What was your "bestest" cartoon from your childhood?

For me it has to be Dangermouse. I loved the crazy rant the voice over guy would do at the start of each episode as the animation moved over the city of london. Great song at the end too:

    He's The Best
    He's The Greatest
He's The Greatest Secret Agent In The World!
    He's The Ace - He's Amazing...
He's the Strongest... He's The Quickest.... He's The Best!

Dangermouse! (da da da da daaa) etc

An honorable mention has to go to
Mysterious Cities of Gold and Ulysses 31 (thanks for that lodgepole I didn't remember the names right, too much beer and drugs have corrupted my memory functions) and Transformers (robots in disguise!! sorry couldn't help myself).

    Oh the memories....

Mysterious Cities of Gold and Ulysses 31.

I'm dying for a Cities of Gold DVD set... There's one in French, but it has no subtitles.

    Transformers - Robots in Disguise
    Autobots wage their Battle
    To destroy the evil forces
    Of the Decepticons

    More than meets the eye.

I mean seriously, a cars, jets, dinosaurs, construction vehicles that turn into a robot which fight. What more can a growing lad need in a cartoon?

I used to love Dangermouse and Duckula as a kid.

A friend recently got a Duckula DVD for us all to watch. Now that I'm a little older I realise that not one single episode made any sense whatsoever. Fantastic! :)

In all fairness, who could find fault with Norse viking penguins?:D

    Yay! A nostaliga thread!

OK I'm also plumping for "Mysterious Cities of Gold". I have Episode 1-22, but still need 23-39!

Also good was "Ulysses 31". I've only 1.5 episodes of that but I have the full opening credits and theme tune :D

No mention yet for "Dogtanian and the Three Muskahounds" so I'll do it. And a bloody kick ass theme tune (which I also have - one for one and all for one muskahounds are always ready one for one and all for one...)

Now one I watched, but noone else seemed to have, was Robotech - composed of three series spanning 3 eras: Macross Crossing, The Masters, and the Invid. Sort of an introduction to anime (it spliced together a few Japanese series). Some great music and total "Wow - COOL!" feeling when giant robots battled and the earth got wasted.

Honorable mentions to: He-Man and Transformers. Also worthy: Thundercats, M.A.S.K (Mobile Armored Strike Kommand - I can still remember!), and Count Duckula (why no mention of him?!). In fact I could go on for ages. And I think I've the theme tune now for every single one of them - WUHOO!

    Jayce And The Wheeled Warriors
    Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
    M.A.S.K.
    The Mysterious Cities Of Gold

    Bucky O'Hare
Dick Tracy - those short five minute cartoon thingys
    Widget
    Dino The Last Dinosaur
    The original Ghost Busters cartoon

and last but definately not least...

C.O.P.S. - I can't believe no one has mentioned this cartoon yet! It boasts one of the best theme tunes ever!!!

Anywho, I remember a really old cartoon about this family in a spaceship which featured a man with a long black outfit with it going over his head and a little girl. I thought it was very weird and it spooked me out...anyone got any idea what this cartoon was called and what it was about?

    I miss them all :(

Of course they made it home! Episode 26 - "The Kingdom of Hades". The script can be found here So there never was to be a sequel. I actually remember this episode :D

Cities of Gold also ended - Episode 39: "The End of the City of Gold". Here's what happened:

Gomez and Gaspard reach the now-exposed city and start gathering gold. At the Burning Shield, Kalmec installs the power unit beneath the crystal spire, under Menator's instructions. It functions, but then overheats and sinks into the ground. Back at the City, Tao's jar glows once again. The High Priest realises that the Olmecs have activated the device. He explains that the jar is actually a vital part of the power unit, without which the power unit will overload and sink into the earth's core, causing a catastrophe of global proportions. The High Priest sets out for the Burning Shield in the hope of shutting down the power unit. As the malfunctioning power unit begins its descent into the earth, the City is shaken by seismic tremors, and the Olmec base at the Burning Shield is utterly destroyed. Mendoza, back at the City of Gold, asks the High Priest's servants why they have not accompanied their master. They explain that the real High Priest died three years earlier. At the Burning Shield, the so-called High Priest prepares to follow the path of the descending power unit. Esteban asks him once more about the travelling prophet, but the High Priest cannot tell him where the prophet went. Mendoza, meanwhile, has just discovered that the so-called High Priest is the travelling prophet, Esteban's father, but decides that it would be easier for Esteban if he isn't told. Further tremors shake the earth. Gomez and Gaspard disappear into the lake as the City of Gold is swallowed by the earth. The High Priest finds the reactor deep underground. He installs the jar, shutting the power unit down, averting the catastrophe but apparently dying in the attempt. Mendoza shows Sancho & Pedro the gold he grabbed from the City earlier. The children return to the condor, determined to cross the Pacific in search of the other six Cities of Gold. They agree to meet Mendoza, Sancho & Pedro someday at the little tavern in Barcelona where they first met. Then the condor takes off, and the three children fly into the sunset.

    1. Battleship Yamato (Starblazers) - I don't think this ever came to Ireland or the UK. It was truly amazing. Main characters dying and everything. It was japanese originally and got a cut for the US market.

    2. Voltron. - This kicked ass. Robot cats coming together to form big robot dude. Fantastic.

    3. He-Man. The first cartoon I remember, we still have a video of it at home somewhere.

I can't believe nobody mentioned Knightmare. [aint a cartoon but hey you can't limit it to Cartoons. When it came back on Challenge months ago I was delighted. An amazing show when you were a kid, especially when they spied on lord fear witha magnifying glass and his eyes would go red as he was about to kill them. Riveting!!!!

Dreamstone was my favourite Cartoon [need I say more?]
And Teddy Ruxpin was one of my other favourites when I was younger.

Way further back I can remember Batfink ["My wings are like a shield of steel"]

Here's a list of stuff I remember [can't say I liked it all but I remember it anyway] , see if it jump starts up your memory

The Raccoons [Cyril sneer and some pigs and raccoons - a touch of genius]
Woof! [A boy who turned into a dog - Class!]
    Penny Crayon [sh*t]
    Charlie Chalk [????]
    Bananaman [great]
    The *Real* Ghostbusters [oh yeah]
    The Gummi bears [classic]
    Fraggle Rock [awesome]
The original He-man cartoon. [that was the business. not like that new fangled poo]
    Ducktales [great fun]
Talespin [you remember Baloo from the Jungle book flying a seaplane and a kid (fox/rabbit/Dunno) surfing clouds out the back of it]
Darkwing Duck [slightly more recent, not as good as Ducktales or Talespin]
Trap Door. [can't remember anything about it other than a blue blob of plasticine looking after his master or sumfink]
    Stoppit and tidyup [can't remember]
Mr Ben [a bit before my time but I saw some of it]
King Rollo [can't really remember much]
Count Duckula [fantastic, weird, sometimes a bit scary even, vague memories]
Dogtanion and the Four muskahounds [great]
Finders keepers [couldn't remember that name for weeks]
    Samurai pizza cats [Oh yeah]

    Wowzer
    Inspector Gadget
    Round the Bend [unparalleled]
    Round the Twist
    THE TOMORROW PEOPLE

Dennis [the one on C4 with Mr Wilson]
Oxtales [only on at summer time]

    The Bobobods
The Snorkels or snorks or sumfink
    The Poddington Peas
    The Riddlers [muftys]
    The Dinosaurs [Saturday afternoon Animatronics]
    The Rattys
    Bertha
    Button moon

HOLY PRIESTS!!! I WATCHED A LOT OF TELLY AS A KID

And the Sullivans or something was always on before CITV

Hope all of that gave somebody food for thought.
As you can see after hours at Witnness one night we all started rhyming

this stuff off and I haven't stopped since. I can go on btw.

Check out Saturday morning telly on

    Ulysses 31 - Absolute class!!!!

Mysterious Cities of Gold - I would sell my first born to get a copy on VCD or DVD!

    Dungeons and Dragons - <sighs>

Trapdoor - Don't you open that trapdoor! cos there's something down there!

Batfink - now there was a bat you could trust!

There's a certain amount of copy & paste because I couldn't remember that many cartoons off the top of my head - but the ones listed were all watched by me. There were another 50 or so I left out which I knew of but didn't watch, like Jem etc. That I left to my sister to watch.

The guy in the link listed above has it on VCD. Put your firstborn in a box and post it to him - it'll prolly cover the costs of the discs and postage.

Yep, that's the one alright...I know there's a C.O.P.S. appreciation site on the net, I've been on it and it has the theme tune available for download. There's one for Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors and The Turtles too

I just wish someone would do that for Sharky and George :(
