I collect old Irish/UK and ancient coins such as Roman or anything hammered or interesting. With the Euro in, Ireland is unlikely to have any more interesting coins in the future. If anyone else has a similar interest I'd like to hear from you. I've not seen any other discussions on coins so theres probably no one interested in them on boards. Just thought I'd try out the new board!

I also collect other Antiques and I think this could become an interesting new board.

All I have coin related is all the euro coins in one of those display books. I think a friend of mine has some Roman coins though, I'll ask her when I see her next.

Do you have any of the rarer Euro coins from the 3 independant states, Vatican, San Marino or Monaco? These first years of them are very valuable and a good investement.

If you ever want to do anything with them, let me know. Be careful with dealers, they won't tell you if theres anything rare in there. Most of the old Irish pre decimal coins are not worth a whole lot, but there are certain ones that are worth a few bob.

I have an old silver 2pence piece that I found in a drawer one day. I have no idea why its silver, nor do I know anything else about it. Ideas?

No, it just has the larger countries in it. I'd be interested in getting those other ones though, how much do they go for?

I take it your talking about an Irish 2p? Anyway if so the story is that sometimes the mint make mistakes and strikes coins on the wrong metal. That could have been the metal for a 10p or something. These are interesting finds and are quite collectable. Is the whole 2p intact, like is the size of the coin correct? If you could show me a scan it would be great.

They're all very expensive, in order the most expensive are the Vatican followed by San Marino then lastly Monaco.

Generally with Euro coins the lower value coins are worth the most. You'd pay over 100 Pounds stg for just a 1c Vatican coin for example.

The most affordable ones would be a 5 coin set of Monaco 2002, You'd pay around 30/35 Pounds in the UK for these. These are basically just 5 uncirculated coins taken from bank rolls and put into an unofficial specially made folder. This doesn't include the 1/2/5c coins as they didn't mint any in 2002 for circulation. Only way to get them is from the official limited ed coin sets. These official sets are big money though, upward of 200 Pounds.

You'd get an official limited edition San Marino 4 coin set of 2002 for about 70/80 pounds stg. This represented the high value 4 coins that s.marino released for circulation in 2002. Though they also made an extended set with the full 8 coins. Again your looking over 200 pounds for those.

Vatican, your looking at about 800 pounds for a full 8 coin set. All vatican coins are from official sets as they never released any at all for circulation. Though a 2003 set is around 500 pounds stg.

Not really interested in coins but I found a one penny coin from UK dated 1918. Is it worth anything? I'll post a picture if you want.

  • Moderators, Business & Finance Moderators, Music Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 4,499 Mod ✭✭✭✭Blade

If it's worn at all then I'm afraid it's not worth much at all. Probably about 15c! If it's totally uncirculated it might be worth up to a Euro. The scarce UK pennies of the 1900's are the 50,51 and 53. Apart from the 1933 of which there is only 1 known example.

Bah, it's very worn! And I was looking forward to doing an arty picture of the coin by a mirror so that you could see both sides at once!

    Thanks anyway.

Ah I know the coin very well, I've a couple of thousand of them here!

To be honest, no. Dealers are never going to give you the correct valuation on coins if they think they're going to be buying from you. I can get you a realistic valuation on a few coins but to do a whole collection would take too much time.

Do Easons still stock the UK and Irish coin guides. These used to be good for running through your collections of old coins, to tell you which years were worth something.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,188 ✭✭✭growler

1933 is a rare one you say ?

must have a look , I have a nice mounted collection of 100 old pennies from 1801 t0 1901, but the collection went on til mid forties with a few years missing , I'll have to see which those were.

  • Moderators, Business & Finance Moderators, Music Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 4,499 Mod ✭✭✭✭Blade

Oh very nice, those earlier 1800 ones can be valuable if they're in good nick. I doubt you'll have a 1933 uk penny, as I said theres only 1 known AFAIK. I can probably help you fill the gaps of the years your missing. I have them all up to when they stopped in 1967. The more expensive ones of the 1900's are those from the 50's as I was saying but the others are cheap enough.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,188 ✭✭✭growler

yeah the earlier ones can be in less than perfect nick allright, but in all of them you can make out the year at least. I'll have another look through them and see which could do with replacement.

  • Moderators, Business & Finance Moderators, Music Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 4,499 Mod ✭✭✭✭Blade

Well I've only got extra ones from about 1900 to 1967.

I had these dates typed out from an advert, may as well paste em to you, but these are more or less what I have spare:

    1900 1901 1902 1903 1905 1906 1907 1908 1909
    1910 1911 1912 1913 1914 1915 1916 1917 1918 1919
    1920 1921 1922 1926 1927 1928 1929
    1930 1931 1932 1934 1935 1936 1937 1938 1939
    1940 1944 1945 1946 1947 1948 1949
    1961 1962 1963 1964 1965 1966 1967

Theres also 3 scarcer ones from the 50's which I doubt you'd have but I'd have to get them for you if you wanted them.

What are notes worth, if anything? And if anything will good condition Euro notes be worth keeping?

  • Moderators, Business & Finance Moderators, Music Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 4,499 Mod ✭✭✭✭Blade

Old irish notes are worth keeping as thats the end of them now!

Euro notes I don't think are worth keeping. Though they will increase in price once they're like 30 years old, you'd be better off investing your money in a bank.

I have a silver 2p coin from 1971.It is identical to a normal 2p ,only it is silver.Could you tell me if it is worth anything, thanks.

  • Moderators, Business & Finance Moderators, Music Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 4,499 Mod ✭✭✭✭Blade

Assuming it's in a respectable condition and it wasn't actually painted silver then it's worth about 20 to 30 Euro. Basically it would have been struck on the wrong planchet, which are the blank disks they use. It's most probably struck on a metal called Cupro-Nickel, like the old pound coins and 10p's.

I'd give you 20 euro for it if you want, I collect these types of coins.

Pinkie i'd give you 25 for it

  • Moderators, Business & Finance Moderators, Music Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 4,499 Mod ✭✭✭✭Blade

Pinkie: I'd give you more for it than what's offered but I'd really need to see it or a scan of it, I'd also need to know if anyone has tried to clean it or polish it. I'm going away Saturday and won't be back till Tuesday so I won't be able to post during that time.

FranknFurter: Yes, I saw that post and I replied to the poster privately because the post was very old when I saw it, so I figured it was better to PM them about it in case they never checked the thread. Basically that Kilkenny penny is a token rather than official coinage. Merchants back then made their own tokens because there was a shortage of small change in circulation. The merchant in this case being Thomas Adams. Tokens prior to 1700 are generally quite scarce and hard to come by in good condition.

This one is pictured on page 125 of Seaby's ' Coins and tokens of Ireland ' from 1970. I've even got a spare copy of this book if you want it, it cost me 17 euro. It's small and of course prices are out of date but a great reference book for starting off if you're interested in Irish coins.

Try ebay and compare that half Dollar with one of same date and condition. Condition is everything.

This is probably the Caroletta medal (not coin) you have? But note it didn't sell at it's start price of £50.

Ditto.. though not so small. Pretty eclectic as well (but orderly in my mind :)).

A place to discuss such things would be great. Are there any groups here that people can join? The English have a few such groups around the UK.

Numismatic Society of Ireland, you can sign up at any of the 3 Annual coin fairs in the RDS. Or just pop along to any of the meetings and sign up there.

Do they have a website with more info? If there is a meeting up here in Belfast, or close, I will certainly take the time to go.
