Yoga? has anyone here done it, or are doing it? if so can you tell me abit about it, like is it just for women, what age group go this, the class's, dose it burn of fat, and what +'s and -'s there are about it
i know i'm sort of asking for the moon and the star's, but links like this don't tell you what it's like really doing it, i'm not in great shape myself, and i'm looking for something to do as well as running to get back into shape
any info you can tell me would be welcome
    thanks

I'm starting a beginners class on Tuesday so I can't tell you what it's like until then. But I've heard great reports from people about how good it is for relaxation, stress. I don't think it'll help you loose weight but Im looking forward to it loosening me up and putting me in a better frame of mind.

It seems to be predominatley females who do it, but there are some lads that I work with who swear by it. I like the idea of being with a guy who does yoga!!

There are a few different types of yoga.
Here's a link that I found, you might find it useful.

I started a beginners yoga course two weeks ago. Well I was there just one time so far but it was great. It was very relaxing I have to say, I had the best sleep since months afterwords. What they taught us in this first lesson was a way to breathe properly so your full lungs get used and they showed us some of this yoga positions. I also dont think that you necessarily loose weight from that but its supposed to open your eyes a bit of what you eat and what your body needs etc. The course was 2 hours and this time you only concentrate on yourself, its just great to lock out anything else thats going on in your head for a while.

Oh yeah and the age group was completely different, there were also men and the age range was between 20 and 60 I'd say, and you dont need to be sporty in order to go there. You stretch your muscles and when you reach your limit you can just stop.

I don't know how its done here, but Yoga is actually meant to be a way of training your mind, rather than training your body (meditaion etc). Once your mind is a lot more powerful than you can even imagine, and once you learn to use it, it would help you in all walks of life, including 'getting in shape'.

'have never been to a Yoga session myself, but I have read a little about its origins and mythologies.

well I've never seen any videos, last weeks class was my first exposure to yoga and it was great!

It was a 2 hr session. He started off telling us what he was going to do in the class, asking us all what we hoped to gain from it and told us if we didn't feel comfortable doing any of the positions to just do a stretch.
We did some relaxation excresizes for a while, then some basic stretching positions, no one could strech as far as he could but I suppose that's the whole point of doing the class, to become more supple and elongated. I hope to be able to touch my toes without bending my knees soon, god I am so unfit.
we finished off the class with some more relaxation techniques, I was nearly asleep , it was brilliant. I'm so glad I signed up for it, can't wait to go back tomorrow.

I started yoga 2 years ago. I had no sense of physical body. I was sore after workouts and couldn't touch my toes. After six months I was able to bend foward and place my whole palm flush on the floor. I have been away from yoga for a year and just started back at it once a week and it is great.

In other words it takes time, and there is hope for everyone. I was the most overweight and inflexible person.

    Good luck!

Neither could I in the beginning! But even during the first session I could feel a difference - by the end of the session I was bending way more than before, without straining myself.

You might not think that disabled people can do yoga, but you'd be wrong! I LOVE IT!!! I do 20 minutes every night-or at least I did before Christmas (must restart soon!) It's absolutely BRILLIANT!!!!! I like to put my music on-always classical (obsessed with classical!!!) and do my stretches. For those who do yoga on a regular basis, what would be your favourite "asanas" (yoga term for exercises)? I absolutely ADORE doing backbends-find them TOTALLY exhilarating!!! What would be other peoples favourites?
