after waiting since last october for fine weather to plaster house, the job was done 3 weeks ago! there are hairline cracks on two walls because plasterers rushed the floating- these walls are the ones most exposed to weather, we are concerned that it will take in water and think it should be re-done. should we knock off existing plaster or is it the right idea to put another layer on top??

If you can post a few photos that would help.

A number of thing that can happen to leave work unsatisfactory.

    1. Weather to warm for plain cement work or floating. In other words cement drying out too quick.
    2. Poor sand, to much clay content. Too much cement, or poor mixing.
    3. Wall not wetted enough prior to application of render.
    4. Rapid drying out. Irish tradesmen not used to this good Werther
    5. Say for example walls facing south should be planed to finish later in the evening when sun has passed.
It could be a any number of issues. If the wall is very bad you will need to strip back to block, you cannot render over existing. If you have professional people advising ask them to come and look at this.

thanks palerider - the engineer was here today and the plasterer and they're going to knock it off next week - the weather was surprisingly good 2 weeks ago and that with a combination of rushing the floating caused it (largish wall area) and me being a particular sort didnt want a smooth plaster finish - we want the plaster to have a 'napped' finish. i guess it doesnt always pay to be different!!
