Hi, Myself and 5 other colleagues received letters from our employer last Thursday night. These letters stated that we are being put on a one day week from Monday (11th Jan) and that we should get onto welfare regarding getting help for the 4 days we aren't working!

This came as a complete shock as none of us have ever been laid off before or given shortened hours. In actual fact, none of us ever had to access the welfare website before .

We are in a union and our union told us on Friday that the reason the company gave her was to protect the staff as Covid 19 cases are so high, and its best the staff stay at home to stay safe. To point out that we are classed as an essential worker and we worked through previous lockdowns. The reason given in the letter to employees was that money is an issue .

Can someone enlighten me if what the company is doing is legit ? Some background for clarity... the employees have a WRC complaint pending due to other issues within the company. It just stinks that they are not availing of any government help or putting us on the Covid payment so we get 350..as of now ,one days pay just doesn't cut it.. Our jobs aren't high paid or anything, the average between the 6 of us would be under 20e/hr.

Any thoughts will be most helpful as this is as stressful as it gets .

Is it just the 6 put on short time that are taking a WRC case?

Does the company have financial problems?

Can you tell us what industry you're in?

I suspect the employer will argue that though the service is essential, not all employees are and that they are following government guidelines by not requiring non essential employees to attend for work.

Effectively the op will be arguing that they should be allowed to attend a workplace even though they are not essential. Hard to see that succeeding.

Document every communication to and from your employer going forward, including any text messages to/from managers. Get legal representation next.
