Netsource Slow

    Just run something by everyone...

I got knocked off on sat night 11pm and i only got "fixed" at monday lunchtime. I was not getting any traffic in out out of my router but it miraculously came back 2 hours ago (after a phone call) and as yet i have no reason given to me for the outage!!

However it seems very slow averaging around 32K/s whereby i was getting 55 K/s before.

I know this maybe down to the warez monkeys but it is unusual to have such bad bandwidth during the day!! I thought most of them are vampires i.e. sleep by day, download at night!!

Or, could it be that eircon aand co. moved me onto a crappy circuit?

    Any ideas...

    Dwayne

Are you sure its not the server you are downloading from? About 2 weeks ago I was getting only about 20k/sec from a server and though it was a problem with my connection but actually the server had been set to allow a max speed of 20k per user. Then again it could just be somebody leeching a few "linux iso's"

    JohnK

I appreciate what your sayin John , but i normally gauge my bandwidth through 4/5 different BB speed testers. I know they are not very accuarate but they do give a general idea.

Anyway probably jumping the gun, it think i will just make myself a cuppa and try agin later probably right about the ISO monkeys!!

No point in getting upset now..

I personally dont put much faith in those tests since I tried one that told me I was on a 5mb line then 30 seconds later told me it was a 28k dial-up then later still a 1 mb line. Wouldn't mind but I only have 512k :p

theres so many NETSOURCE IS SLOW THREADS that theres no point in posting it again and again and again, theres nothing you can do until netsource sorts itself out, read the other posts first unless theres something new that you have to add

    Regards

If you want to test your speeds then don't test them through "broadband testers". Download from IE or UK servers you can rely on.

That's just a sub-exchange afaik, and the DSLAMS would be located in the centres of the networks to get the most clients into the one group.

Also, only the Mervue and Shantalla exchanges are enabled.

Yes ! Netsource seem to have died yet again ! I'm in hankill.

    Testing at http://www.irishbroadband.ie/speedtest/speedtest.html

    I am getting:

The test page loaded in 47.879 seconds, indicating a throughput of 81777bps.

    and pings > 280ms !!

How long is this going to continue I wonder ?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,368 ✭✭✭-ADREN-

its only slow for some people mine rarely drops under 50kB/sec and i downloaded 16GB in 1 week

Just wondering what the HELL.. exactly did you download in one week that ran over 16gbs :/... infairness..

I'm getting an average 7.5KBps download..... lovely, and my pings, well their f*cked as usual. I've sent plenty of emails complaining, and I rang them today, they told me to send emails of tracerts and pings, which I've done before iswell and it got me nowhere. They *kinda hinted to me that they may be getting more bandwidth as their customer DSL base is rapidaly expanding every day, dunno how true it is but

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 2,563 ✭✭✭Tazzle

that's really poor i dunno how u put up with it ando, that state of affair is well beyond the acceptable use, you can quote the sale of goods and supply of services act 1980, not of merchantable quality and get out out of the contract that way.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,481 ✭✭✭satchmo

Well there's a difference between not being guaranteed 512k all of the time and never getting even 256k any of the time...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 228 ✭✭MrB

especially when the problem is nothing to do with the distance to your exchange or the quality of your line!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,817 ✭✭✭✭po0k

    download something off of ftp.heanet.ie
if you get a poor speed it's your connection, not your source.

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 2,563 ✭✭✭Tazzle

it doesnt matter what is in the contract that law overrules it, that product is clearly not of a merchantable standard, he has rights

last night I was getting 7kBps from a good server. This morning before work (round 9am) I was getting 52KB from the same server and pings of 30 to the Uk. Its the contention on my exchange that is the problem, but I rarely use the connection at quite times

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 2,563 ✭✭✭Tazzle

Let's hope they do actually double their bandwidth so.

    yeh i hope so too

Well they doubled their bandwidth a while back and it didn't help, whose to say this is going to make any difference?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,441 ✭✭✭ando

as far as I know they started with a 2meg line, then that went upto a 6meg line. That 6 meg lasted only a few days and now their going upto a 12mbps line I guess?

Is that all they got for all the users?

They TRIPLED the bandwidth and it made a huge difference, but now that there's more and more users coming into the system it's gotten steadily worse. A further doubling is going to take place which will put the system at 6 times its original capacity which sounds fair enough to me.

I understand the frustration, but when we've already received notification that they're working on the problem, there's no point in going on and on and on about it. Netsource is a fledgeling organisation trying to offer a service despite the best efforts of Eircom to disrupt them. There are always going to be teething problems.

Some of you people seem to just like whinging a lot.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 413 ✭✭Skittle

I don't know about whinging but on another Boards thread someone stated that Esat & UTV bought bandwidth from Eircom in 45 Mbit chunks. NetSource on the other hand seems to have bought bandwidth in 2 Mbit chunks which has now been shown as rediculous short sightedness. Even increasing the bandwidth to 12Mbit will only satisfy people for a short while, sure 6Mbit only lasted for about a week, the last time they [NetSource] upgraded the bandwidth....

NetSource need to learn from their msitakes before most of their customers 2 month inital contract period is up...

Bandwidth doesn't grow on trees and I doubt eircom are the charitable sort. You need plenty of cash before splashing out on that much bandwidth.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,368 ✭✭✭-ADREN-

soooo Utv if they ahve 45mbs allready.. that means if I get my broad band now.. it should be lovely and sweet 52k dloads and 40 pings.. shouldnt be like netsource at all??

Good then should I order it now? The quality will be good yea yea?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,502 ✭✭✭MrPinK

Also it seems Netsource bought their handover bandwidth from Eircom in 2MB increments, while UTV have hinted that they buy it in 45MB increments (probably the same for Esat) and I wouldn't be suprised to hear that Eircom buy it in 155MB increments.

That's were the figure came from. Doesn't seem too definite to me, but with a 5 Gig capped service the pings shouldn't be a problem. They are fine for eircom and esat the utv product it pretty much identical to them. I don't understand why ppl got so excited about it.

    a new low:

I'm cancelling this pile of $hite as soon as I get the chance

Something seriously wrong with your connection alright, I'd be pretty pissed too. This is what I'm d/l from netsource at right now

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,037 ✭✭✭BArra

seems the netsource representitives have disappeared here on boards on the ns threads

ando u seem to be getting an awful service, if i were u get eircom radsl after ur contract runs up, it'll suit you perfect for gaming, 30pings in cs easy

Here's DU Meter running on my Netsource connection from Portobello

ando, do you even connect at the full 512k?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,441 ✭✭✭ando

its gotta be contention on my exchange, if most of you are getting higher speeds at the same time. I do however get full speeds at really quite times and 30ms pings. Its off to eircom I go once this last month's contract is finished, cause I aint taking any chances with a 12 month contract !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,817 ✭✭✭✭po0k

What ye seem to be foregtting is that this is an uncapped service.
Hence it drags in the leechers and warez monkeys like flies to shite.

We're getting it for our house simply cos we need the connectivity.
Also means I can IRC and check mail from my bed.
One of my life-long ambitions is about to be realised :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,502 ✭✭✭MrPinK

IRC and mail checking, gotta have broadband for that :)

Why can't you do it from bed with dail-up? Not that I'm recommending anyone stays with 56k, bb is unreal.

Hi, I posted about the bandwidth amounts, just to make it clear that I don't know the figures for fact, I'm just extrapolating from various other posts on boards.

It is widely known that Eircom sell the handover pipes in either 2MB, 45MB or 155MB increments. Malcolm from UTV posted that 45MB pipes was the optimum increments to buy the bandwidth in. Now he didn't say that was what UTV buy it in, but it seems very likely.

The thing is in order to do this you need to have a lot of money up front as these pipes aren't cheap. It would seem to me that Eircom, Esat and UTV would have the available finance up front, due to their parent companies.

Netsource on the other hand seem to be coming at it from the approach of waiting until they get loads of customers, who are then badly contented and then double their bandwidth.

Netsources approach seems to be reactive rather then proactive.

I think I got full speed once, it was the day they went from 2mb -> 6mb. I've never had a ping below 90, and in the last week I've not had a ping below 300. :(

    What exchange are you on?
I'm thinking of not signing up with any of the Cappers as a matter of principle, but this thread is only giving a sketchy picture of whats going on with netsource.

What sort of download speeds do u get?
Did you ring netsource and what did they say?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 935 ✭✭✭Mixie

They say im on the Clontarf exchange but a friend seems to think we're on a different exchange altogether.

Downloading at the moment at 21kB/sec - gave up on trying to game since my pings within the last half hour to UK servers were all 350+

Rang them about it twice now, both times I was told that they were working on it and would be increasing their connection as soon as possible.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 161 ✭✭Detonated Sauce

Hmm mixie I'm also downloading at 21kb/sec and my pings are terrible, I'm on the blanchardstown exchange though

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 287 ✭✭d0gb0y

I signed up with them 2 weeks ago & I haven't seen a good ping yet. Its disappointing as I had wireless before & it was quicker at downloading & pings weren't always bad(when it rains). I think i'll have to go with east :(
