Anyone know a reasonably direct way to get from Killiney to the Dublin hills via public transport?

    I think you're looking at two-three buses.

    1) go into town, get bus back out

    2) go into DunLaoghaire, get 75 bus across towrads Tallaght, then get outbound bus. (but 75 is slow and infrequent)

    3) get to Foxrock church and pick up a 63 to Kilternan. Foxrock church could be got to via Dun Laoghaire (46a,75) or Bray road (84)

depends on where you're actually going.

You need to decide where you want to go and how to get there. The DART / Route 59 are obvious starting points for you. From this you can either get to Dún Laoghaire, Bray or Tara Street DART stations. From there, you have a choice of the

The 75 from Dún Laoghaire (Crofton Rd. / DART Station) via Foxrock Church, Stillorgan, Dundrum and Nutgrove Shopping Centre to Tallaght (The Square).

The 44/B/C, 48A, 63 and 118 (limited service) operate from Townsend Street / Fleet Street (near Tara Street DART station).

The 46A will also connect you from Dún Laoghaire (Crofton Rd. / DART Station) via Foxrock Church, to Stillorgan (ends up in city centre).
    • The 44/B/C via Dundrum up the mountains towards Glencullen, Stepaside, Kilternan, Enniskerry.
    • The 48A via Dundrum to Ballinteer (base of Three Rock mountain), get off just after Superquinn in Ballinteer.
    • The 63 from Fleet Street via Foxrock Church to Kilternan.
    • The 118 from Fleet Street via Stepaside to Kilternan Church.
    • The 145/146 from Bray (DART Station) to Ballywaltrim (145/146) and Kilmacanogue (145 only). N.B. Outer suburban fare applies between Ballywaltrim and Kilmacanogue.
    • The 161 Nutgrove Shopping Centre to Rockbrook / Tibradden
    • The 184 from Bray (DART Station) to Newtownmountkennedy (very much Wicklow)
    • The 185 from Bray (DART Station) to Enniskerry.
If you want to go hill climbing, get the Ordnance Survey 1:50,000 map of Dublin (sheet 50, not the motoring map) and the one of North Wicklow (sheet 56) if you are going that far. Not all tracks and roads are perfect on the maps, but the maps are generally good. The new (edition 4) Dublin City and District Street Guide also covers a lot of this area (expanded coverage), but does not show heights.

Note that a lot of areas in the mountains are quite remote, even the main tracks might have only 1 person per hour on an ordinary day. Travel with company or bring a mobile phone and tell people where you are going. Bring some food and water and a good pair of shoes. Prepare for heat, sun, wind, cold and rain (one side of a mountain can be very different to the other). Oh yeah, bring a good camera for the views, deer, etc.

Thank you very much sir! ...This beats the pants out of paying €40 for a taxi to and from Marlay Park!

On not getting lost on the hills...I generally just follow the Wicklow Way from Marlay until 3 Rock or a bit further (though it goes down a busy narrow road for about a mile a little after there and that's a pain in the ass). Every turn is signposted (at least as far as I've been down it) so it's a very safe route.

We are here to please :)

Just one thing, quite a few these bus routes have only moderate services, 1-3 buses an hour.

Also the 65 (not 65B) to Blessington, 16 to Ballinteer or 15/b to Scholarstown / Ballyroan / Knocklyon, 15C to Ballyboden, 49/A to Firhouse.
