Its not a sci fi it not a western, its a good mix

I've enjoyed the ex buffy man new creation on SCI-FI channel and look forward to the series

The development of the characters has been good; leaving the genius girl out to the cold (i.e. not showing special abilities) was clever

Camera work can be annoying but mainly thrilling

Violence is like soprano based. It’s edgy, brutal and quick.

This show rocks and has potential to become classic soon

Can't help compare some elements to Blake 7 though.

    ;) ;)

    I think it's pretty good.

Too bad it got cancelled already though.

Can someone explain to me why decent shows get axed, and ****e like Andromeda stays on the air?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 863 ✭✭✭Lawdie

Ah crap its cancelled?! Did not pick up that information
    It really had potential

Jesus sci fi is left with poxy enterprise and dire andromanda
    Who is funding this rubbish

Its official current TV in all parts of the plant are devoid of a decent new sci fi show now.

I'm actually lost for words and cant curse on the boards so I'm shutting up

    HELL
    HELL
    HELL

People watched Andromeda, they didn't watch Firefly. I know, makes no sense to me either, although Ihave yet to see any Firefly. Hopefully Sky will get it on the cheap or sommit.

Yea, saw it ages ago, I cringed so much when i found out it had been cancelled, i really liked that show.

Did it get more than one season?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,304 ✭✭✭✭koneko

It didn't even get one full season. They'd filmed 2 more episodes but FOX won't show them. They're doing a DVD set though with all the episodes including those missing ones. Will have lots of extras aswell.

I heard some rumours of a Firefly movie but no production has started on it yet and as far as I know the guy that plays Mal has signed up to do a different show so who knows what will happen next.

They've offered the show to a few other stations like UPN (who adopted Buffy after they left aswell) but no one's buying so it's not looking good.

p.s. I'd like to state again for the record that Andromeda is awful.

Farscape got its chance. Sci-Fi put a load of money into it and the ratings continued to fall. It was way too expensive to produce in return for the small number of viewers they got. I guess the problem is that:
    i) It alienated people because it was S4 and there was too much back story to get to grips with
ii) People are morons and didn't recognise it for what it is.

So Sci-Fi can't be blamed for it so much as the failure of people to watch it.
On the other hand, they picked up Stargate:SG-1 to run alongside it. SG-1 did far better than they expected so they've commissioned S7 and are very happy with the results currently. I actually like both shows and SG-1 is now the last good sci-fi show still running. Other than we've only got Mutant X, Andromeda, and Enterprise :(

The way SCI-FI advertise the program here makes you think its going to run forever!

What sucked as well about cancelling season 4 of farscape was it was really just a lead-up to season 5. Ended on a really crap note as a result. Never got to watch Firefly but if it's from Josh Whedon it must be good. Was afraid to watch it after hearing it got cancelled in case I got hooked on it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,304 ✭✭✭✭koneko

Cool, the Sci Fi airing schedule (they're showing the previously unaired episodes!):

Monday 21st July at 9pm Ep 12 - Trash (World TV Premiere)
Monday 28th July at 9pm Ep 13 - The Message (World TV Premiere)
Monday 4th Aug at 9pm Ep 14 - Heart Of Gold (World TV Premiere)
Monday 11th Aug at 9pm Ep 15 - Objects Of Space (UK TV Premiere - Series Finale)

After watching what every one tells me is the final ep of Firefly I can only think of the Kurgan from Highlander :-
"Its better to burn out than to fade away"

If theres a way to protest its stop watching the other muck. Dont even try to see if it will get better (ref andr, ST Ent etc.)

This was a good series with some BALLS no fairy dust just BALLS.

Sorry Josh theres no justice left in TV anymore.

If they were ever going to remake Blake 7 this would be a close copy of what I'd expect.

Are you guys sure that this in the end?

I had the R1 box set with 4 unaired episodes in my hands last Friday. I decided not to buy it as it was 50 dollars and I have yet to see an episode. Is it any good? Should I buy?

In the U.S. Sci-Fi channel fecked Farscape about. I was there when season 4 was airing - about 2/3s of the way through the season there was an announcement as the end credits rolled on an episode that the remainder of the season would be aired the following year. There was a 3/4 month delay before they picked it up again - BBC aired the season finale in the UK before Sci-Fi had resumed the series in the U.S.

They certainly didn't go out of their way to embrace Farscape like they did with other shows. Using "Steven Spielberg's Taken" as an example - they were promoting it at every opportunity for a month before it aired with adverts during every ad break, the week before it started there was a 'making of' documentary and a 'behind the scenes' look at the series every day. Then one day in early December 2002 the viewers of Sci-Fi were subjected to a day of drivel when they showed the entire series in one day. It was complete dirt - the sci-fi fans hated it and the Coronation Street viewer types loved it.

If they had put the same effort into promoting Farscape it may not have been cancelled. Rather than sticking to what the channel was created for they have a tendency to go let's try something that's more "main stream" and end up murdering the quality sci-fi shows they have.

Really? I had heard they promoted the return of Farscape and that the ratings, when it came back, were lower than ever. That they tried but the numbers couldn't offset its costs.

Now I know they'd promote "Taken" to hell or, for example, the Dune movies (and, I assume, the new "Battlestar Galactica") but I got the impression Farscape got its share. Whatever happened, how bloody frustrating is it that it got cancelled with just one year needed to tell its story?!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,109 ✭✭✭sutty

ehh.... what gave people the idea that farscape wasn't doing well? They axed it due to high production costs. They wheren't even going to do S4. But decided to. Then on the last day of shooting S4 they got the word that the show was droped. The Show farscape won a fair few awards and was infact going strong. As soon as people found out it was droped there was a HUGE protest about it. People where sending in so many mails (snail and e-mail) that Sci-Fi where having problems with their services. People where even sending in money to fund the next Season!

As for Firefly. I had to download the eps as I dont have Sci-fi. I thought they where great and the show was never given the chance it needed. Not enough promotion in stuff or the fact that it didn't make it past the first 15 or 16 eps means that other channels wont pick it up as there is no point. Its not like they are going to be able to do a S2 of even finish 1 at this stage. All the actors would be under new contracts. The show as axed at the start of last year or something!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,085 ✭✭✭✭Stark

They wheren't even going to do S4
That's not true. The producers of Farscape were given a contract to do Seasons 4 & 5. Then ratings started dropping in Season 4, as the story got more convoluted while the producers were adding in groundwork for the 5th season. Eventually when it came round to it, the Sci-fi channel said they wouldn't give the Henson company all the money they needed to film Season 5. The show wasn't officially cancelled, the contract still stood and the sets weren't destroyed. The henson company offered to do a 13-episode season 5, at cost to themselves but that deal was refused too.

They were ****ed about to begin with anyway, they always got **** air times, their time slots were ****ed about, episodes aired out of order. I only came across 5 minutes of it accidentally in the 3rd season (enough to get me hooked). It was only after they proved themselves in season 3 that they were given decent treatment, but by then the backstory had become amazingly complex so it was practically impossible for newbies to get into season 4. I didn't think season 4 was that great myself, was too busy trying to please everyone, they even duplicated a lot of back story *yawn*.

Hmmmmm....... just watching the rerun of the last buffy on sky right now. Man I am slow on the upkeep.... The preacher in the last few eps was the guy who plays Malcom in firefly... strange that I never noticed that.

  • Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 18,004 Mod ✭✭✭✭ixoy

A load of hammy, badly acted ****?

Is this a statement or a question.

I would class in a close second to Farscape and way above the other mush that hits the screen.

  • Users Awaiting Email Confirmation Posts: 15,001 ✭✭✭✭Pepe LeFrits

    I was referring to Farscape.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,085 ✭✭✭✭Stark

Farscape rocks and I've been dying to see Firefly because Josh Whedon knows how to produce the goods. Couldn't see much hope for Firefly though only being shown on the Sci-fi channel. (who watches that channel). If it was shown on a terrestrial channel or Sky One or something, it probably would have been big. Sky One may show some amount of crap, but at least it gets viewing. Imagine how well a good show would do on Sky One.

All of Firefly is out on DVD in the US in one boxset, in case anyone missed that snippet of info (Darko mentioned it):

CA$70 (approx €40) for the R1 version. Not bad. Does www.playusa.com give free delivery to Ireland?

    Amazon.com have it for $35 (€27) + delivery.

Due for Region 2 release, 19th of April.

Not getting the dvds myself because I've never seen the tv show so don't know what it's like, but if am going to be on the lookout for anyone I know who has the dvds so I can watch it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 208 ✭✭Fence

Bringing a dead thread back to life :)

Just finished watching the series, got the dvd a while back, and was most impressed. But very annoyed at the same time. How did this get cancelled?

Can't wait for the film, hopefully it'll tie up some of the loose ends.

I would go on and on about how this got cancelled while Andromeda and Mutant X seem to have endless appeal, but they were recently cancelled. No great loss.

Just ordered the DVD myself now, as I have the first 6 episodes here on the PC, and I was honestly blown away by the show. There's some fantastic detail in there, it's a very imaginative show altogether, despite the fact that I find some of the more 'Western' aspects kind of forced. But I soon got used to that, and the whole world of Firefly started to blend together very well altogether. One little detail that I absolutely loved was the fact that for the spacial shots, we never actually heard any 'space ship' sounds at all, which I don't think I can remember seeing in any other sci-fi at all. Brilliance.

    Just FYI:

The Mini-Series 'Farscape - The Peacekeeper Wars' airs on SciFi-US in October.

Oh and Andromeda has one more season left (5) btw on SciFi.

You should have put that announcement in a new thread.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,130 ✭✭✭✭Karl Hungus

I really have to post again, as this is such an awesome show altogether!

My DVD boxset arrived on Thursday, and I watched it all (Including the extras) that very day.

But ****ing hell, talk about missed potential altogether! It does really bug me that the show was cancelled with so many plot threads up in the air, such as
what went on with River, and those mysterious men in blue gloves, and what exactly is the deal with Shepard Book? It was certainly eluded to that there was a hell of a lot more to him that meets the eye, yet at the same time, he seems a very decent guy.
Though I'm certainly glad that there's a movie in production now, and according to an interview with Alan Tudyk (Wash) in SFX, it should clear up a lot about aforementioned unresolved plot threads, and apparently we'll finally see those canabalistic Reavers in the flesh!

Speaking of which, did anyone else think that the Reavers were built up quite masterfully altogether? That scene in the pilot where the crew had to stay their course while passing a reaver ship, because as Mal puts it, if we flee, they'll chase. Honestly, that whole sequence was one of the most tense things I've seen in quite a while!

I'm seriously in awe of how much I'm enjoying Firefly altogether, especially with it being a Joss Whedon creation. And as you gathered from that sentence, I wasn't particularly a fan of Mr. Whedon at all prior to this. In fact, while there was some of Buffy that I enjoyed at parts, I'd certainly say on the whole I disliked it, especially annoying characters like Xander and Cordelia (Not to mention many, many others), some downright terrible dialogue, and whole series plots at times (Glory was just plain bad). And Angel wasn't much better. But with that in mind, I simply cannot find any major faults with Firefly whatsoever! The characters are just so well written altogether, and the dialogue is certainly far superior to anything Whedon has done before, not to mention some of the snappiest one-liners there are; Such as when
Niska captured and tortured Mal and Wash, and Zoe goes to buy back their freedom, but only gets Wash and Mal's ear as chance. Then when she gets back and reveals the ear, saying don't worry, we'll get him back, and Jayne goes "What are we gonna do, CLONE HIM!?" :D
Or "A Ship like this would be with you untill the day you die." "That's because it's a deathtrap!"

I also can't mention enough just how great the characters are. Kaylee is quite refreshing altogether simply because of the fact that she's a mechanic, yet there's no sickeningly clichéd feminist spoutings. Jayne aswell, despite being such a one-liner machine not seen since Bruce Campbell in Army Of Darkness, he's got far more depth than that altogether, like
where he turned in Simon and River to the Alliance, that whole episode revealed a far more complex character altogether with very interesting motives altogether, and I actually didn't expect him to betray them at all, oddly enough.

    Just an amazing series altogether.
And did anyone else think that the episode 'Out Of Gas' was near cinematic perfection!?

Yup, best show ever in my opinion. I like sci-fi books, but think most tv shows are rubbish and I thought this was just another, so I ignored it til I just happened to see ten minutes of it one day and realised it was something much different - no stupid humanoid aliens with knobbly heads, no sounds in space, fantastic characters, great snappy scripts that can be hilariously funny at times, proper adult relationships, etc. Sure it has some flaws, but overall it's easily the best of them all. I bought the dvd and am totally disgusted that it's been cancelled. There's just no fairness.

Aye, I know what you mean, the fact that there's no aliens whatsoever make it a very refreshing show altogether.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24 smartcard

My frustration that this show was cancelled is indescribable. I hope against hope that something new springs from the movie. I've heard rumours that they may make a trilogy, but apparently a trilogy movie deal means there definately won't be more tv episodes. But does that mean if there was only one movie and it did well they might start shooting the show again?? It's killin me!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,130 ✭✭✭✭Karl Hungus

As far as I know it's definetly a 3-movie deal, but the bad news is that apparently Fox put some kind of clause in the contract that they couldn't reprise the series for another 5 years. :/

I can probably try find out more details on that, but don't expect the series to be ressurected too soon.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24 smartcard

Damn it straight t'hell, although 3 movies is better than... well, better than 1.
I think I'll keep my eye on the Universal website over the next few months.
    Thanks for the update Hungus.

I got the DVD box set recently and cannot believe that a series of this quality got cancelled after only one series. Bizarre.

The title of the movie is going to be Serenity btw.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,763 ✭✭✭Fenster

Well TV executives have a tendency to cancel great shows and leave tripe like Andromeda and Mutant-X running. Odyssey 5, B5: Crusade, Firefly all got cancelled by them.

Betcha the BSG series will recieve rave reviews and get canned after the first season. :p

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,130 ✭✭✭✭Karl Hungus

It didn't get cancelled after 1 series, it got cancelled before they even had a chance to finish 1 series. And to add insult to injury, crap like Enterprise and Andromeda just keep going! WHY!?

Thankfully it seems that shows CAN be successfully ressurrected by fans and on the back of good DVD sales, what with Family Guy starting a new series, Farscape getting the new miniseries, and of course, the firefly trilogy!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24 smartcard

Anyone remember Earth 2? Got cancelled after one season and Sliders kept going. Travesty. :(

  • Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 18,004 Mod ✭✭✭✭ixoy

It is a sickening insult Enterprise was let continue in a world where Firefly got screwed over, despite the light years between them in every department. If I start thinking about all the great shows that cancelled prematurely at one season - Nowhere Man, American Gothic, Space: Above & Beyond, Dark Skies - I'll start getting very very angry. Ah crap too late :o

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,130 ✭✭✭✭Karl Hungus

I thought Nowhere Man was fairly mediocre tbh, seemed to be just a cash in on The Fugitive as far as I recall.

But yeah, I agree with you, everything good, especially good Sci-Fi, has been cancelled. But with that in mind, it just boggles my mind just to think WHO is keeping crap like Relic Hunter, Mutant X, Andromeda, and so much other rubbish on the screen? Honest, who watches that crap!?
