Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. I was looking at houses in Johnstown/Kill area as I was thinking of renting there. What is the story with the halting site down by the N7, is that a permanent fixture?

Coming into naas yesterday they had a fire lit and it was sending smoke across the road.

They had also thrown loads of debris over the fence onto the road.:eek:

Is that at the roundabout by the ball?

In the small area in front of old cement factory?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,720 ✭✭✭scwazrh

They've moved from there now to a field beside the tile shop in johnstown.Theres another group of them at the back of Kill across from the old cement factory , a group at five lanes end on blessington road and I noticed two caravans on the footpath on the new road from punchestown to kilcullen road...Naas must be a nice spot for their summer hols

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 840 ✭✭✭micks

Unmarked Garda car there when I went past last night.
Now they've moved back to cement factory entrance

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,869 ✭✭✭PeterTheNinth

Passed by there again this morning and it's full of rubbish with two giant piece of concrete in front of the gates to the field.

That ring road around Naas has more perimeter defences than the beaches of Normandy before the D-Day landings.

Would you move in to an area where every summer, ANYBODY (not just Travellers) pulled up a whole load of vans, parked illegally and dumped all their rubbish in the area? What's racist about not wanting your area treated like a tip site.

Could not even go for a walk around Kill last Summer, the cycle paths were destroyed with rubbish everywhere and caravans parked up on the cycle path, with dogs tearing the backside out of anyone going past. Delighted the bollards put up.

I pay property tax to the Council to keep my area clean, sick of this plague every summer, its not acceptable.

    Its not racism.

They should be fined for littering. The rest of us would get a 150 fine if we as much as dropped an apple butt on the road. Is that not racism against settled people.

Exactly , why do travellers get away with things that settled people can't?If I went to camp in a tent on the roundabout near the ball you could bet I would be moved on very quickly , why can travellers stay for weeks or months where ever they feel like ?There must be some reason they cannot be moved by Garda otherwise surely they would be.

Probably for the same reason that they get away without the same tax burden that the rest of us do.
Because they're a protected species in Irish society.

You only have to go back a few posts to see the auld "racism" card get played.
That's one of the main problems nowadays.

If I go around littering the place and dodging tax then there's nobody going to save me with a racism card.

With the recent ruling, making them so far above the law that they are untouchable, I'd wonder if the Gardai will steer clear?

Well I for one will torment my local councillors on this.

Do the rest of us not have any rights?

Taxpayers money which we pay and should be used for positive amenities for the Kildare area such as playgrounds and parks and landscaping is diverted to clean up the mess they leave.

    What's fair about that?

How is not wanting to live in a filthy tip racist. Saw the state of the place earlier. It's a joke. Some people have zero common sense.

No, you just don't get it.

We just want to live in a normal working class area.

I work so fckn hard every week to pay my mortgage so I can be proud of what I achieved and respect my surroundings but yet some people contribute nothing but think they can just discard their rubbish, that someone else will clean up after them, that someone else WILL PAY to clean up after them, after their discarded plastic and crap filled children's nappies that they dump on the side of the road with no respect for anyone or anything .

They have no respect for the environment, this planet or the people who work from arsehole to breakfast to provide a future for themselves.

I really don't understand people like you who just make excuses for these people who have no respect for anyone else and just take take take without contributing anything back. Drive down there and look at the rubbish.

    It's not ok.

    It's not fair.

stop making excuses and get real

Another worthwhile contribution to the thread from you, no wonder you ended up locked in the attic.

Me, I don't live in Naas, but work there. And they are a Fukien menace to society, nearly every day have to shadow them around the place to stop them stealing. No matter how much video footage or photos or registration plates you get, gardai can do **** all.

We should defend our way of life to an extent that any attempt on it is crushed, so that any adversary will never make such an attempt in the future.

Perhaps you should open your eyes. The reality is there in front of you.

drive down by the ball in Naas and see what tax payers of Johnstown are currently puting up with.

Its not racist to complain about a group of people's actions. The facts are there to be seen , travellers in certain areas of Naas are leaving those areas in a mess and and are making tax paying residents of the areas uncomfortable .As always nothing will be done about it due to fears of people like you crying racism .

We'll stick ya down for a "no comment" then Anne. Because I asked the question yesterday an hour after you replied to me and again tonight and that wee green light thing says that you're online for the last few hours but have refrained from commenting further.

If you don't mind I'll suggest that you ran yourself down a cul de sac by saying we're the same species.
Because if we're the same species then we should all adhere to the same rules.
So if I stop paying taxes, park my van in the middle of a green area and litter the daylights out of other peoples neighbourhoods then nothing will happen to me? Sure you'll support me wont't you?

What actually would happen is that I'd be arrested and rightly so.

So I ask you again, are you sure we're the same species? Or are they a protected species?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,869 ✭✭✭PeterTheNinth

I think that Anne might have been scared off by the fact that a lot of people that disagree with her. But that's not the point, it's not about trying to bully somebody else off the thread because they have a different opinion. The point is that the majority of people are in agreement that it's not acceptable to lie down and let any group of people just p1ss all over their area, and consider it acceptable because they are a minority.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,827 ✭✭✭AnneFrank

Hi Peter, don't worry i wouldn't be scared off by keyboard warriors, and yes we are all entitled to our opinion.
But at no point have i defended the actions of whoever made the mess.
That was not the point i was making.
Calling them a different species or taring them all with the same brush, is in my opinion, incorrect.
There is good and bad in every part of society, as demonstrated on this thread.

Not being racist or anything but just giving the facts.

There are less than 2,000 travellers out of 30,000, in Ireland, that actually travel around but all too often leave their mark wherever they stop.

Two studies have been produced in relation to Travellers in prison. One was conducted in Ireland in 2014, and found a disproportionate amount of Travellers are incarcerated.
Men are between five and 11 times more likely to be jailed, while for women it's 18 to 22 times more likely.
(A 2005 study looking at mental health among Travellers claimed that they make up 5.4pc of the Irish prison population, while only comprising 0.6pc of the population as a whole.)

A study carried out in the UK in 2011 reckoned that travellers make up 1pc of the prison population in England and Wales: a massive disparity given that the general population is 56 million people and that there are only 15,000 travellers. (0.026785714285714288pc of the population).

They have a different DNA and are now recognised as a different race of people, this is all fine but much of their culture is so far removed from the laws and culture of the rest of the population and will always cause friction.

There are so many real causes crying out for funding in Kildare,it's saddening to see our funds diverted to clean up after the travellers year after year.

its not about anyone's rights , but no one has the right got to leave a load of filth and expect permanent residents to pick up the bill.

Nope. Simply asking that if we're all the same why are the rules applied differently? (or not applied at all)
But forget the context entirely and choose one line from my post and deduce that I'm a racist if that's what you want to do, off you go...

    .

Fair enough I thought that's what you were implying. hence the curt reply. My bad.

About the species comment, my question was are they a 'protected species'?
Meaning why do rules applied to the rest of us regarding taxes and littering etc seldom seem to be enforced in the same way when it comes to travellers? And if we're all the same then we should all be treated the same.
    Hence the phrase protected species.
A 'protected group' then if that sounds better.
What people are asking for is for them to be held accountable in the same way as everyone else.
It's not about a load of big evil racists hating travellers and looking to have a go at them just because they're travellers, its simply frustration among people that they seem to get away with certain things like the littering and tax issues that others dont.

Society has changed their attitude to homosexuals and are more educated and accepting of their situation.

Society can also live in harmony with the traveller people if they make more of an effort to abide by the laws of the land. Some travellers do but sadly too many make a career out of lawlessness and the situation is not improving.
Travellers are just not trusted and they have to make the change, not society in general.

    Meaning.....

You said that travellers have different DNA and are a different race of people.

My point is that we all have different DNA and travellers are not a different "race" but have a different ethnicity. There is a huge difference in the meaning of these words.

Again, I'm not debating the actions of anyone of the travelling community, just observing and pointing out questionable language.

I suppose it comes down to your understanding of the word race, some experts say there are only 4 or 5 races in the world while others argue there are much more. Race is not a scientific segregation but one of convenience.
