Dry January

I'm doing Dry January this year. Had a great Christmas but went overboard on food and booze so decided to knock it on the head for the month.

I find social occasions can be difficult when everyone was drinking. There are generally fewer social occasions in January so makes easier. My mates are generally very supportive when one of us tries to do something like this whether it’s veganuary, or a veggie month or whatever else.

    Is anyone else doing it?

    Support your local pub.
    Do not do Dry January.
    Pick any other month.
    Pubs really suffer in January.

I think giving up booze for a period is a good idea but not when everyone does it at the same time. Sheep.

I'm going to go a full year without booze. I got far too drunk on Stephens night and I simply don't like how drink makes me feel anymore.

Yep of course I'll survive. What I mean is when we're out in the pub together or at a match they don't encourage you to drink and generally support the decision to not drink.

Always find it strange how everyone thinks doing a dry January is some achievement. Most people are off the drink anyway so even if you wanted a drink it's not like you have anyone to go with.

And if you are the sort who struggle to go a few days without drinking by yourself at home then you need to consider giving up alot longer than a month.

Each to their own, I just prefer to try and do alternate drinking and non drinking weekends during the year, special occasions or holidays excepted. That way you can actually not drink for at least 5 months of the year without a showy 'dry' month. January is a crappy month during which it's nice to have a few drinks here and there.

Pubs can use the money they get from the rest of the year to cover a period of low sales. It's perfectly predictable that people will drink less in January and February. They've just had a busy period over the last month or 6 weeks so they can do whatever they like with that money -like covering costs in January when sales are slow.

I really don't need to worry about pubs. The fact that people have drunk so much in the last few weeks is one of the main factors in doing dry January. So pubs can cut their cloth to measure. People aren't there to provide pubs with customers.

I'm giving it a go this month.

I drank a lot over December and really feel that I need to cut back a lot.

I'm already feeling much better, well rested and in a better mood.

Let's see how January goes and then I'll see what I do next to adjust my drinking for the future.

a rule I have followed for a long time is zero drinking at home. if I want beers off to the pub.
you find you drink less because it costs you more but you enjoy your booze more because you meet people.

Not a chance, I’ve no time for these “dry” months people do. I’ve had a few beers most days of Jan so far, nice to enjoy a few rather than making the month even harder with going back to work etc.

It's one of the main irishisms that annoy me. If your someone who doesn't get absolutely sh1tfaced at least one day a week, something is wrong with you. I'm not a massive drinker and get alot of grief about not drinking.

Whilst dry January is a good idea, people would be better off starting with 1 dry week per month for the year.

I'm going to attempt the same - although I'm giving myself 5 passes in the year.
I've got two weddings and a stag in the year so that takes up 3 of the passes.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,817 ✭✭✭Raconteuse

No, don't see the point. I just won't drink much. Was out last night and I've a wedding (just a small event with evening meal and drinks) and birthday do coming up this month. The days of getting pissed are gone, but I'll enjoy a couple of drinks at each.

Why? You’d swear getting pissed is like the most mental thing in the world? Have you had many bad experiences?

Doing things like dry January like a sheep is only feeding into all the absolute **** who thinks anyone who even smells alcohol is a raging alcoholic. Don’t appease the ****wits and have a few pints in January.

It's not sheep, some of us totally overindulge over Xmas period. I had Xmas parties, get togethers, way too much food, 2 weddings, etc.
I toyed with the dry Jan idea but ended up drinking in a few bars in Dublin with me moth last night. So I've already failed.
So my plan isn't dry Jan, just not as bleedin' wet as Dec was.

Ah here, it's not that mad a thing to say. It's one very straightforward thing - getting older. The hangovers become too horrendous.

As I hurtle into middle age, I can say hangovers were pretty bad when I was younger too.

LOL. I certainly haven't suggested 'anyone who even smells alcohol is a raging alcoholic'. And I won't have a few pints because I'm off the booze for the month.

The sheep insult has been used twice in this thread already. It's hardly surprising that more people would choose to not drink in January given the tenancy to drink loads in the preceeding month.

Sheep, **** and fcukwits. Bit over the top considering other people are choosing to not drink and nobody's asking you to do anything.

If people didnt overdo it in the first place you could enjoy a few brews anytime. Also it must piss off genuine alcoholics with legit challenges to give up booze to have a bunch of **** swanning around feeling great about themselves for not touching a drop for 30 days.

I dont really get dry January to be honest.

Can you not just go back to the, relatively, healthy relationship that you had with booze pre-December?

I just don't understand the need for drama to be attached to nearly everything that people do.

It conjures up the notion that people dont actually like drinking and just do it to get sh*t-faced and see no enjoyment in having a few pints with their mates.

In conclusion - people are odd

Definitely no need for the aggressive language but I suppose there just doesn't seem to be any point to it. As said, try not to over-do it all times (with exceptions like Christmas) instead of ruling it out completely for the dreariest month of the year.

I don't think I need to worry about upsetting alcoholics because I'm choosing not to drink this month. They're separate things as far as I'm concerned. If someone said they were planning to lose a few kilos by cutting out takeaways, you probably wouldn’t tell them to worry about pissing off people with eating disorders.

I think the people who are opposed to the idea of dry January are building it up into something a lot bigger than it actually is.

It’s just not drinking for a month after overindulgence over Christmas. It’s not being a sheep, or a wanker or trying to piss off alcoholics or drive publicans out of business.

Dry January was a great help to me.

    Ive always drank too much.
About 5 years ago at the age of 35 i said id give it a go.I was in a heap as usual after Christmas,id never gone a week nevermind a month without drink since i was 16.

I managed to get through it and actually didnt drink til mid feb of that year. The clarity of thought and health benefits were amazing and i learned a lot from it.

I did it every year since and always enjoy it.I also still enjoy pints and even getting hammered from time to time. Im not half as much of a p1sshead as i was and my life is a million times better off for it and Dry January was the first step.

    Top tips Ive learned.
Dont avoid the pub.If the lads are going out Ill go too,I love the non alco beers and just stay in rounds even. Its only after about 3-4 pints that the sh1te talk will start and at this point you hop in your car and are home and fresh for the next day.

Go to a show/match.Im a big comedy fan but probably go to the most shows in jan.A great night out where youre guarenteed to be laughing and enjoying it and deffo not missing the booze.

Treat anybody who questions you or tries to force drink on you with the disdain they deserve.

    Thats just my experience.

It’s interesting how many people are annoyed that a few people would choose not to drink for the month.

The amount of insults being tossed about on here. Imagine getting this mad over other people not drinking. I do dry january. Have done for the past few years. There's no harm at all in having a bit of a reset after the excess of christmas.
