Is it time to remove the Irish Navy from The Mediterranean

It's about time the Irish Navy stopped rescuing migrants in The Med. Instead they should be doing what the Italians are doing and investing in training and equipment for the Libyan Coast Guard in order to bring migrants back to Libya and patrolling the waters to prevent NGO ships and people smugglers. Salvini is right Italy is full up and cannot afford to take in any more migrants from Africa.

It's helping illegal entry to Europe, no they shouldn't be there.

it's stupid. Get them back to base for their 6 dinners a day ASAP

Yes, now that Italy are obeying the public wish, there is nowhere to bring them after getting stranded 20 odd miles off the Libyan coast. Bringing them back to Libya is an unnecessary risk to our troops. Stop the thing.

Also find it convenient that whenever RTE show footage of the migrants boarding the ships, the footage always seem to be shot from Port side. You'll never see them post videos with the coast in the background.

When there's enough floating bodies, they can walk across.

Whats the latest on the Aquarius ship?.They have about 600 onboard and last I heard they cannot sail to Spain because of weather conditions and are being refused entry to Italy and Malta.

We'll need them back soon enough.

If they were doing their jobs properly they would be returning those migrants back to the African coastline not illegally helping them into Europe where they have no business to be.

Some of our leaders a saying "take them all", some are saying "take none". You need a consensus to agree anything in Europe, were not going to get that. So take no one is the clever answer. Unless we want our ship full of refugees and nowhere to bring them. Secure the Libyan coast is the obvious solution.

Hundreds of miles of coastline in an unstable state.
    Good luck with that.

What's going to happen when our Navy picks up a few hundred and get refused.

You can check position of ships, ships sailing past in all directions but they're just doing loops or drifting around.

    I don't know....I wouldn't necessarily advocate a 'let them all drown' approach.

But I can't help but wonder how many more people are taking to the seas in completely unsuitable and overcrowded vessels knowing that there's a very good chance they'll be picked up and rescued by some navy or NGO....and then given a free lift to europe.

Doesn't seem like much of a solution to me to be honest.

Need to look at what they are leaving?

Where they've been picked up is public knowledge, a few news sites have handy maps showing it and the change over time. At the start it was larger ships that probably could make the full journey getting half way to Italy before faking a SOS, but now they're being picked up in a dingy right outside Libyan waters.

I really think it's well known where to watch. Do NGOs want to stop the trade? Or are they happy facilitating it?

Assuming you know where to watch, what then?

    Sink them?

You can't dock in Libya for obvious reasons.

Safely land them back in Libya?

Europe needs to create a Marshall Plan for north Africa. Now.

Just like all those American billions after 1945 built up war-torn Europe (after getting rid of some of the less pleasant rulers) and created markets for US firms, EU aid to Africa could build up those areas (subject to getting rid of the less pleasant rulers) and create markets for EU firms. Better economy ==》》 fewer immigrants landing on EU shores.

It should be a no-brainer for everybody genuinely opposed to high immigration.

France, the UK and America should resettle all the people coming through Libya. It's NATO's actions in bombing that country and empowering a load of Islamist maniacs to take over is what led to this mess in Libya in the first place.

Unfortunately the less pleasant ruler in North Africa is an abstraction made up of culture and belief system, he has no head to simply put a bullet in.

But the far majority of people being picked up at sea aren't libyan....?

I know that I'm being half facetious, but you see my point. There's a direct correlation between NATO's imperialistic adventurism in Libya and the fact the gaff is now a complete f*cking headache on this issue; not to mention a possible breeding ground for nutcases who like to blow up kids' concerts.
