itll do the job and will be easier to then later when money affords it to upgrade with a nice head.

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Nice idea but I've no auxiliary from my current amp. It's only a 10W Ibanez practice amp.
