I want to start on this Atkins Diet and I was wondering does anyone have any links that break down what you should and shouldn't eat when on this diet.

I've looked at Atkins.com and there's loads of stuff on there but yet it doesn't seem to have any charts etc. that show you what the different foods you should stop eating are.

Any help would be appreciated as I am getting fat.

There are reports about the Atkins Diet that dont sound so nice......

Chronic constipation, skin flaking, terrible breath, mood swings.....

If I were you, I would do the WeightWatchers programme, or Rosemary Conley. They are a bit more sensible than cutting out carbs completely.

All these so called 'miracle diets' are a complete waste of time!!

To lose weight all you need to do is eat sensibly and exercise!! It takes alot of perserverance but its the only way to do it :)

Well the actual science behind the diet is quite sound so I wouldn't class it as a miracle or fad diet. It can/does work quite well for some people seemingly and I may give it a go.

Mind you if I start to feel ****e I will kick it in - and I don't know if I could put up with having bad breath all the time.

Maybe exercise is the way forward though - godammit - I was looking forward to being able to eat big dirty fries for breakfast.

I went on the Atkins diet just before christmas. Lost a stone in just two weeks! But it's not advisable to do this kind of diet long term.

You are allowed eat just 20g of carbs a day which is the equivalent of a slice of bread! You can eat as much fat and protein as you like. I lived on meat, fish, eggs, cheese, nuts etc for 2 weeks. But you cant have bread, potatoes, cereal, fruit, veg, beer etc

You will need to drink loads of water and take vitamins while you are on the diet.

I wouldn't go near this diet unless you want to do long term damage to your liver and kidneys, processing all that protien just ****s with your system and as pointed out already, leaves you with some bad side effects.............

As for what to eat, anything meaty and avoid all carbs except for a small portion of bread/pasta/rice with your evening meal*.

You should also talk to your doc before going on any diet as some of them can have adverse effects for people with health conditions

*note im not a dietician so this is only going by what ive heard

Buy the book about the diet ... it is quite large, but don't let that put you off, it is very detailed and explains the science behind the diet and the various stages in the diet.

The diet only becomes dangerous if you actually don't know what you are doing and don't follow the book. For example the strict diet is quite damaging if you to it long term, but you are actually not supposed to do it long turn. After two weeks you are supposed to switch different diet where you eat things like fruit.

You are also not supposed to flood your body with protien, you are supposed to only eat a normal amount of protien.

It is also not a miricle diet, Atkins says that if you don't change your actual life style and eating habits you will just put back any weight you lose in the 2 weeks.

to recap, DON'T do the diet half-hoc with info you have pieced together. By the book, read all the science bit not just the diet bit and if you still want to do it, do it seriously.

    Try the CKD Diet.
    Cyclic Ketoacidotic Diet.
Better suited to folks who train or like to eat a little carbs for sanity#!
    Enjoy!

Unless someone starts up an Atkins forum on boards.ie, one place you can get good information and support is on the Concise Low Carb UK Yahoo group.
