Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

The VDot challenge

I've had alot of bad attempts at trying to get some fun competitiveness into boards, this could be another one :D
    However I'll have another crack.
It should be suitable for all standards and the gist of it is improvement, who can improve their vdot the most by a set date.
VDot is a term used by super coach Jack Daniels and it's his unit of measurement for current fitness based on most recent race results.
For our comp though and for those that don't have the book, I'll do the updating. All races up to the marathon will be included in the comp but for calculating starting Vdot what I want is your most recent race time from a suitable distance between 1 mile and 10k from an accurate course.
I'm thinking end of October for the end of comp coincide with Dublin marathon.
The below is a sample of Vdot, JD gave me a Vdot of 42 for my donore 5k time of 23'07, I now have a 5'55 mile time from a few days ago, so JD now gives me a VDot of 49, an improvement of 7. This will be in a league format (Gain/loss is the column for ranking) and could be alot of crack so come on.

    Sample table

    Name|Starting VDot|Gain/Loss|Current VDot|
    woddle|42|7|49

    Actual table

    Hey Woddle,
Great idea to measure improvement. I have a Vdot of around 40 for a 10k time in Sixmilebridge a few months ago. I find that the shorter the distance the more accurate the Vdot as my current half marathon time is a couple of points below 40. My next competitive race will be the Dublin half so will see if I can improve.
(Ps. Not sure how you want the table to work so please feel free to update)

Good stuff dev, don't worry about the table, it's set to auto set the gain/loss column and put those with the biggest improvements at the top.

Can't I take a time from back last year as the starting point?

Would be good if I can take more out of my last 5km time, but not that much room left for knocking off huge chunks of time. :(

What distance are we going to calculate this on. My best vdot is for shorter races but falls for the longer distances - 52 - mile, 46 - half mar.
And I'd imagine everyone is going to have differences depending on what they enter.
Maybe if is was just for 5k and done on a time trial every month it might be more accurate.

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 24,118 Mod ✭✭✭✭robinph

Mines on a recent 5km on a very flat course, I think I should have used the time from the hilly parkrun course I've been doing instead though.

I think when calculating your starting vdot it should be based on race distances from mile to 10k because of what you said and if you improve your vdot over a bigger distance, extra kudos

When I was thinking of it earlier I reckoned the best strategy would have been for me to run a half or full, get the vdot and then go run a mile race :D
So that's why only vdots based on mile to 10k

If you don't have an recent shorter distance and the marathon VDot is close to your current fitness I don't see why not.

You should have started that BEFORE I ran my shiny new 5k PB last week (18:05). I'd be looking at a smashing improvement. Now I'm most likely going to see a downwards slide.

My 52:06 for the Dunshauglin 10k gives me a 38.

I have no races of under 10k planned for the rest of the year, but I will look for a couple now :)

44 for Streets of Galway 8k in 36:06.

Any chance we could add in an extra column for the first race of the season so as to show how far we have come to this point?
    Purely for info purposes?;)

To hell with it, I'm gonna throw it in!

Fine with me Belcarra, I have had a good season :P.

Current time is based on a mile of 4.39. I think its easier to improve on the shorter distances, to get 67 would required a 4.30 mile, which is only 9sec off my mile time, but would require a 15.29, or 50sec off my 5k time!

are there many here that use daniels race prediction calculator?

seams to be on the optimistic side for the longer distances, no?

Last year all my times less than half successfully predicted then a couple of half times during the year, then that only over estimated my full time by a couple of minutes.

I'll let you know next week if this years shorter distance times match with the half prediction, if they then match with the full times by the same difference as last year I'll be delighted.

ya, let us know the difference anyway, cheers,

i use the vdot for training paces but when i see the 10m and half times for marathon prediction i get a little cautious and revert to mcmillan....but hopefully the vdot system will work this year as i wont hit the mcmillan times i want...

I think the vdot numbers are a bit too ambitious for me and McMillan is a touch closer to the mark, maybe that just means I'm not trying hard enough.

Those kind people in the Race Series have given me a chip time of 1:40:20 resulting in a VDot of 45:).
Had I been one second slower it would have been 44:D.
