I wouldn't hold your breath as I signed up 13th June and there's been nothing since except the 2 apology mails.

I signed up July 1, and was told that "maybe" I'll have it late this week. That said, they did say the line test results were still pending, so I have my doubts...

    Got my modem today :)

    Zipping along at 55k/s.

How large is the package the modems come in? I assume they're bigger than the average letterbox, and my postman has a nasty habit of arriving just after I leave the house. So it'll be 2008 before I get the poxy thing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 759 ✭✭✭El_MUERkO

Why not cancell your sub and go Netsource? or at least ring up and say if the engineer doest arrive by friday he need'nt bother.

OK, 2008 may have been something of an exaggeration. Cancelling my sub and starting the whole process all over again (at square one) with a new ISP would be kinda daft. I'd imagine I'll get home tonight to find one of those "You've got something waiting for you at the post office" receipts.
    *fingers crossed*

    Signed up 19th June,
Friday they told me I would have it that day,
Today they say hopefully this week
.....but he didn't sound very hopeful!
And I'm on ISDN, so I am beginning to lose all hope.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,538 ✭✭✭PiE

It's a little bit smaller than a shoe-box, definately won't fit through letter box.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 57 ✭✭CitySickness

Got the modem this morning, only had about 15 minutes to try and set it up - looked like the computer recognised the modem and the ADSL connection, but whenever I tried to use a browser or check email, nothing was happening.

I suspect it's something to do with the DNS address they give with the Mac documentation - 1.1.1.1 sounds kinda wrong to me... I'll check if they give a different address in the PC docs when I get home.

It's a Zyxel USB - little blue yoke - can't remember the model number.
Will get it for you when I get home this evening, if nobody else has jumped in by then.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,538 ✭✭✭PiE

    It's the ZyXEL Prestige 630

Not as funky as ye olde eircon Alcatel Speedtouch, but nifty all the same.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 57 ✭✭CitySickness

Funny you should say that - I've just borrowed a mate's Alcatel Speedtouch ethernet modem to compare and contrast between the two.

And yes, I fully expect a config. nightmare.
If anyone's got a full set of settings for Mac OSX & UTV Clicksilver & The Alcatel Speedtouch, I welcome your words.

As it turns out - talked to UTV tech support - the Mac documentation DOES carry the wrong DNS address...

So now that that's sorted, the USB LED on the modem keeps flashing on and off, and my download speeds are all over the place, not to mention timing out lots too.
    Anyone else have this problem?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,538 ✭✭✭PiE

Yah my USB light keeps flashing, don't think it was doing that yesterday though.

Download speeds have also gotten a lot worse, lucky if I hit 30k/s now, whereas yesterday I was getting 45-55k/s.

Hope it improves, 'cos that aint worth €47 every month!

Have also noticed that I've kept the same IP for the past 2 days even though I've reconnected numerous times, which is nice.

    I got netsource :)

UTV were taking too long, and I didnt want eircom to turn around again and pull the plug on my exchange :)

All is going well now, pings around 2-30ms to boards etc :)

Get better pings to UK game servers than to Irish one too. ~100ms to Radox/DC CS and about 60ms to jolt. Probably cos the routing is through London (better than IBB's routing through New York I suppose ;)

Can any other Clicksilver users take the test on this site:
    http://www.u.tv/speedtest

My results are less than impressive:

    948592 bytes transferred in 18.687 secs - 397 kbit
    948592 bytes transferred in 27.375 secs - 271 kbit
    948592 bytes transferred in 40.641 secs - 182 kbit
    948592 bytes transferred in 42.266 secs - 175 kbit
    948592 bytes transferred in 25.484 secs - 291 kbit
    948592 bytes transferred in 33.844 secs - 219 kbit

Hope it improves... and quick :/

Can I assume you have called them to tell them about the problems? If not do, and email them and call them again. The whole problem here, is everyone jumps on the "what a crap service" bandwagon and doesn't actually speak to the ISP in question. (not saying you are PiE, but thats generally what happens)

I got a mail from UTV today saying my account has been activated and I can start ussing my boradband connection now....I would get my modem tomorrow.
But I'm on an ISDN line and nobody has been in touch to convert my line.
Surely it isn't possible for my line to be activated for adsl while still on ISDN? I tried contacting utv support for a couple of hours this evening with no answer.

23rd July: Got an email this morning from UTV to say I've been activated and I can plug in my modem now - they sent me username etc to use.

But - as my ISDN line is still active... this cannot be true. I didnt try plugging in the modem as i was told to in case I fried it.
Rang Eircom and they said they were still working on changing the lines over...

Amazing - after a run-around-phone calls to companies. Apparently UTV have to do a bit, Eircom then have to do a bit(downgrade the line from isdn), then, get this, Esat have to activate the Broadband(maybe tomorrow).

Never knew Esat where in the equation for UTV BB.

I also got my modem today, and was surprised to find my line had also been activated. I'm awaiting my username and password now (have asked for it).

I signed up on July 1st, so they're not terribly late in delivering it..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 710 ✭✭✭BattlingCheese

Modem delivered today and my account/line was activated after a quick call.

Steady download speeds of 35-45kbs so I'm well chuffed and for tonight at least can happily say It was well worth the wait

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 777 ✭✭✭MarVeL

Phoned yesterday and was told it should be either Friday or earlier next week. When I get in from work theres a note(from an post) that theres a package waiting for me. With my ability to leap to a tall conclusion in a single bound I assume it is the modem (despite all evidence to the contrary) and an expedition to collect package is organised.

On opening it is indeed the modem. "Thats a start" I think but the line won't be on and I don't have a username/password as yet. I phone tech support and they have heard nothing as yet. Decided to install the modem anyway and notice a steady green ADSL light.

One short phone call later and all is set up and working just fine.

All in all a bit of a wait but we're here now

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 24 blueforest

I'm up an running now too. They seem to have got modems out very quickly in the last couple of days - looking at my clicksiler welcome email, my modem wasn't due till tomorrow. I'm also amazed that my line was activated just two days after passing prequalification.

All in all, I'm happy (for now)!

when did ye apply for it ?

To all the ppl who now have it, i would like to know were abouts in Dublin you all live?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 777 ✭✭✭MarVeL

Jonski : applied the 25th of June by post with a cheque received a receipt on the 2nd July

    Rasta: I'm in Lucan

    [edit]
btw the service seemed very choppy (several disconnects) between 9:30 and 11:00 but it's fine again now. ping to boards is taking an average of 75 ms but they still don't seem to be going through INEX

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,067 ✭✭✭tomk

Just applied today - used the account migration yolk, as I am already a UTV head. Currently using ISDN, but will get BB on a separate POTS line, so hopefully no headaches there (apart from ISDN disconnection fees). So looks like I can expect it in around a month's time?

I was originally planning a BB/WiFi extravaganza built around a Netgear DG824M router but some incidental expenses (food, clothes, etc) have knocked that on the head for the moment. So I think I'll setup a Smoothwall for the moment - I have an old Dell box that will do nicely. WiFi will have to wait.

I'll keep you all posted on UTV progress, so we can all compare notes. I'm in Bray, by the way, and have already passed the €ircon and E$at tests.

Modem arrived at 9 this morning. Plugged it all in and the adsl light came on. Phoned UTV and got my user id and password and have been on for the last half hour - around about the 420k mark at the moment.

    :D

Just came home and my ISDN network light was out. Turned on the PC and my ADSL light came on - Very Happy.
No word from Eircom, but seems that they can switch from ISDN to ADSL without coming to my house.

Thats interesting about the ISDN situation. My modem arrived literally minutes ago, but sadly I still have network light and crappy 6c a minute dialup! UTV tell me I should be sorted by Tuesday...make it be now!

    Cheers,

    Pete

Location wise Im on the Rochestown, Dublin exchange (285)

Yeah - my ISDN light went out yesterday - still no DSL this morning. Maybe when I get home hopefully - or its back to V90 for the weekend

The Eircom ISDN box was easy to remove from the wall.

Anyone what to buy some ISDN modems?? :D

ps. I'm in Blanchardstown Exchange and My UTV order went in on 26/6/2003

Same here............ Modem arrived at 9 this morning - I hadn't received an email with username password etc... so was pleasantly surprised - got the details from UTV, now cruising with 35-45k downloads ............ Mmmmmmmmmmmmm.

BTW, signed up about 19 June, residing on de Nortsoide, nice helpful smiley ppl on the utv cust service helpline - I'd say their working their socks off but were still nice about things on the phone - v. professional.

Actually, I'd be interested in an ISDN modem.
My line was failed even though my neighbour in the other half of this semi-D passed but he doesn't want broadband. My other neighbour also passed and he doesn't want it either :(:(.
I smell a rat since I'm on ISDN and the neighbours aren't, but either way I'm stuck with ISDN.
Anyway, I'd like a second ISDN modem for my girlfriends PC which is 56k atm. We have UTViXL so we may as well both have ISDN connections.

Any of you lucky broadbanders like to help out a poor sod restricted to ISDN for life? If your old ISDN modem is headed for the bin, drop me an email:
    random@eircom.net

I got my modem yesterday. I was up and installed in about 10 minutes. I had to ring for my username/password though.

I had to ring up support twice. Once to get username/password and the other time to check up on the web.

Apprantly some people are experiencing slow downs on web access (they gave me a temp proxy server address to use until fixed).

Otherwise it works great! I am also very happy with the support, first time I had a support person who didn't treat me like an idiot. :) Sales people also friendly and patient (for all the times I rang up :D).

.. All the times I rang they told me that they were waiting for eircom to get moving on my request. I suspect they sent the modem in advance as the support guy said it was odd that I was able to connect before I got my activation code.

I've just plugged mine in now, the download speeds are so bad I must be doing something wrong.

The highest download speed I get is about 1.4KB/sec. The speed goes to 0KB/s for a few seconds before spiking to 1.4 again every so often.

This is one of the files I've tried to download, http://www.netsource.ie/bigfile.zip , but all files seem to be the same.

    Pings are like this:
    C:\>ping www.boards.ie

I'll contact tech support to see if they can help out.

Is the double-port ADSL micro-filter necessary for the phoneline going into the modem, Even if I don't have a phone to plug into it?

Whilst things aren't quite as bad as you're situation appears to be, the service seems to have been fairly choppy over the last couple of days. Last night it was like a 56k connection for me, if not worst. My pings are very similar to yours, though i'm getting a steady 4kbps (::gasp::) downloading that file you linked to.

I'm putting it down to the fact that it seems a lot of people got switched on in the last day or two. Hopefully it'll get better.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,353 ✭✭✭radiospan

OK, I'm on the Douglas exchange, BTW.

Downloading files from Kazaa is going at 30-40KB/sec, provided there are enough sources for the file. Everything else stuck at under 3-4Kb/sec.
