    Hi Daniel,

Thank you for your interest in internet connections from Irish Broadband, & apologies that we didn't get back to you about Ripwave testing. We have started testing at this stage, & I spoke to my colleague Ruairi about you getting ripwave at your address - he thinks that you should be able to pick up a signal. As a result, if you would like to part-take in Ripwave testing, please contact me on 206 3773 or by e-mail & I can take your details for arranging an install.

    Kind regards,
    Elaine Carroll

booo yeah!!! i was just about to order netsource, when i decided to give ibb a last chance to gimme some free bb, i wasnt expecting that!! now i play the waiting game

congrats, when i rang in a week or two ago i was told that the trials were all finished... damn you. you get it free now :-(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,417 ✭✭✭griffdaddy

how long should i expect it to be free for? i had a prior arrangement for testing but they fu*cked me over. so when i emailed that she must have looked at the old list. how fast are download speeds does anyone know? what does testing involve? I have very little network experience so if people wanna post up how to check pings whatever they are, or whatever i'll run a check and post the results

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,943 ✭✭✭Mutant_Fruit

expect it to be free until it's officially released.

As for pings, just open a dos box and type in: ping ENTER_IP_HERE -n 20
    e.g. ping www.boards.ie -n 20
    or ping 195.26.12.231 -n 20

then just copy and paste the results here

Are they still only testing in Tallaght area?

I had a LOS for their standard Residential service last week, but failed and would really like to get this Ripwave service.

The guy doing the LOS said that Ripwave would be available very soon, but I'm not sure if he was just talking about the Tallaght tests or the Guinness/Media Hub mast which is closest to me.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,943 ✭✭✭Mutant_Fruit

for download speeds, ripwave will be as fast as IBB wireless, with the exception that Ripwave is 20-1 contection, wireless is 8-1.

Heres what my 8-1 contention speeds are like (check attackment). Thats about the last hours usage (maybe more).

As for pings, the Tallaght tower is being upgraded tonight and that should fix ALL ping problems on IBB, wireless and ripwave. So if you;'re on the tallaght tower check the ping after about 8ish tonight (or after you notice the 30 mins when connetcion is off due to upgrades do it after that). Pings should drop from 150's to about 40's or less.

no it's off the 3 rock mast

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,943 ✭✭✭Mutant_Fruit

The pings aren't great on Ripwave it seems, or it could be the tower. Are they always like that? Currently i get between 10ms and 1000ms, usually between 200-400 though, but it spikes all over the place. hopefully the upgrade in tallaght will fix this.

downloads are good aswell stable at 53 - 59kb/s i've included a pic of downloading with DAP of the Redhat 9 shrike-i386-disc1.iso after a couple of min's into the download at 57.4 KB/s.

For anyone who is interested in the install process it's quite simple i've the Ethernet version of the Navini Ripwave modem there is also a USB version their link is here if you want a look see a Cat5 cable is pluged into the back of the modem and then into your network card, modem on it assigns the modem an ip address by DHCP and thats it nothing else there is an optional monitor called "Navini Networks Connection Monitor" which is a gui showing you the signal strength and signal quality this software only works with windows but im sure thw modem works with Linux and Macs as long as you have your network card installed correctly ive had the trial for nearly 2 weeks now it disconnects the very odd time (twice since ive had it) but over all I think its great

Well i'm not sure the installers set it up and it works what else could i check. The modem is here in the attic room pointing out the window in fact it has a perfect LOS with the base station which i can see from my window.

    my pings are still

could this this show an underlying problom that could be affecting other things?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,180 ✭✭✭Serbian

    Hey Kappar,

Those pings seem typical of the LOS service from IBB. Maybe trying pinging www.boards.ie as that is a server that is in Ireland for sure. It seems the yahoo.ie one is in the UK at least. If you are getting high pings to www.boards.ie, then I reckon you should give them a call or drop them a mail. It might be a simple setting on your radio that is messing things up.

It is also possible that there is some local interference on the same band as the Ripwave technology. I can't remember what spectrum it transmits on [2.4 GHz?] but if that is the case, then there is probably little that can be done for you.

I know it doesn't really bother you, but the fact that it is a trial, IBB will probably want to know about things like this so they can sort them out in the future for a customer who it will bother.

    Regards,

    Serb

Yeah i will tell them but he did say when setting it up that the pings would be high it just that Gorgon's getting good pings anywway i'll tell them

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,943 ✭✭✭Mutant_Fruit

@Gorgon: lucky devil... my IBB pings have gone to **** again. It seems i can only get a good ping after 11pm at night, which is a joke, as i can't stay up that late most days to enjoy a lag free game of CS. today i'm getting pings of up to 1000 in cs... grrr

I hoped that the tower upgrade would fix that, obviously not.

Is Ripwave frequency hopping? And have you're pings always been that stable and low? If they can't get this ping sorted, i'm gonna ask them to switch me to ripwave, and refund my previous installation.

Serbian is correct it is on the 2.4 Ghz band but theres also the option for IBB to go on the 2.6Ghz band later on, I know they have been in talks with comreg about it.

My advice is to take Serbian's check and see if anything is opperating near the modem at the same band, cordless phones (900mhz are ok) wireless networks etc. usually 4 foot distance between it and any electrical device should be ok.

And definitly ring IBB about it and tell them what your getting I know it might not be important because you dont play games but you know for the greater good and all that.

There is no such option, Chorus and Ntl have all the 2.6 band.

It will go to 3G in 5 years....maybe.

IBB have been in negotiation with Chorus about using some of their allocation and running a BNVO (Virtual Network)

What about the chorus license being redistributed? According to an article in the Independent yesterday (if my moemory isn't going) chorus lost their license and it is going to be redistributed in beaty contest style auction. I didn't pay that much attention to it at the time but it might be worth a look. And the Canopy system thats in todays Irish Times sounds like it might have some potential. Although still needing a line of sight. Nice download speeds though potentially. 10 mb as opposed to 512K. Someday...

mutant fruit, i live in ballyroan. real near the school and they told me they reckon i can get it, i'll know by wednesday. whereabouts are you? whats your name?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,943 ✭✭✭Mutant_Fruit

Excellant news!! i live the far end of ballyroan road... i won't say exactly where though... :-p but near blue havan.

I bitched so much that now i'm being offered an option to test ripwave :-D. I've already been contacted (yes they rang me!) by a member of the Ripwave team and they were uncertain if i'd get a signal... but i told em that i was in range of three-rock, but a tree blocked my LOS, thank god i didn;t say i was out of range.

Hopefully i'll get connected by tuesday. I'd be pretty surprised if they kept me waiting... i've been in touch with em everyday since wednesday 24th. The tech support guys must shudder when they hear my voice.... here are my currect ping stats:
    Ping statistics for 195.26.12.225:

Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:

Hopefully Ripwave will fix this nicely

we'll see about that. I intend to get myself hooked up asap, but the odds are very high that they'll move directly from your house to mine, considaring we're so close. So we'll both get ripwave in the same hour.

Damn right. Eircom are going down and out, they have a lowest caps & worst reports. I can't imagine people going with them when they see the cheaper alternatives.

the modem isnt where i would like it, it's downstairs not near the window, downloads are still good 50kb/s but it seems that upstairs directly at the window on the south-face of the house is the best place

how does it make a difference if it's near the window when the signal is coming through a load blockages already? do you have to sort out payment details while they install it for after the test, or do they get back to you?

i dont know about the payment side of it, later on last night the ping rate fell off a great deal and i was getting pings in the 1000 - 2000ms and timeouts, im back home now and its fine. It works of somesort of reflective technology so it wont get a good signal directly in front of a solid brick wall

so basically you're saying pings vary greatly depending on where the box is placed... well i should have no problems moving the box around and checking pings from different areas in my house

As it is, my LOS broadband pings are great again... i'm now getting average pings of 20 to my gateway.... but it still spikes occasionally. But it's quite playable. maybe they've fixed it again, maybe not. I've been told that the pings were fixed 3 times already, and each time it only lasted a few hours

still no sign of my ripwave, mutant, are you still gonna get yours installed? you might aswell, if only to get the engineers to come down our way

i got a call yesterday (thursday) saying that they can't get a signal out as far as ballyroan :-(. I'm not sure if i believe them though, they could just be trying to stop me testing ipwave... who knows. So as it is, i've still got the line of sight broadband.

However they did tell me that they were experienceing difficulties in the Tallaght tower, which was the first time they admitted they had problems, previously they were giving me the impression it was just me, but its not. THey said they don't know when the problems will be resolved though. But i guess it will be when they get more money to upgrade their servers.

well, tell me what signal strength you're getting, what your pings are like, what download speeds you get and any other relevant info like packet loss.

If you get a nice strong signal, then i might go right ahead and tell em to bring over a kit for me. But it seems the pings are better again today. I had a nice 2hour Counter-Strike session with pings of averaging 70 :-D best pings ever.
