Hmmm, I've been living away from Eire for 5 years now and when my sister last came to visit me I asked her to bring me a can of rock shandy. Pity thet when she actually got to France I discovered that she had brought me a can of Club Shandy instead.

Can you still get Rock Shandy. I think it tasted a little like ginger ale and had a 0.1 (0.01?)% alcohol level. From what I remember I think even the pioneers blessed the stuff :)

IIrc club shandy contained the alcohol and rock shandy didnt.
I don't think club shandy is availible anymore.
Are you sure she didnt bring you a can of Club Rock Shandy, as in Club Orange Club? Made by C&C.

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 10,912 Mod ✭✭✭✭Ponster

Yeah...she brought me the Club Rock Shandy by C&C (orange/yellow label).

So did they just launch a new product with a new taste and an old name?

Finches made some sort of shandy years ago,im not sure if they still do. My dad used to get a sh1tload of it free from the bar where he worked.
I used to drink quite a bit of it when i was a kid. Id no idea there was alcohol in it:D (though at 0.1% i dont think a bottle would get even a baby tipsy). It tasted very similiar to fizzy orange IIRC.

Club Rock Shandy is just fizzy orange and lemon together - there's no alcohol in it at all. There was a real shandy (with a tiny amount of beer) in a brown shiny can around a few years ago but I can't remember who made it (Club?). When I lived in England, Schweppes sold it wasn't the same brand over here (Irl).

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 10,912 Mod ✭✭✭✭Ponster

Yeah Kolodny; that's the one I'm talking about. In the brown can. I had presumed it was C&C or someone Irish but maybe not.

God, I thought I was the only one who remembered that stuff. Years ago when we were wee nippers we'd go to the local swimming pool a couple of evenings a week during the summer and just around the corner was a small shop that sold the shandy in a brown can. We'd go and buy a can of it after coming out of the pool and walk home pretending we were drinking beer! :D If I remember correctly, it tasted gorgeous, and we all loved the stuff. I haven't seen it around for donkey's years but I'd love to get some somewhere again because it was lovely.

I think it was maybe just called Club Shandy and the confusion is stemming from the fact that Rock Shandy (non-alcoholic, fizzy orange and lemon mixed together) just happens to be made by C&C and is one of their "Club" branded drinks, like Club Orange and Club Lemon.

Club Shandy was made by C&C, It was essentially the same can except it was brown, with stripes going down the side.

A little off topic but, did anyone see the new 750ml bottle of club orange?

    Very Nice.

I remember one of us bought a can of Club Shandy once by accident, and my mum was mortified - she's teetotal. You'd swear we were alcos. We didn't even get a taste.

Used to love Rock Shandy, but really sickened myself off it the summer before last. Would go into the shop and say I'll take something different, and start thinking of something else, and by habit just pick out a bottle. I do that too often.

Anyone else remember the "Super Cans"? When you could get a coke the size of a beer can?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17,163 ✭✭✭✭Boston

Nope, there was the liver damaging total or 0.5% volume alcohol in them...

I remember super cans. They were way cooler than today's plastic bottles. (I think coke tastes different depending on whether you drink it out of a bottle or a can).

I'm glad that I'm not the only one to notice that. I think the can stuff is nicer.

    Yeah definatly.
I got club shandy about 2 years ago. It's actually really nice. Haven't seen it since. I remember when i was about 10, thinking it was so cool because it had beer in it. 0.5% alcohol.

, "was" what do you mean was, you can still order rock sandy's in allmost any bar, except the spy bar because their a bunch of closest homosexuals. I watch as the bar men make the drink, theres no alcohol in them.

Right, I find the can's are a lot nicer.

Or It could be that I usually buy cans for a quick drink when Im at work and dying of the thirst.

They usually last about 10 seconds, when Its warm out.

Yes, cold cans of coke are a lifesaver after work/study etc.

Bottles just don't have the same effect. Maybe it has something to do with the way ******* form on a metallic surface as opposed to a plastic surface?

They aren't talking about those shandys, they're just a mix of club orange and lemon.
I remember that other stuff, haven't seen it for sale in years. I always thought it tasted rotten.

So.....just back from the pub here in Paris and spent the evening with a rep of C&C who explained to me that....

Club Shandy (in the brown can) contained 0.1% af the hard stuff and has been taken off the market since 1994 or so. It seems that it just wasn't selling anymore.

    R.I.P.

I'm quoting myself. Why on earth was the word bub_bles censored? On a thread about Rock Shandy and all!

Seems to be a bit of confusion here.
Club Rock Shandy is the mix of orange and lemon, you can buy it in cans or bottles and if you ask for it in a pub you'll get a pint of the stuff made with a mixer bottle of orange and lemon.

Club Shandy is the stuff the original poster was looking for that's not available anymore, that was the stuff with the alcohol and in the brown can.

Next time you're in a pub, ask for a Smithwicks shandy. sorta similar :p

Do a search with the aforementioned censored word as a username. Then go waaaaay back with the threads it returns and pick up on a little bit of boards.ie history. It's quite a retro topic in itself actually :)

Jeez rock shandy that's bringing back some memories for me, although I'm Scottish my mother is Irish and I spent every single school summer holiday in Monaghan town. I remember a crowd of us all getting and pretending we were getting drunk then fooling about like we were.

    Brill days :D

For those of you who like to over-indulge in the sauce on a Friday and/or Saturday night, then shuffle down to watch the footie on a Saturday/Sunday afternoon...i highly recommend a rock shandy, pint glass, ice. Quenches the thirst and somehow seems to relieve hangover symptoms. Sweeet.

Super cans were cool. Even though I never really drank fizzy drinks as a kid. (cue wierdo accusations..)

Who the f*** posts an answer to a question that was written 9 years ago. Taking the retro angle a little too far I think!

Just to clarify, 9 years ago were you talking about something like bass shandy?
    Wiki wrote:

In the UK there is also a carbonated soft drink called Shandy Bass, introduced in 1972. It is a shandy made with Bass beer, which is mixed such that it contains 0.5% ABV. It is made by Britvic.[38] Its greatest popularity is in Northern England.[36]

Rock Shandy is lemon and orange

Yeah, it was something like that. Even 9 years ago I'd forgotten what it tasted like so I can't tell you much else. I do seem to remember people referring to it as 'Rock Shandy' even though (I think) its proper name was Club Shandy. Like I said before, I never liked the stuff anyway so I didn't really notice/care when it disappeared because I only ever had one or two cans of it.

I would buy it if it came back. Tried the Aldi and Lidl ones and just don't taste the same.

    Twilight Zone :D

OT, I remember Club Shandy, it was lovely.. Us kids used to feel like real badasses drinking it on account of the 0.01% Volume :pac:

The great thing about Club Shandy is you could buy "beer" no matter what age you were :D

There was another one called Top Deck. I think it was a bit stronger?
    41570_85935055919_710389_n.jpg

    Anyone remember that?

A huge coincidence, I came across this thread the other day and had a quick read. Wasn't too sure what ye were on about because I was just starting school around the time this stuff went off the market but definitely remember drinking it!

Then as I was driving in towards town on the Navan Road about an hour ago I popped into the Mace and spotted a brown can, of Shandy! Alas it was the Barr brand rather than Club. I don't know if this is the same as the ones they have in Aldi/Lidl??

Having never tasted this type so it I bought it anyway and checked the back of the can, it read 'Not more than 0.5% by volume alcohol'

Here's a pic, i'm just about to crack it open and see what all the fuss is about!! :D

Drink it through a straw, at least that was the 'theory' I remember with the other stuff :pac:
