Over-rated films?

    The Boondock saints ... shi$te
    Donnie Darko .... sh$te

I saw these 2 films after people telling me they were fantastic.
    I thought they were crap.
Its like being back in college sometimes. People say a film is cool because its trendy to say that.

Anyone else seen films they thought were over rated by friends, not critics

DaithiSurfer = muppet - your an over rated muppet at that

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,719 ✭✭✭Bacchus

It's all a matter of taste really. You hated Donnie Darko, I loved it. I think American Beauty is over-rated but most my friends thought it was the best thing since sliced bread.
The films I feel are over-rated are:
About Schmidt - I liked it, but didn't think it was fantastic!!
DareDevil - Ben Affleck has the personality of a plank.
The Austin Powers Sequels - All just re-hashes of the first one
    X-Men - the plot is ****e
X-Men2 - Once we get over the special effects, we'll see that the plot was once again ****e (although it was better than X-Men1)

Definitely this one is all about taste:

    Matrix Reloaded

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,016 ✭✭✭✭vibe666

Titanic would have to be at the top of my most overrated movie list.

    sloppy mush.

#And predictable at that. they should have had it fly off into space or something, just to surprise people. ;)

Agreed and now for something completely different:

Both Star Wars prequels .... so dissappointing

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,016 ✭✭✭✭vibe666

Ditto, someone should have taken all deoge lucas's money waway before he started to make them.

maybe we'd have ended up with decent plots and some more inventive film making instead of a showcase for ILM, with no real plot or genuine exitement.

Although I've waited a long time to see Yoda kick some ass, but that was about it.

    Donnie Darko .... sh$te

Have to agree with you there. Donnie Darko is woefully boring, not to mention weird.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,016 ✭✭✭✭vibe666

Donnie Darko is one of those movies where I'm still not sure if I liked it or not, but I don't want it to go down in my estimations by watching it again because if I do I know I'll probably think it's $hite.

I like not really knowing. means I don't have to be judgemental.

Sixth sense, what a waste of two hours!

Citizen Kane, innovative and all that yeah, but doesnt deserve
such reverance, it really aint that good

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,016 ✭✭✭✭vibe666

but it was good when it came out!

Orson Welles was a bit of a genius in a lot of ways, but it's like a good Cognac, it's all down to what you like.

I fupping hated Blair Witch. Utter, utter crap. Great maketing though.
    Donnie Darko? Pure class.
I thought Audition was a waste of my time too....

i also have to go with titanic as the most over-rated film , i have'nt
seen donnie darko yet, but i loved the boondock saints and watch it once or twice a month. ( very funny film ).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,016 ✭✭✭✭vibe666

haven't seen boondock saints, so I can't comment, but for anyone that liked it, there is apparently a sequel on the way.

see IMDB (Boondock II) for more info.

Jerry Maguire - The ultimat 'all american' rubbish

Forrest Gump - See above anybody no matter how slow can make the american dream

    Titanic - Just bad

The original Ring film - Boring as a dogs ass

Easy rider - Go nowhere boring film

Man bites dog - European pseudo art house guff

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 418 ✭✭Zaphod B

Loved the original Ring... ditto Boondock Saints...

It's official, Titanic is ovverated and generally a lump of sh!te.
Let's not dignify it with any more comments :P

    The Truman Show.

I know what they trying to do with it, but they did'nt do it
    very well. Too literal.

along the lines of donne darko is ghost dog the way of the samurai.........first time i saw it i wasn't sure what to make of it.............still dont really 'get it' but saw it a few times recently and enjoyed it...........

Jeepers creepers scary not one bit. rubbish :o

Texas Chainsaw Massacre, so boring. I was all ready for it as well, late at night with all the lights off.

    Unbreakable-dont get me started.

Jeepers Creepers and My Little Eye.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 226 ✭✭Ajos

    These will be controversial.

The Shawshank Redemption - incredibly derivative, drowns in it's own quality. Everything about it is of such a high standard that it never comes to life at all. Watch Escape From Alcatraz instead. Now that's a movie.

Blade Runner - Boring. Poorly plotted. Doesn't make sense. Sure, the design is great, but pretty sets and lighting do not a movie make.

I will take personal insults, well, personally. ;)

I have to agree with you on Bladerunner.
I never saw the appeal at all, even tho i'm a huge sci-fi fan

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,183 ✭✭✭Quigs Snr

Rushmore. Decent movie but vastly overated.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,269 ✭✭✭p.pete

I like blade runner but the hype it gets is way out of proportion. Well deserves a mention on this thread.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,084 ✭✭✭✭Stark

I like Donnie Darko and American Beauty.

Agreed with the Austin Powers sequels, rehashed the first one, took all the british charm out of it as well. Plus they ruined the "one million dollars joke". In the first one it was subtly brilliant, in the 2nd one they totally killed it and now it looks **** in the first one as well.

Agreed with Forrest Gump being overrated.
It goes without saying that Titanic was overrated, noone will argue with you on that.

Thought Star Wars episode 4 was a bit overrated, not as good as episodes 5 and 6 at all.

Thought American Pie was well overrated, the only laugh I got out of the whole film was the "band camp" scene, which has been since quoted to death.

That's a dumb statement. Shawshanks quality is so high its bad?
Tis a class film in every respect, prolly the best all rounder I've seen.

    You're right about Clint though.......

My two pet hates for overrated films are Goodfellows & Godfather Trilogy - now dont get me wrong I am not anti-ganster movies at all. I actually though these films were ok - not the masterpieces that people claim.

I thought Goodfellows was very ordinary with nothing that wsa new refreashing or even interesting - the story is very predictable.

The Godfather was a good tale over the entire trilogy but again nothing that made me sit up and say wow - maybe it was different back in the 70's

I'll try and explain what I mean.

Everything about Shawshanks is good, except the movie. It is well directed, well shot, well designed, well edited and well acted, and it's as dull as hell. It is far, far less than the sum of it's parts. It never comes to life at all, it's so rigidly controlled. It's a startling display of professionalism by all concerned, and completely unengaging. Escape From Alcatraz has more emotional depth in Clint's little finger, despite the relatively low budget.

Goodfellas, on the other hand, is the best movie ever made by a human being. Except maybe Seven Samurai.

    Matrix Reloaded.

Got a load of hype, but I have to say that I thought it was a great big pile of poo! It wasnt a scratch on the fist movie. I was very disappointed with it.

Well what did you expect by the matrix sequel it can only be original once..........i thought it was brilliant it went in to the story more without fukking anything up one of the best sequels in a while, i dont think its always possible to make a sequel that is better than the first......at least they didn't fukk up like a host of other sequels do.......if you think it was so bad how do you think they could have done it better?? If they had just brought out another action film without going in to the story any further you'd be here complaining that they just repackaged the first one to make money.........however it is a matter of taste so you have your own opinion of the film.............

your talking through your cake-hole son. The Shawshank Redemption is a fantatic movie well put together well executed, the fact that it wasn't well recevied by the Oscars or at the box Ofiice just goes to fulfil its cult-ness.

I think son, your in the 'cool to bring it down camp' - which as we all know is the least cool camp to be in.

I personally don't own it, I own plenty other stuff on DVD, but I won't buy it coz it was once of the best movie experiences of my life. I don't need to repeat it

    enough said.

    Whereas
    - Donnie Darko was crap(I've sounded off before in another thread about it somewhere)
    - titanic was gutter
    - Star Wars stuff was poopoo(prequels)
    - ET(when I finally saw it the second time)
    - Braveheart(did anybody else think the 'battle' scene's look a tad small?)
    - PHILADELPHIA(could'nt get into it at all!)
    - Traffic(Still like the Channel 4 Original)

Dad? I didn't know you posted here!;)

It's not the worst movie I've ever seen, just horrendously, horrendously overrated. It's like the American version of a Merchant-Ivory movie. And it's not cult - it's way too popular to be cult. If anything I'm in the 'cool to like good movies and not merely mediocre ones' camp. You should try watching Shawshank again sometime. It's... fine.

Fight Club.... If I have said it before I'll say it again Chick Flick.
Everything about Shawshanks is good, except the movie. It is well directed, well shot, well designed, well edited and well acted, and it's as dull as hell.

This is how I feel about Fight Club. Shawshank rocks.

American Psycho .... I just dont like that kid from Land of the Rising sun (I am right about the Title of that film? John Malcovich and Chiristan Bale (annoying English kid) and another over rated Stephen Speilberg movie) and they made a sequel and allowed another adaptation of the authors books call Rules of Attraction which has the bother of the main character in amercan psycho in the lead role played by Dawson Vander Prat. SHUDDER.

ET, AI maybe because I am an adult when i saw both of these

    I enjoyed Minority Report.

Can Donnie Darko be Over rated it was released only on Video over here. Haven't see it but have heard alot of the small arty farty hype. Which sometimes is good.

    This thread is over-rated.

Its just a sorry excuse for people to give out/whinge/whine/moan about films they didnt get or for some crazy reason I dont understand really didnt like.

    Fine, keep it to yourself.

    American Beauty, overrated?

Funny, the oscar community didnt think so.

Donnie Darko is excellent. You thought it was weird and thats why you didnt like it?

Fuking DUH!, its supposed to be a dark/mysterious story.

    Jebus, I hate people.
