those 2 films rock. try pickin up a few episodes of Cowboy Bebop or TriGun (ive got both dvd box sets :D) and definately get Princess Mononoke

If youre looking for ones available over here, the best I can advise is Macross Plus. Although all Ghibli movies are worth seeing.

Princess Mononoke, Blood the Last Vampire, Macross Plus, Evangelion and Nadesico are all available on DVD over here, and they all rock.

Can't remember what else is out on R2 DVD, there's some good stuff though. However for the most part you're down to importing R1 DVDs for good anime... Pick up the Escaflowne movie if you can at all, it's one of the best anime movies of recent years by far. I also second that Cowboy Bebop recomendation, it rocks hard.

i just ordered the cowboy bebop movie (knockin on heaven's door). is it out yet? im ordering it from amazon.com...just curious cuz im not sure if i pre-ordered it or actually ordered it

If anyone is interested Sci-fi show an anime movie every thursday night, well friday morning to be exact, around 1.30 am or so. If i get a chance i'll watch them, they had ghost in the shell on about three weeks back.

On a side note Ring 2 is on either tonight or tomorrow night on sci-fi channel. Ring 1 was on last week

Ninja scroll and Princess Mononoke are pretty good

Was I the only one not to find Ghost in the Shell all that incredible? I saw it years ago, when it was first released over here, and turned it off half way through. Then I was given the DVD a little while ago.. this time managed to sit all the way through it, but kinda regret I did now.

Don't get me wrong, I can see all the wonderful technical accomplishments in there, but from the point of view of story, I just wasn't feeling it. And the end came so suddenly, I had to ask an anime-obsessed friend if it was a two-part film.

    Must be just me.

Yeah it's out. Well at least play has it in stock.

For recomendations. I liked Patlabor, although it seems a fair few people dont.
Perfect Blue is pretty good too, worth checking out.

Regarding GiTS, I still havent seen it all. I've sat down to watch 4 or 5 times and always end up falling asleep. It's not bad and I usually do enjoy the bits I see but I cant help falling asleep.
As for it being a two part film, apparently GiTS 2 is being made at the moment. There's also a series Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex. Considering it's stand alone though I doubt it has all that much to do with the film. Havent seen any of it myself.

"spirited away" is a great anime film, as is "jin roh" , "escaflowne - girl in gaia" .

I prefer anime series rather than movies though, trigun, cowboy bebop, berserk, .hack//sign, FLCL, scryed...

you can get em cheap enough in region 1, box sets and the like.

www.ezydvd.com.au have a good selection of cheap dvds, and they have speedy enough delivery.

    Urotsukidoji,legend of the overfiend

heh.heh.heh. stay away from this glorified hentai :)

i wasn't crazy about ninja scroll or blood: the last vampire either, they had pretty enough animation but the story was lacking and the characters were just...dead.

i've only seen the ghost in the shell dub, so that naturally ruined the film for me.. i've holding out on rating it until I can see the subbed version.

perfect blue was great.. if a bit of a head trip :)

Forbidden planet have FIST OF THE NORTH STAR-wow what a manga.
Another one golgo 13 Quality films.
    Crying freeman
    Wicked city
You can't go wrong with any of these ones, they are all brilliant!:D :D:D

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 23,556 ✭✭✭✭Sir Digby Chicken Caesar

I have golgo 13 on dvd but for some reason (go manga entertainment, go!) it's a dub only.. with no jap audio track or english sub. the dub is just.. horrible.. so I haven't been able to bring myself to watch it yet.

    is it really worth it?

another decent enough movie is shadow skill .. and of course a great newish anime movie is "metropolis".. it's farkin amazing

i would recomend everyone to get ghost in the shell, the matrix ows soooo much to that film. Akira is class, its hard to believe it was made in 1987, but i think its falls apart at the end. ive got the animatrix, it got me started but id been lookin for anime for ages

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,454 ✭✭✭weemcd

I remember when I saw that.
Me and a friend were about 10 or so, and the shop had got in a load of manga films. They actually sold it to us at the time, because it was a 'Cartoon'! Basically, when it came to yer wan being raped by yer man's giant tongue with the eyeball on it... ...I can still see it rather vividly. ****ing shocked at the time I was!!!

Ninja Scroll would be one of my favourites but I'm partial to the gore and "coolness" of it. Evangelion is a brilliant series but the last few episodes are like an acid trip or as I like to put it a "head ****". The film is great though.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,322 ✭✭✭Repli

Ghost in the shell is brilliant!
The series is good too.. It's my favourite anime.. then Akira, Ranma 1/2 (series) and My name is Dokgo Tak..

I'd have to agree with you there... have a few anime on DVD and "ghost in the shell" is down as my worst buy... Just didn't enjoy it, if anyone wants to give me a tenner & postage they're more than welcome to it!

It's pretty decent though, don't get me wrong :)

I liked Ninja Scrolls & Wicked City, although I was never totally convinced on Golgo 13.

I think Patlabor is great. Has a really godo story line in both DVDs. Even my mum commented on that aspect!

I also like Appleseed, although it's rather cut down & condensed from the graphic novels :(

I love Akira and Ghost in the Shell, they got me into anime.

As for recommendations, Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, Evangelion, FLCL, and Nightwalker are some series I'd recommend. As for movies, Macross Plus (technically an OAV), Blood the Last Vampire, Princess Mononoke and Graveyard of the Fireflies. If you're more into the action side of things then Ninja Scroll or Street Fighter 2.

Just a warning about Evangelion, It'll cost you quite a pretty penny to see it all, the original series is spread between 8 dvds and then there's Evangelion: Death & Rebirth and The end of evangelion, which have the real ending. That must have totalled about €250 for me.
Head **** is indeed the right description. Philosophical Action-Adventure? Comedy Drama about the nature of mankind and evolution? I don't know. It certainly is one of the most gripping series I have ever seen, I watched all 26 eps of the series in the first sitting.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 23,556 ✭✭✭✭Sir Digby Chicken Caesar

you can get evangelion on region 1 dvd for about $100 for the "perfect" box set, then prob another $30 or less for the movie

I bought patlabor 1+2 today, just after watching 1 now.. it was pretty cool. not an awful lot of uber-cute girls though :P ah well
/me sticks on love hina and sighs in content

They are all 25 eps spread across 3 discs, say there naughty versions? if so i have to say the packaging and quailty is fubbin excellent

rasta, your mate has HK dvds.. bootlegs. the quality of the subbing, video/audio and packaging can varey alot with HK dvds. but they are a cheap way of getting your hands on anime (if ..illegal)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,503 ✭✭✭Makaveli

    Cowboy Bebop has 26 episodes.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,275 ✭✭✭Shinji

There's also a series Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex. Considering it's stand alone though I doubt it has all that much to do with the film.

"Stand Alone Complex" doesn't refer to it being a standalone story - it's a reference to a phrase in the Ghost in the Shell universe, where a "Stand Alone Complex" is a ghost and a shell, basically an entity that has both the things needed to function seperately from anything else.

The TV series is much closer in tone to the original manga, while the movie is very abrupt and quite dark and humourless, much like the rest of Mamoru Oshii's films. I'd personally rate the TV series as one of the best anime series ever made, while the movie is actually pretty dull, in my opinion.

Does anyone know of an anime film with a character that looks like Caleb from the game Blood 2:

    caleb_d.gif

I remember seeing a clip of it on "The Big Breakfast" about ten years ago but can't remember what it was called.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,503 ✭✭✭Makaveli

    Hellsing?
    Looks kind of like Alucard.

[edit]Just noticed you said film, so it couldnt be Hellsing. Here's a pic anyway.

Well it could have been a series released on video I suppose. It was one of those short clips they used to show before and after every ad break. But it can't be Hellsing or Vampire Hunter D because they came out in the last few years and I saw the clip about 10 years ago.

    has anyone ordered from www.animediscount.net??
they seem to have alot of good region zero dvds for very cheap -
the entire neon evangelis series with movies for $40 -
its 150 odd sterling on amazon without the movies..
and all 26 episodes of cowboy bebop for $30.
it sounds a little too good to be true :/

and has anyone seen noir?any good?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,275 ✭✭✭Shinji

it sounds a little too good to be true :/

It is. They're all low quality pirate rips, mostly ripped off television broadcasts so you're basically getting VHS quality and REALLY dodgy subtitling. Avoid like the plague.

Noir is excellent - superb music and action scenes, and it's got a couple of really good thought-provoking episodes. Some people think it loses pace when the overall plot arc kicks in later on, but I've enjoyed all of it that I've seen.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 23,556 ✭✭✭✭Sir Digby Chicken Caesar

i didn't like Noir at all until the last few episodes, it was slow and boring, it took ages to get to any sort of plot. all the "character development" could have been done alot better in a lot less time, the music and animation was superb though..

as for the bootleg dvds, sometimes the quality is bad. sometimes it's good. alot of people seem to think of pirating anime as different from pirating say hollywood movies or american tv series for some reason. it is illegal, it is piracy but it is very cheap :) you can pick up region 1 dvds for fairly cheap however, and it's worth buying the official ones. if only for the cuddly warm feeling you get when you hold them.

alot of people seem to think of pirating anime as different from pirating say hollywood movies or american tv series for some reason.

I think a lot of that is because the companies releasing anime, for the most part, are still very small fan-run operations, rather than EvilGlobalMegaCorporation type companies.

You can get Evangelion at cdwow.ie for a very reasonable price.
The 8 disc boxset for €85.95. Region 2.

    http://www1.cdwow.ie/detail_results_2.php?product_code=4253

And you can get The End Of Evangelion DVD for €15.95. Region 4 however.

    http://www1.cdwow.ie/detail_results_2.php?product_code=3446

They used to have the Death and Rebirth too, but I cant find it now.

Alternativley you could order from the Hong Kong site. Still free delivery and still legitimate dvds.
    Dont have the boxset though.

    http://www2.cd-wow.com.hk/searchresults.php?searchfield=evangelion

    HK$110.95 = ~ €12.50

All cdwow orders are shipped from Hong Kong anyway.

can you actually *buy* official anime vcd's?
not fansubs like, but official vcd releases.. if you don't feel like paying a couple of hundred for a dvd set and are only interested in viewing it once or twice..

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,263 ✭✭✭Caesar_Bojangle

Just out of curiosity how many of you would actually admit to your friends you watch/enjoy anime? I watch it but don't discuss it as a lot of people, in ireland at least, regard it to be as cool as stamp collecting. So i keep my interest very hush-hush for fear of mass mocking at the hands of others. Lets face it the 80's really epitomised it as being the height of nerdom.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,503 ✭✭✭Makaveli

I don't have a problem with people knowing I like it.
Okay, so a lot of them think it's all Pokemon and Digimon. But the only person that has ever slagged me over it is a narrow minded twat, so I couldn't care less about his opinion.

can you actually *buy* official anime vcd's?

Not any more, no. There were a very small number released officially, but 99% of VCDs were HK pirate jobs. Japan never used them - it went direct from VHS to LaserDisc to DVD.
Just out of curiosity how many of you would actually admit to your friends you watch/enjoy anime?

Sure, I would. I'm into a lot of aspects of Japanese culture outside of that as well - I'm learning the language, and have a pretty keen interest in their literature and history.

I'm on the organising committee for the largest annual Japanese cultural event (AyaCon) in the UK, so frankly I'd have a damn hard time trying to hide my hobby even if I wanted to. As it is, sod it - I've got anime posters on my walls, manga on my bookshelves, and giant robot models on my desk in work. I'll worry about growing up some other time :)

    What an odd question...
You know, I've never met anyone who thought that Manga/Anime was in any ways 'Uncool' or something to be ashamed of... And the thought of it being seen that way to just about anyone hasn't really crossed my mind.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 23,556 ✭✭✭✭Sir Digby Chicken Caesar

well i have a few anime tshirts that I wear a fair bit, and I talk about it every now and then so I guess all my friends know I'm into it.
i don't see it as being anything to be er.. ashamed? of, it's bloody great :)

I get some slaggings about liking anime but there's one way of stopping it. Sit the people down to watch GitS and they will have to take back what they said.

Anyone know where you can get decent anime t-shirts.

My 3 favourite animes are Evangelion, Wings of Honneamise and Akira.

Has anyone else seen Wings of Honneamise or am i the only one? If so what did you think of it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 875 ✭✭✭EvilGeorge

Love anime, still haven't seen Evangelion yet though, but my mate will be back from Japan in setp. and being japanese + he has being collecting for a long time means I may be in for a treat!!

    for anime t-shirts, try
    http://www.japanimation.com/

I got a bebop, eva and kenshin shirt from there a while ago, not too dear and they came quick.

I've not seen wings of honne..bleh yet, but I've heard it's great

It's not your usual anime it's far slower and don't expect half naked schoolgirls and giant robots. I'm not saying half naked schoolgirls and giant robots don't have their merits :D

i got a patlabour 2 disc set in a class wee comic shop in galway, if your ever there drop in and buy somethin for a few quid, the guy who owns it is a sound fella. i'm not ashamed about anime, i'm gettin my friends into it, im even contemplating buying a t-shirt!!!!, the only problem is whean dick-for brains call in pokemon, if they watched one, they'd realise the stories are more complicated than normal films. Me thinks there shoud be an anime section on boards! agreed?

well cloud runs another forum site called www.mangatoanime.com
