    Hi all,

Finally, I got the astronomy calendar for 2019 completed! To be honest I had originally shelved the idea because of some other commitments. However, Christmas was an opportunity get things sorted and I started work on the calendar at the beginning of January. I already had the majority of the data compiled from doing the Whitaker's Almanac solar system notes - it was just a matter of knocking it into the format you see in the calendar.

Rather than sell the calendar as we did in the past for IFAS, the short turnaround has meant it is released free and has also allowed the photos to be themed around the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11 landing on the Moon. I also wanted to "beat the tape" so to speak before next Monday morning's total lunar eclipse :D

Anyway, the link to download it is below (2.8Mb and 28 pages). The second link is a compilation of resources and web sites to supplement the calendar.

Feel free to post up any suggestions or errors spotted. Let me know too if the download links fail to work. Thank you!

    Clear skies!

    John

Many thanks for all the kind words folks. I really appreciate your feedback.

@muskyj ... the Apollo theme was something I felt was very appropriate for this anniversary year. I also tried to have the images not only in mission order, but the sequence of rollout, launch, testing, lunar orbit, landing, and recovery after return to Earth. Have to think about next year's now :-)

@BlackandGreen (and anyone else) ... feel free to PM me with your email address if the download link fails to work. I can send you the pdf. I may not reply straightaway as sometimes I'm not logged in to boards.ie

A couple of new dates to add:

Mayo Dark Sky Festival dates for 2019 are now online. It will be held from November 1st to 3rd.

I had a note elsewhere about this, but on June 3rd 1769 (250th anniversary) Captain James Cook et al. observed a transit of Venus from Tahiti.

    Upcoming
Galway Astronomy Festival on Saturday, January 26th: http://www.galwayastronomyclub.ie/event/galway-astronomy-festival-2019/

Talk on Wed, January 30th in UCD about Gravitational Waves. See https://www.eventbrite.ie/e/einsteins-ears-the-new-astronomy-of-gravitational-waves-tickets-55149122510

Royal Irish Academy talk by Rob Ivison, Director of Science for ESO. Book at https://www.eventbrite.ie/e/mccrea-lecture-2019-tickets-53580247964

A huge number of events are listed for the Northern Ireland Science Festival (Feb 14 - 24) on their web site https://www.nisciencefestival.com

    Enjoy the weekend!

    Hi Deedsie,

I deleted the 2019 calendar last night as there are only a couple of weeks or so left to run for it. The 2020 thread has next year's calendar though.

I reuploaded the 2019 calendar just now and it can be saved down from https://bit.ly/2ryWG6S

    Hi John,

Sorry I am giving a telescope (Celestron Astromaster 130EQ) as a Christmas present and I wanted to see what we could possibly see December 25th to 31st.

Hope it wasnt too much trouble to reupload.

    Thanks
    D

No problem at all to reupload D.

Very nice Christmas gift! Definitely get the recipient check out any local clubs in their area as they can offer advice on its use. The IAS organize Sidewalk Astronomy in Dublin once a month and people sometimes bring their own scopes to ask questions about. Future dates will be on www.irishastrosoc.org and Dublin Stargazers Meetup have occasional observing nights at the Sugarloaf car park.
