newbie looking to change their physique

Hi I'm new here and am looking for advice on how to tone up and look better.
Basically I've been pretty inactive for years and now at the ripe old age of 28 want to do something about it. I'm not very overweight - 12 stone 4 - 6ft tall. I would love to become more muscular more than anything else.

I happened to see an episode of baywatch on the tv last night and was comparing myself to those athletes and it showed me that I've got a long way to go.

My wife also wants to get fit. She does callanetics for toning but would like to do more.

Basically what I'm looking for here is information and advice.

What should we do if we want to make a significant difference in how we look and appear? Is it necessary to join a gym or could we do it at home with hand wieghts or something along those lines?

Is it possible to transform yourself and how long would it take to achieve a significant difference?

Any advice or suggestions would be welcomed.

Take a look through the sticky links at the top of the page for random bits of information. Or search back through older posts (these sort of information requests are kind of common here).

If you want to get more muscular, my opinion is that yes, this will ideally see you joining a gym and getting into weight training.

Training at home requires more discipline and for many the environment is not conducve to hard work.

Again there is a lot of stuff here already discussed on the topic. More specific questions get better answers these days as people have seen the general ones too often and stopped repeating themselves.

If you have a wife keen on getting in better shape also - you can train together and use each other as a hook to make sure you go when you planned to.

If weights is not your thing - the simplest idea is to get into cycling, jogging or rowing together.

Try to get a clearer idea of exactly what you want to achieve.

    JAK.

    TheJuggler..

You can make significant changes in a year.

But then you have to decide that this is something you would like to spend 3-4 days a week "reshaping" your body,.

First you have to decide on a training regime.

    This is just an example

    Day 1 Chest and Triceps
    Day 2 Legs
    Day 3 Shoulder and Calves
    Day 4 Back and biceps

    Mon, Wen, Thur and Saturday

Buy protein supplement; drink this directly after in water and before going to bed with milk.

Eat clean food chicken, red meat etc 6 meals a day.

I could post a pic how I look after 10 months of this training if you want me to.

Thanks guys sorry for being too general.

If it is possible to train at home what equipment would I need? Would free weights be enough? And if so what size weights should I go for?

MooseMaN I'd like to see those pics - it would be motivating for me to see what can be achieved.

I think it would be a good idea to join a gym together with your wife. Its easier to go there together. Doing some workouts at home... dont know about that... you will probably do that for 3 weeks and then get tired of it. Besides gym is more fun I think, afterwards you can treat yourself with sauna, steam bath or a swim, well thats at least what Im doing. The trainers there can also give you advice on what exercise you could do to train certain body parts.
