Hey man, until recently I had my tongue pierced. Loved every second of having it. Its not too long before you can eat normal ood again, allthough I hd to wait 4 days due to the massive amount of swelling I had, but most people I know with one didnt have anythin close to the amount I had so you should be grand. The only bad thing I found was (and also the reason I removed it) that I broke a tooth (not as a result of the tongue piercing) and I got a filling in it, but the filling was on the inside of my mouth and the metal ball on the tongue bar caused a shock every time it touched it. I coulda got a plastic ball for it if I could have stuck it out for a day, which I decided I couldnt and lost it :(

just was annoying that i wasnt able to eat properly for 4 days afterwards.. OH by the way herbie the the women love the piercing... ;)

4 days? You got lucky! I was living on water, milkshakes, and bits of bread rolled into a small ball and pushed gently to the back of my teeth for just over a week! I think I angried it trying to eat burnt pizza the day I got it done  LOL!

a week god that must have been agonny..
the only thing that bugging me now is that the bloody bar is so long.. mainly cos i had to get mine put in 6mm further forward than normal.. so it really close to the front of the tongue..
other than that i totally happy with it now...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,483 ✭✭✭Töpher

get it changed after about 2 weeks for as small a length as your tongue can handle, thats what i did anyways and it felt like it wasnt there after. great stuffs.

Does it wear away your teeth, I heard it does and considoring my braces costing money my perants have some sort of unpleasnt reaction to the idea. Wouldnt a plastic ball stop that though?

I want a job scaring people for a living
Do you own a toothbrush you know how to use? You'll probably be fine then.

If a good piercer does your tongue it'll be positioned in a way that the barbell won't bang off your teeth constantly. If you want to be super careful then yeah you can use teflon balls on the bar.

I have mine done now for years....have taken it out few times but feel naked without it!!

As far as your teeth go get a barbell with plastic balls they don't do as much damage.

    Enjoy it!!!!

i've had mine about 2 years, no problems, and still got the titanium/steel/whatever-the-fvck-they-are balls on mine.

€60!! Celestial ring charge €45, and all the reputable piercing places include a change of bar in the price.

i new that €60 was a bit dear but i just dont have the time to head to dub..

Hey all..it's me again, sorry to sound so negative but the worst thing i ever did was get my tongue pierced..the man went through a blood vessel and it was constantly bleeding, in the end my friend had to ring a nurse up and i had to take it out and put pressure on it to stop the bleeding, its a bit ok now but just think twice before you get it done..it maybe down to whoever is doing it and im sure going to push things further as i lost a quite a bit of blood..:(

    hope every1 is ok :)

A good piercer will check your tongue thoroughly for veins and will tell you if it's impossible to do without hitting one. If you go to Celestial Ring or Snakebite or a reputable place you'll be fine.

Don't get it done. Not yet anyway. Nobody should be piercing 14 year olds.

Also, this is a full stop -> .

    Use it!

It is also commonly known as a period. :D

any decent piercer wouldn't pierce you at 14, parents permission or not...well not tongue anyway, seen far too many 12yr old girls with belly's done but anyway...
I'm all for fella's with tongue piercings but don't do it till yer 18, and go somewhere decent.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 255 ✭✭Kidd-o

blake.f have you found somewhere that'll pierce your tongue at 14? my mate is 17 and was told wait till he was 18 cause it was sexual harassment, dunno if thats a fairy story or what but...

Also, he was told that then they pierced his tongue web? odd...

sadly my tongue bar is destroying my teeth, entirely my fault if im not nawing on that im nawing on my lip bar!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,196 ✭✭✭Crumble Froo

haha, im pretty sure it's not sexual harrassment , but as far as i know, it can be construed as assault on a minor, or something to that effect.

blake.f, definitely definitley wait until you're old enough for a decent piercer to do it for you. there's so many horror stories out there from the irreputable people and places, it's not worth the damage you could do for the sake of a couple of years.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,846 ✭✭✭Le Rack

and a side note about tongue piercing infections? ye don't know you have one till you wake up in hospital with blood poisoning...

well my parents have enough money to get a proper tounge piercing done and i no what a ful stop is derbrain

wow.....all the help and advice he's being offered and he acts like a tit....erm...sorry...I mean a 14 year old! Yeah your definitely too young to have it done little man, and if your parents are willing to pay for it then shame on them! No personal dig at your parents so dont start givin me jip about it!:D But I don't think they should support a piercing like that at your age! Your ear lobe or top of your ears cartilage is more than enough. But I assume your not getting it done because your school wont allow it or something, but they wont notice your tongue right?

the most reputable places, eg snakebite will refuse to pierce underage people even with their parents present. so you still wont be able to get it done properly.

    Polite, i like it!!! :)

i dont think money was ever the issue, piercings arent expencive, i think it was more your age love...

think about it, and IMHO anywhere that will pierce your tongue at 14 are a bit scooby dubious...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 19,183 ✭✭✭✭Will

i feel so old saying this... when i was 17 i wanted my nipples pierced, went into body shock they told me i'd to be 18 because basically its interfering with a minor (same with you blake.f and you wanting your tongue piercing). I didnt like it but took the mature route and waited another few months, then on my 18th birthday got em done.
Get it done on the day of your 17th birthday or something, dont go to some crap place thatl screw your tongue up, wait for a while. can do ya no harm, then get pierced until your parents run out of dosh :D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,846 ✭✭✭Le Rack

I wanted my tongue done since I was ten, got it done a few months before my 19th, in the first week I'd moved out for college, seriously dude, wait, no where decent or reputable will even entertain the thought of piercing you with or without consent at that age

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 227 ✭✭Fly High

I got my tongue pierced when I was 15, so I guess I know where this kid is coming from though I would have considered myself much more mature at the age.
My parents also paid for it and signed the consent as my Christmas present, I think they knew it was something I was serious about I had 9 ear piercings at that stage was was getting bored, I don't feel it was irresponsible of them at all, they just knew their daughter.
I don't think you should get it done, if not for your age then you're maturity. Piercing your tongue is a big decision for someone so young and if you don't have full conviction it's probably best to give it a few years... Hope this convinces you...

Roisin, I dont mean to sound sarky, but youre getting a needle, through your tongue. How do you think its going to feel? Have you ever bit your tongue? Burned your tongue?
    Yes, it will hurt.

2 - You are 16. There is no reputable piercer that would pierce your tongue before your 18, unless you have your parents permission. I got mine done at 16, and the piercer didnt really think it was a good idea, despite me having my mother sign the form.

3 - My tongue never reduced with the swelling, although it doesnt bother me now. I never needed the smaller bars that youre supposed to get.
I also find that if i eat spicey food (even 5 years later) that my tongue hurts and swells even more.

Thats about the extent of the "bad experiences" ive had.
Except the day I got it done, I passed out in tesco that evening with the pain, and I couldnt talk properly for nearly 3 weeks.

i have my tongue pierced about 7years now, since it healed i've had no problems with it....
i say since it healed because that took about 6 weeks!
i couldn't eat solid food for over a week and then, while coughing i caught the bottom in front of my teeth and ripped it! this took a further four weeks to heal!

it's all good now, my dentist told me i had receding gums from it and to shorten the bar, i have a really short bar in it now and it's all good!!

i brought around mouthwash around in a bootle for 3 weeks and used it after every meal, effort-ish but i was always minty freash and had zero problems with my new hole

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,123 ✭✭✭✭Star Lord

If you're gonna use mouthwash (and it's recommended that you do!) then make sure that the mouthwash is alcohol free, as those with alcohol in them can cause problems, particularly as it thins the blood and makes the healing process much more drawn out and problematic.

Yeah but do you really want to get it done in somewhere that does poor practice like that? Are you gonna risk letting someone stick a needle through somewhere with a high blood flow like your tongue by someone that doesn't give a toss about general health and safety and just wants your money?

There are no licenses for body piercing. it's an un-regulated industry.

I'm not having a go at all, I just stated a fact. There are self imposed standards but they do not have to be adhered to. The professional places work based on ethics and safety.

If you live in Ireland like the rest of us, then it's unregulated. If you live in the UK then it's regulated, and anyone that pierces your tongue at 15/16 is breaking the law and can be put on the sex offenders register for doing so. So if someone is willing to do that, then consider how little they actually care about the people they are piercing.

No there is not. There is licencing in virtually every country but here.

make sure you ask for it to be numbed. i assumed they did this anyway. the guy asked me to stick out my tongue. caught it with the pliers yolk. shoved the needle through it. tears rolling down my face. couldn't eat solids for about a week. eating was sore for about three weeks after that.

are you sure about that? i'm struggling to understand that one
