Why, oh why?, has RTE one got a DOG on the left hand corner of the screen today?.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 2,884 Mod ✭✭✭✭celticfc

Get rid of them and quick RTE,

They're terrible looking old big things that draw your eye away from the picture.

I believe they were origionally used for in the analogue days with no EPGs. That was understandable but not know when we all have EPG's & with the name of the channel appearing on most telly's.

We want rid of dogs, not to get more. I don't know what RTE are thinking of.

Bloddy awful. I could'nt believe my eyes when I saw it on Cagney and Lacey.

Even more unbeleivable is the cover of this weeks RTÉ Guide. :ninja:

what i meant was N2 has a new one too to tell us that we are watching it. RTÉ N2 and the DEN one are onscreen together in different corners

Yeah RTE have never been very good with DOG's

    ID's is too big
The Den is to colourful and big
    Classifications too thick
RTE News they should have let it alone.
    EuroNews

I like the TG4 dog but it is so small at the moment.

Is it RTE One or just RTE?
    Is a circle around N2?

I'll see when i get home.

OK, I'm not an RTÉ licence payer but why is a state broadcaster which has gone 40 years plus without an On screen logo needed one now? In the UK when the BBC started on satellite they had DOGs on BBC 1 & 2, and were forced to take them off due to a huge amount of complaints from viewers. My guess is that it will only be a matter of time before RTÉwill be forced to do the same.

In fairness to TV3 and TnaG when it launched, they needed DOGS just so you knew what channel you are on; we're new, notice us.

But in the days of search and scan banners on digital TV, they are not needed.

    EuroNews
    Dail Beo (Prehaps)
    And Home Shopping

But nothing else, I would remember that, TV3 were the first Irish channel to use a dog.

Hmm, I missed all this controversy!

Incidently RTE ONE still use their old (serif) logo as their DOG during Euronews. If they're going to continue with that, maybe they should use the new Gill Sans (or is it Futura?) logo?

I've noticed them today. I can't believe that they've two DOG's on N2. You'd think "The Den" was enough!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 363 ✭✭FIRE

So why do they have 2 dogs on network 2 then, is it not suppose to be branded as Network 2. If it is the case then they should just have a N2 logo and leave the RTE logo to RTE1.

BTW what about gerry scully ;) Goodnight.

I'm sure all the girls are after him!!!!

    :D

RTÉ don't want anyone to forget that Network 2 is theirs as well. how long before the next programme banner (like the one on ITV1) appears or they may even go the MTV route and put the programme name on the screen

They shouldn't bother with the ONE just have RTÉ on its own on RTÉ 1 and the shouldn't have RTÉ on n2. Also while I like the N2 logo its not good for DOG use.

BOTH DOGS ARE TOO BOLD AND BIG AND SHOULD BE MOVED TO THE LEFT A BIT MORE.
RTÉ don't want anyone to forget that Network 2 is theirs as well.

After N2 rebranded they got rid of RTÉ from the N2 remember the put it back on for TWO.

Well yes just get rid of the DOG's.

TV3 do the next on like ITV1.

TV3 = ITV IRELAND?????? COULD LET IT GO.

I notice yesterday that RTE1 and Net 2 have started using DOG all the time. God why have they done this? Is it because they are on satellite though they've been there quiet awhile now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,726 ✭✭✭✭DMC

Being discussed on the Broadcasting board, moved there and merged.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 820 ✭✭✭SRB

I assume then the odd white square 3/4 along the top right hand side of the picture on RTE 1 and N2 this past while has been someone in RTE playing around to see if anyone would notice or complain. Or else they just didn't know how to put the logos in !

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 2,884 Mod ✭✭✭✭celticfc

I've just noticed it this evening, but they seem to have changed their classification DOG. Instead of having that big ugly black thing on the top right of the screen it is now a small transparent icon that appears under the RTE DOG's.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 2,884 Mod ✭✭✭✭celticfc

They've also got rid of that horrible ID logo DOG. :)
For some reason though there was no DOG on screen when Home & Away.

RTE don't need to use DOGS at all and the usual excuse of needing onscreen idents in a 200 channel universe doesn't hold any water for the simple reason that RTE and TV3 got the prime EPG slots on Sky: channels 101, 102 103 and 104. Everyone knows and their mother knows what channels these are.

Mind you the on-screen graphics are probably the most interesting thing on Irish telly these days - look at the level of discussion that little white box on RTE1 generated, Pat Kenny could only dream of being half as controversial!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 363 ✭✭FIRE

But will they take it down or are they there for good??

BTW i think TV3 should move there logo and make it bigger........

They should place it in the middle of the screen
Only when Dunphy is on :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,641 ✭✭✭✭Elmo

the TG4 dog is very small, and very transparent.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,965 ✭✭✭JDxtra

The dogs don't even work well on a white (or bright) background. You'll notice that they appear very raw and jaggedy (?) at the edges when overlayed on a bright image. Compare it to the nice transparent DOG on TG4.

Has anybody emailed RTE about these things yet?

Yeah, those dogs look very cheap & jaggeddy. (I can't stand them)

I do like that TG4 dog aswell. At least it doesn't drag your eyes away from the picture & it's nice and small.

    What are RTE thinking?

The choice most people would make between watching eastenders on BBC1 or RTE has been pushed to BBC1 even further.
Either watch it on RTE with a big DOG in the corner, ads in the middle and no widescreen OR uninterupted widescreen with no crap on the screen on BBC1

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,177 ✭✭✭oneweb

Yukky  Don't like 'em at all :(

The RTEone is too white, too big and flickers at the top and bottom (my guess is that's where the scanlines are interfering/clashing?) very very distractingly. I would much prefer a semi-opaque or even just an embossed-looking DOG. Or better still, none at all!

Came across this , albeit somewhat garish itself.

    It is what it's.

A word of warning to those of you lucky enough/wealthy enough (!)to own a plasma TV screen, it seems that DOGS can cause a permanent mark on such flat screen devices

This topic was covered on a =Dutch consumer program last Sunday.

I am attaching a screen-print from a Philips User manual, However it seems this is a know issue for all Plasma TV screens.

On the program last Sunday it was mentioned that German TV Stations "move" the position of their DOG's to help prevent problems with this "'burn-in" issue.

If you buy a plasma TV screen in the Netherlands, it seems you are often warned about RTL4, because their DOG seems to damage many Plasma TV screenshttp://www.p4c.philips.com/mprdata/021216/0212160113_dfu.pdf

The have the N2 dog on during The Den while the have an Den DOG.

Question: do the it mater if the DOG is in colour in relation to Plasma screens?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 42 ActingThe Magot

.... from the info I have seen whether the DOG is in colour or not is not specifically the issue with plasma screens, however someone who actually works in either broadcasting or in the electrical retail business probably have a better insight into this potential problem, perhaps some of these experts can enlighten us all to the reasons why this problem occurs...
Needless to say I am not the proud owner of a plasma screen! I just thought it this was of relevance to the discussion
    .
