N56 - Mountcharles to Inver [open to traffic]

CPO and some clearance work (asbestos affected buildings) was done a number of years ago but I'm not aware of any moves since.

This is effectively a realignment as it's a basic 4.9km realignment. Why it's taking so long to get off the ground is anyone's guess. It's shovel ready so no reason it can't start in the next year.

Construction will begin on the first 2.5km of this scheme between Mountcharles and Drumbeigh in 2017. €300k has been allocated for this.

The remaining 2.4km between Drumbeigh and Inver Bridge has had €200k allocated to complete land acquisition along the route.

I see from the plans that the improvement is mostly an online widening. A bit surprised as it's already quite wide. Must be mostly about increasingly capacity and safety.

Imagine there going to just take the few bends out as per the fencing thats down.

That's it. It's basically a bit realignment but it's still not funded. Land was CPOd a couple of years ago

TII are saying a start date of Autumn 2017 for the first 2.5km section of this scheme.

Regarding Phase I: Mountcharles to Drumbeigh

* Tender to be issued in the next few weeks with tenders accepted til the end of August.
* Construction to begin Q4 2017 with construction to wrap up Q1 2019

Phase II, Drumbeigh to Inver Bridge, will begin shortly after the completion of Phase I. The total cost of the project is €15.4m.

According to CIS Ireland, construction of Phase 1 (MC-Drumbeigh) started today. 2 years to completion.

Drove through today, nothing much to see so far, site compound set up and cones and goalposts erected along the route but no works visible other than a few trees and bushes cleared.

Have they CPO'd any buildings for it? From reading above its just a basic realignment but theres a few houses very close to the road, here for example..

There were CPOs and demolition some years ago, Kevin Sharkeys empty old gallery was one removed at the time.

Been a while since i was over there, but fairly sure the new section runs behind that house now as its all fenced off.

Surprised by the scale of the works along here, the area is totally unrecognisable from a few months ago. I assumed it was a simple and fairly cheap realignment but they're currently ploughing through the middle of a large hill for the new road, around 6 or 7 huge excavators and similar number of large dumpers all working side by side levelling the hill. Impressive site, I'll try and get my camera out when I'm passing again

Phase 1 of this road (Mountcharles-Drumbeigh) is almost complete now.

Final surface and lining has been complete for all of this road except for the Drumconnor Hill. Should only be a few weeks until it is all completed.

The climbing lanes at Mountcharles bypass and Drumconnor Hill have both been extended slightly.

Drove this section last week, mainline done, just finishing off the verges, fencing etc. Speed still limited to 50 KPH
