How do I get started making a character?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,404 ✭✭✭✭sKeith

My first task is picking a race, once i have a race, then i have to find a name that suits that race with the initial S K ... :) it didnt always work like that though.

for instance, Craulnober is C but i thought, close enuff..

Yes. I'm having problems deciding my class though. How should I assign my stats if I want to be... a magic user for example?

For character flavour, Truculent.org is a good jumping off place :
    http://truculent.org/llchar

If you don't know what to play, just set the drop-down to level 1, it selects everything else manually. Just remember it rolls stats which will probably be over or under the 63 limit and gives you equipment that will affect your Armor Class (AC)

It's best feature in my eyes is the random traits it assigns. Take these and group them into similar groupings or contrasting pairs, then ask why is your character like that - factor in your class, age, gender, alignment, height, weight.. keep asking questions and answering and you'll end up with a character and some backstory. They won't all be the great Gatsby but it's a starting point.

(But don't go nuts. My first character had a backstory that's around 15 pages long. He lasted about 3 days because all those details about him, his family, his town, general agrarian cylces, cow gods etc made him unplayable as an adventurer)

Well if you read the pages I asked you to read you’d see thatvmavic users need high proficiencies in certain attributes to cast spells
    Int
    Con
    Dex
    Str
    Wis
    Chr
That’s intelligence constitution dexterity strength wisdom and charisma
If you want to be a magic user you need more int wis and chr .
There are three ways to allocate points
You can take 63 points and allocate them whatever way you like as long as no stat is over 15
You can roll 3 six sided dice (d6) six times (more on onlin erolling later )
Or you can roll 4 six sided dice and discard the lowest six times
The third option is the most likely to give you an advantage but it’s not a sure think
    Average roll of a d6 is 3.6 so average of 2 d6 is 10.5 and 6 times 10.5 is 63
However you might roll over or under avarage
Rolling 4 d 6 and discarding the lowest increases you likely score to 12 or 72 points and it’s the way you would go if you wanted a random charachter

Why do bad things happen to good characters?

How do you mean good charachters do you mean well written well played charachters or simply the alignment
I think the answers is free will
It is a game of free will and unlimited choices
You can choose to do anything but each choice will create a repercussion
So that good player will have bad things happen if they don’t activilky avoid the bad things

OldGoats tried and trusted method of selecting a character.
    1) Allow everyone else to create chatracters.
    2) Choose the race/class that no-one else has yet picked.
    3) Randomise everything else.
    4) Let Necro/Fourier worry about the rules and just roleplay the character.

    I'm older than Minecraft goats.

Unfortunately, only one person can use this method as if two or more tried to use it, you would be waiting forever.

Stupid question time, where does one find those charactor sheets? Its very late and i seem to have missed the post :(

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,544 ✭✭✭Mollyb60

When you generate the stats on http://truculent.org/llchar/ you click show PDF. It generates a pretty character sheet for you then.

Don't worry too much about it. The important things are your name, class and the 6 stats (Str, Dex, Con, Wis, Int, Cha) - everything else is calculated from them. A lot of the information the Truculent site adds to the character sheet - languages spoken, Armour class, character traits etc. etc. - is randomly generated and doesn't apply to this game. The rest of it is derived from those stats.

If you really want to have a title though, here are the official ones for Level 1 :
    Cleric - "the Acolyte"
Fighter, Dwarf, Halfling - "the Veteran"
Magic User, Elf - "the Prestidigitator"
Thief - "the Rogue" or "the Apprentice"

    professor M.

    your level is 1
    your hp is 7

you need to substract 5 points from whichever stats you want. total should be 63.
at lvl 1 you dont have acces to any spells beyond lvl1 yet

scrub any items, we will give you what you need in the dungeon on thread.
also, dump the treasure, then repost here and we give it another quick look
