Pints ... again

    Lo all.

So I'm back to my old dilemma again.

My training routine for the last 18 months has been fsckloads of running, and just enough time spent on lifting to prevent (much) catabolism.

Over this time I've been running 3 - 4 times a week, between 4 and 11km, so working out around 15 miles a week. Not spectacular, I'll admit, but better than nothing.

My weight has not changed a single bit.

I realise that I must change something in the equation, and can't be my food diet cos that's pretty good already; therefore we're talking alcohol consumption.

The majority of my social life is meeting different groups of friends and family "for a pint", I can easily go 12, 13 nights in a row having beers with various parties, your good selves included. This must not stop.

    But I can modify it.

Andy already suggested to me that 1) I cut down the amount I drink - good call, and 2) I try drinking the lighter beers e.g. Coors - not so good call, it tastes like something not very nice.

So I'm thinking about switching off beer altogether, and starting to drink something less calorific, and less of it (relative to the amount of pints).

Has anyone successfully given up the pints for any real period of time, say over a month? Any suggestions as to what to drink?

How do I face Niamh in Grogans and tell her "No, I don't want any of your beautiful Guinness, give me a Diet Coke instead."?

I think it must be done.

    Please comment, cheers.
    Al.

I tried to lay off the pints, and drinking vodka instead. Didn't work very well. I find myself lashing through the vodkas, and then sometimes I just "need" a pint. So sorry I can't help, but I was unsuccessful myself :(

I used to drink quite a lot of Guinness and would then switch to Hennessy when I got full. I was developing a serious belly.
I have not given up on drinking Guinness completely, however it is far more likely for me to start off drinking Hennessy and stay on it.
This (combined with a bit more excercise and cutting down on eating junk) has helped to reduce the belly somewhat*

I would therefore recommend a trial period off the Guinness and onto whiskey/brandy/vodka/gin (say 3 months) to see how you get on.

*Although I'm sure it's doing far more damage to my liver.

Whiskey and blackcurrant is quite nice as an alternative to beer.

apparently there's actually less calories in a pint of guinness than in a pint of beer. about 200 calories for a pint of guinness V 22o calories for a pint of beer.
i love the auld guinness so i know exactly how you feel, and i don't think i could give it up completely!!!

Not to put you down but 15 miles pw is F all. Up the mileage slowly to 30 mpw and you'll notice severe weight reductions.

True, it's hard to do given time restraints, but I should make more time for it. Also, a 92kg guy running 15 miles is burning a lot more calories than a 60kg guy doing the same distance.

Dont know about that Bannor- it definitely seems to me that the beer is the problem. Trojan, I imagine it was the Coors light you were talking about? If so I dont know if this will be any use. I had to lose some weight myself and went down to drinking twice a week. Then I'd drink about 4/5 pints of Coors Light then switch to Bacardi/Vodka and coke. Its not ideal but I want to have some fun as well dammit!:D I did swear off the beer during the week though- and feel better for it

True, but a 92kg guy running 30 miles is burning twice the calories of a 92kg man running 15 miles

Yeah, booze is the killer on a diet. I refuse to cut out beer though - feck it, I'm not THAT desperate to get a flat stomach :)

I've found that you can pace yourself better if you drink a bottled beer. Excluding manky light beers, Stella has the lowest calorie count of the bottled beers afaik - about 160 calories in a bottle.

Drinking whiskey also helps - drink a straight whiskey, or on ice, and you can sip at it and only go through one whiskey in the time that everyone else on your round is doing a full pint of beer.
