Its been a while since we had one of these threads, so lets get the ball rolling again.

Lets set a ground rule - everyone hates the insurance/finance/hearingaid ads on Digital TV ("Yes you can!", "Elephant.co.uk.elephant.co.uk.elephant.co.uk.f*ck.off.you.twat") etc. etc. so lets leave those out.

    Personal faves at the moment:
    - Heineken ad with Jennifer Anniston.
    - New Nike ad with musical chairs.
    - Ariel Ad with the MILF. :)

    Personal hates at the moment:
    - Meteor ads with flying hamsters/gophers (or whatever they're supposed to be).
    - The french beer ad with the red shoes.
    - Any cadburys buttons ad - "They're mad!" (No, they're f**king stupid)
    - Disprin Direct (helps you hotwire cars)

    I'll think of more later!

    - Dave.

Homage MUST be paid to those old Tenants ads with the walking talking beerglasses. "Ah could MURDER a pint!"

    Pure hilarity.

best ads of the year have to be the one for fosters where yer man does a bungee and a crocodile bites his head off

and the ad that all the little babies are smoking (on english TV "if you smoke your child smokes")

cant think of ne bad ones at the mo

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,799 ✭✭✭Tha Gopher

The bizarre futuristic ad for kerrygold or some other butter with the red haired one. Its a bit mad
I only saw it once but there was an ad for a book by that woman irish author(cant recall her name). Its too cheesy to explain. You just had to see it to believe it.
If they are still running the food poisoning ads
    Psychic Hotline Ads
Those awful ads for persil with the girl and her boyfriend who is made of cloth. Pair of arsecandles. And yer ones ma is a rehab too.

    Good ads
The Heineken ad with Jennifer Aniston. The first ad in a while featuring a celebrity which isnt retarded(me thinks to woeful overrated Nike and Pepsi ads brownosing Man U and the like, and that godawful courtney cox coke ad)
The anti binge drinking one where the guy should have stopped talking, though TBF its a rip off of the Budweiser wedding ad,but then again i think Bud sponsers that ad

Ive never liked Nike ads at all bar the 1998 airport football one. Im more of a reebok man myself :)

    Good
    - The Carlsberg range (if Carlsberg did nightclubs... etc.)
    - Piz Puin self tanning product
    - The Heineken ad involving Jennifer Aniston. Nice turn-around from their previous clichéd, stereotype ridden 'bottles from different places in the world' ads

    Bad
    - Persil ads. Right from the 'user testimonials' to the 'cutesy cartoons'

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 31,967 ✭✭✭✭Sarky

The makers of Red Bull ads must die.
Dial-a-quiz, or whatever it's called, is an abysmal travesty.
And that wierd 5th element style butter ad is just horrible. It makes no sense. She buys a tub of butter with a gold nugget. This leaves her with a tub of butter, and no money to buy something to spread it on! WTF? And the slogan "Have you felt the power of [butter's name]? is just painful.

i really hate that ad with yer man in the laundrette betting how some womans washing machine is broken due to limescale. i change the channel when i see him crouched down in front of the camera

Musical Chairs - Nike, is fantastic. Not split your sides funny, but very very amusing, I'm thinking that quite a few people will not get it.

Dutch tolerance test - Heineken, á la "excuse me miss, have you anything else than Heineken....."
    Absolutley fantastic.
By the way, their beer is simply horrid, never drink it.

    I HATE the Danone ads
the one where yur wan comes in and says to the other

    "I'm shattered"
"are we going to the cinema?"
"nothing ever seems to slow you down"
" that's because I've started looking after my digestion"

    Really?
well does it protect you against a punch in the head cos that's what you're getting?
They just prey on people's stupidity. We don't NEED Danone to live thanks very much.

I Love that new Honda Accord ad (the long version)
"Isn't it great when everything just works?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,093 ✭✭✭BKtje

Im assuming that honda ad is the one with all the bits of the car doing the dominoe effect thingy. That ad is fantastic.

I love the carlsberg ads, best of which is the flatmates one, almost makes me want to drink the horrible crap :)

As there are no best ads only least worst ones I'll nominate the Honda ad.

The worst? Well too many to list but Gillian Quinn is very annoying.

"Practically kiddie porn at this stage...some things we dont need to see"

I totally agree dude. Everyone knows they need nappies for their kids so why advertise it? I mean god every time they come on, the channel gets changed.

Once, 4 of the damn things were on different channels at the same time. This was during prime time broadcasting to.

Just think of the kids who are shown the videos of them acting in nappy ads when they are teens and adults:D

Since you put it into my head I have to quote the other line

"Come On We're going to be late" (Yeah someone slap her for me)

The weird butter add, I thought that was for Water.
The worst? Well too many to list but Gillian Quinn is very annoying.

The one I hate the most is the one where kids kill the old lady because they kicked the ball in her window and she wouldn't give it back.

Petit Danone Gervais or something haven't seen it for a while.

"Why did you do it kiddies?"
"Because the cartoon dinosaur told us to"
"Come On We're going to be late" (Yeah someone slap her for me)

ALL Danone ads should be destroyed.

And there's the "the black would make you look slimmer"

Oh Dear Jeebus! why do you mock me?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,477 ✭✭✭weemcd

oh the best ad ever invented has to be the john west salmon, this man is fishin for salmon, and then a bear catches it, him and the bear start kung fu fightin and then the man, gos look and eagle and points up, kicks the bear in the balls, and then drives away on a moped!! it has to be seen.

One of the worst, is the new harp one, some guy sends a tray of larger to his friends on a mexican wave. its has to be seen to show how crap it is!

il look for a link for the bear one

'Moneypenny' with that rapidly decaying songstress Linda Martin is pretty bad purely for the completely patronising level it addresses it's target audience at.

Exagerating here but the script goes along the lines of 'Decide on amount you wish to borrow - for example EUR200,000. Then decide the duration you want the loan repayment spread over. Divide the number of weekly repayments into the lump sum and that decides your weekly repayment amount! It's that simple!'

Seriously tho, anyone who needs the concepts of loan repayments explained to them at THAT level really shouldn't be trusted with thier families financial problems to begin with!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,617 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

Anyone notice how certain ads are changed (presumably after bad feedback?)

The "that's because I've started looking after my digestion" Danone ad was drastically shortened to one line (one of the women saying "tastes great!").

Another ad was for some kind of sun block..... gorgeous looking latin american girl in a two piece bikini, great body, then she smiles and there is a mouthful of crooked teeth! Latest versions of that ad are all closed-mouth....

Have any other ads been noticeably changed?

    - Dave.

Yeah I remember that. I got a bit of a fright when she smiled alright. It's a cruel world.

I hate nappy ads! Do they really need to show the kids arse ffs!? I don't want to see that! We know where nappies go.

The Kandoo (?) arse-wipe adds are gas though. That cartoon frog bending over and wiping his arse with a big stupid smile on his face is hilarious! Can't believe they can show that.

King of the potty or whatever the stupid slogan is.

I totally agree about that whole "do they really need to show their bottoms on TV. I mean come on.........not cool ad people.

I enjoyed the original Eircom "hi speed" ad. The one with the two bikers pulling up to the pedestrian stop and the mouse flies by. Very good ad.

Also the ads that launched Meteor. The plumber one was good.
Any of you ring the number that was on the side of the Van? You got through to a mock plumber answering machine. Excellent thinking......

BEST: Carlsbourg. Especilly the new one with the bloke looking for a room to rent. I'd give my left bollax......

Worst: All Pantene, eye liner, lipstick, Max Factor ect ect ect AAAAAAGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 467 ✭✭Jokah

    "All Pantene"

I forgot about those ads. Remember the one with the Towel running around the town after two women? That was recently shown on a "How did they get away with that" program.

Thankfully I work during the day and I miss those stupid loan ads and "are you in debt? We can help" Moronic ads. I believe a lot of those were dodgy to.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,608 ✭✭✭✭sceptre

    Admiral Car Insurance.

    Worst adverts ever.

"Boo, hoo, I can't get cheap car insurance..."

Even worse than those "chicks drink cofee and talk about Diamond insurance" ads

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,265 ✭✭✭aidan_dunne

Okay, I can't believe we're two pages into this thread and nobody has yet mentioned the infamous......

    Food poisoning ads. :D

"Now I shudder every time I hear the word..... picnic!" Sweet Jaysus!

In the words of The Comic Book Store Guy from 'The Simpsons', "Worst TV Ads..... Ever!"

I have to agree with the Carlsberg ads (particularly the current 'Flatmates' one) and the Honda "dominos" ad being some of the best ads ever made. And, let's face it, any ad that manages to squeeze in 'Rappers Delight' in it has to be pretty damn good! :D

I also love the Irn-Bru ad with the ram-raiding granny in her electric wheelchair. And does anyone remember the classic Tango ads? Not the current ones, which I think are pretty crap, but the ones from years ago with the Geordie bloke and the other fella doing the commentary on what's happening in the ad? "Oh Tony, look at this fellow here!" "He's certainly not Wee Willy Winky." And the ones with the big fat orange tango man and the guys getting slapped in the face with fish. Classic! :D

I'm over in canuckland for the summer so all i watch is fnckin ads. for the most part, they are utter bollicks, irish/british ads are works of genius by comparison.

that said, some of the US/Canadian ads are pretty good. there are 3 main beer brand ads on at the mo:

Labatt Blue: these ads are pretty funny, vaguely similar to the WICKED ads on irish TV. blokes pranking their mates and so on. eg. two guys are searching in the grass for a ring, their mate comes to help them then they grab his underwear and pull him along the grass while wedgied.

Coors Light: also going after the male demographic, they show a couple of different golf sketches where it is serious until a very attractic female golfer appears and they party with coors light. i like these ads, they seem intelligent! :p 'Golf is all about concentration. observing the wind, checking your lie... *enter hotty* oooooooh, better put me down for a bogie!'

Molson Canadian: horribly nationalistic. each ad ends with the customary 'I.AM.CANADIAN!' slogan.

best ad- The Honda one which everyone has already mentioned. Only the full long one though.
Th WKD ones are good and imitatable.

Worst ads- Any for persil and the 118 118 ones. I don't know why, they're just annoying. Probebly because they seem so long.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 590 ✭✭✭herbie747

    "Elephant.co.uk" ad's are retarded.
    "Dorito's" ad's are sooo irritating.

All ad's totally suck a*s. I've started muting them about a month ago. I find myself less irritated nowadays.
Just got SKY+ last week, so now I just record most programmes, and watch them 10mins later, so I can fast forward the ad's at 30x. Sweeeeet.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,018 ✭✭✭Hairy Homer

I actually like the GAA ads at the moment. The 'Why do they do it? - the social life, the respect, the fame?' ones.

The Barnados ad with the mechanic talking like a disturbed child is pretty eerie as well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 467 ✭✭Jokah

"Barnados ad with the mechanic talking like a disturbed child is pretty eerie as well."

Very good point. Also those internet chatroom ads where the camera moves slowly down the picture to come to a man speaking like a kid. Weird and freaky...quite uncomfortable. I'm glad they are pushing it out there though.

Hard Hitting ads like the English RSPCA and RSPCC ads are quite moving but I suppose worth it.

I still hate those Nappy ads and potty ads and not being cruel but the ads for third world countries. Sorry they don't make me stop and listen, more change the channel.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 467 ✭✭Jokah

    "forward the ad's at 30x"

Yeah I have started doing that at night if I am out. God bless the BBC for having no ads whatsoever. But I have started to tape more things now so I can forward through the ads. I mean an hour long program becomes 40 mins.

    Good point.

Yes they do i was out there a few years back, and was watching the X files the movie and the ads were horrible, They didnt even have a screen to say what the film was. It just cut from the movie to and ad no screen to say x files the movie on channel whatever.

When they came back from the ads they did have a splash screen sometimes.

One thing they did have which i like was a tv guide channel and rolling guide of what was on on every channel.

J!sus Im completely forgetting about the hilarious Sprite ads! Now they are funny. Very funny in fact...

And what are 7up doing about it? Resurrecting an old logo from the 1980s. Are 7up just letting Sprite take over the market?

th add with all the different car parts was unreal. superl33t.

the tenants adds wer excellent, "Theres been another murder!"

The Xbox commercial that was eventually banned, with the guy getting born, shooting out, flying out the window, aging in mid air and then crashing into his grave was truely class, dunno why they banned it though:confused:

The new ribena ads (i think its ribena) with the old guy trying to be "hard" and "cool" are really really ****e, i mean hes a prick!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,617 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

I meant to mention the Cheesestrings ad - the one where a kid fakes an illness, and convinces his "mummy" that its because of a "Calalcium" deficiency....

Its only in the last frame of the ad you realise its supposed to be a Ferris Beuller pisstake (and a very poor one).

    - Dave.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,799 ✭✭✭Tha Gopher

What about the attack the snack ads? With all the kids in a dark basement planning a revoloution because theyre tired of their parents telling them not to play with their food or some sh1te.

The charity ad with the one singing amazing grace goes on too long. Its a bit unsettling for some reason, sort of a conversation killer.

And what about the sunny delight ads with the healthy eating gimp?
"Its sugar free candyfloss"-that kid needs the sh1t beaten out of him. Ive never drank sunny delight but apparently its about as good for your health as a packet of fags*

That new ad for Gap with Madonna and Missy Elliot is also annoying, maybe because that Hollywod song is so crap IMO. Though it in no way compares to the ad a few years ago,the Gap christmas ad,with a load of stage school trained stuck up kids doing some dance routine thing. As camp as christmas, quite appropriately.

*exaggeration but apparently it isnt as healthy as the ads claim, though i wouldnt give a sh1te as the only health concious thing i do is drink 4 litres of water per day.

    Hated Adverts:
Almost all to be honest, almost given up watching tv thanks to the wounder of DSL :)

But if I was to pick a few

    Hated Adverts:
    - Nike ad with musical chairs, its wayy to long and annoying (especially hate the company after reading No Logo)
    - ANY Nappy Advert

    Most Hated Of All!
    Any Eircom advert EVER made.

    ----

    Liked Adverts:
    - That UK advert with smoking baby's etc (health promotion)
    - Any of the speeding adverts (weird eh?)
    - Sneakers Advert (I'm batman...)

    Best of All!
The OLD Carlsberg advert "If Carlsberg did do movies they'd be the best in the world"
    went alone the lines of

"From the makers of lethal rage 4! They bring you Jane Austons, Pride & Preduce"
There firing guns at each other and even a rocket luncher, about 5-6 years old but not seen anything better since.
