Three months ago, I graduated from college after sitting my final exam. On the way home I called into Burn's car sale in Sligo to have a look around. Had zero intention in buying. Pulled up and I walked around the used car section. A nice 2006 1.4L 7th generation civic caught my eye. I couldn't look away. It was up for 1,200 and was in Spotless condition. It was the same as this: Used_Honda_Civic_2005_Hatchback_Petrol_Manual_for_Sale_in_City_Of_Bristol_UK.jpg

I got so excited at the thought of a new (to me) car. I became excited and went in to enquire about it. The sales man brought out the key and turned on the car. It had 190,000 miles on the clock and a fresh n.c.t test. I brought it for a test drive. However, on the test drive something just didn't feel right. It didn't feel as responsive as I hoped. Pulling in after the test drive I parked it up. Feeling a bit disappointed I got out and locked the door and returned the key to the sales man. As I was walking back to my own car, I noticed a 2007 8th gen Civic. I never really liked these car at all. Walking around it looking at its futuristic design thinking "What were Honda doing with such a design". However, while I was there, I said feck and brought it for a test drive. Extremely impressed with the design of the interior and felt brilliant to drive. I entered bends at speed and the civic handled it beautifully. At this stage I knew this would be my next car. When? That I wasn't sure. Maybe 6 - 8 months I hoped.

Returned to the dealership after the second test drive. Before getting out I checked the mileage. The display read 96,820. Returned the key to the sales man again! He asked me what I thought! I explained that I felt it was a better drive than the previous Civic. I asked him how much he was looking for and he explained that he would have to get 3,300 for it. Chancing my arm, I asked how much would he take for it today. He said 3k was the lowest figure he could take. I sat there for a moment in silence. I looked up and I said: I'll take it! I knew I was taking a chance on this as it only had an n.c.t until October. I also explained that the car would have to get new tyres prior to me collecting it. I paid off €650 off the deposit.

So called back a week later and picked it up! and my policy was changed over to the civic before leaving

    36480011460_a78f159948.jpg

    36480011120_8ffc12cb9d_z.jpg

It was nearing the end of the warranty, so I put it through the n.c.t early.

    N.C.T Result 1 (Fail)
Items: Rear bulb intensity, extensive corrosion to the back plates and indicator was not working on the driver side wing mirror.

So I brought it to the dealership to get these items sorted! :)

Re-Inspection 1(Fail/advisory) Bulb intensity (again!)

The Civic then failed on the bulb intensity

So I brought it back to the dealership (again!). It turned out that the mechanic never changed the bulb.:eek:

    Finally pass! 2 years n.c.t :)

    36706551172_79290ec02c_z.jpg

..And that is the story of the Civic. :)

First mod! Yahoo!! Done this today! (28/08/2017)

So one thing that annoyed me was that the gear stick resembled a float ball in a toilet! Or as my dad calls it a "ball cock"..

    36705337112_5828a7761e.jpg

I wasn't happy with the silver surround.. So I wrapped it in 5d Carbon fibre wrap! :) This was my first time using this and it was tricky enough! But the secret was to heat it and wrap. Basically reaping this process until the interior part is covered. Abit of an improvement IMO!

    36705336912_26b0620ab7.jpg

I still wasn't happy, something was missing..

    36042197944_bcc343bb89.jpg

So I added a leather gear gaiter. Why the heck didn't these come on civics from the factory? :D

Nice catch. I wasn't sure about their wacky design when they first came out, but they've really grown on me. I like when a car maker pushes the boat out with design. Even if it's seen as a failure at least it shows they're trying.

    Eh that's what they're called. :D

Again going for that "different" design thing I suppose. Different from the norm. Nice job with the carbon wrap.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

Thanks, that's exactly it. I've come to really like it as well.

Ya, but I couldn't get used to it. :D Cheers, I hope to do the small storage box above the gear stick as well. The only problem is that you've got to take out the whole centre console first to get to the box and that's a lot of work. I'm also not that brave just yet.

So.. Today I installed a convex Broadway interior mirror.

    36060694944_7bf3ae040c.jpg

The idea of this is that it proides a better view out the rear window and rear passenger windows.

    Old oem mirror.

I had one of those wide angle mirrors on my car, but threw it away, because I wanted it more "stock". Doh! Even more Doh as it was one of those Spoon blue ones which IIRC are pricey. Though another reason was the Spoon ones, or at least mine, was a bit distorted and a distraction TBH. Maybe the Broadway is the way to go.

I wouldn't know much about spoon mirrors. But if it was worth a good few bob I'm sure it was genuine. That Broadway one is a ebay special. It's worth 20/30 euro tops..

BTW, your car is silver and not grey and please don't get square plates :)

The log book states that it's grey. So I thought a very very very very very very light grey? :D

As for the square plates, well I can't promise anything. :pac:

So today I changed the normal yellowish bulbs in the light above the rear view mirror for L.E.D's.

    Before
    36858406072_2c1fd63dc4_z.jpg

So first you have to take off the trim, to gain access to the bulbs. I found a paint scraper was very useful as it was so narrow. and it can be pushed in between the trim and the roof lining.
    36858468862_bf8308cac9_z.jpg

This is what you'd be left with!
    37029482825_198d4baf14_z.jpg

The light takes two T10 bulbs. Old Vs. New.
    36888463871_819f4b42c2_z.jpg

The bulbs must be pulled down to be taken out. Be careful though as the bulbs will be hot if you had the light on!

The L.E.D's are slightly bigger so it takes a few tries to get it in. :pac: :p Halfway there!
    37029507995_101ec1cf36_z.jpg

    Both L.E.D.'s in!
    36194208884_15cf541b1a_z.jpg

Now, because the L.E.D bulbs are bigger, this reflector part must be taken off to fit back on the first part of trim which was taken off. However, it's not needed anyway as the L.E.D bulb are much brighter. The reflector part just unclips. You're left with this!
    36888605991_f9baf06b3d_z.jpg

The cover then just clips back in! Like so!
    36632788860_de29fdd12c_z.jpg

    Done!
    36221811713_3acc930ea7_z.jpg

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,116 ✭✭✭job seeker

    Part 1

Next I changed the number plate bulbs to L.E.D's. :):P

    36888657901_02a8be47f4_z.jpg
So to do this the two plastic trim pieces has to be removed on the inside of the boot. The paint scraper can be used on these trim pieces as well. So both left and right part must be taken off like so.
    37029605445_08b650b15e_z.jpg

You're looking for this black cable on the left.
    36194353804_cfa011ea20_z.jpg

    This one here!
    36841482666_016bd48694_z.jpg

Here is the same cable for the other number plate bulb!
    36221881393_a3320cec8c_z.jpg

To take this off you just pull the cable back towards yourself!
    36632922110_c4f99385ff_z.jpg

The bulb just twists anti-clockwise and can be pulled out! You're left woth this fitting!
    36632944060_573190582f_z.jpg

Bulb holder and bulb! The number plate bulbs are also T10. Same as the interior bulbs. Old bulb!
    36221938413_63212366bc_z.jpg

The old bulb can be pulled out and the new L.E.D bulb pushed into the bulb holder. New L.E.D!36841588576_a51f35d9f1_z.jpg

To fit the bulb it's literally the reverse procedure of taking it out! :)

    Old vs. New!
    36888797111_ea7bbc6723_z.jpg

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,116 ✭✭✭job seeker

    Part 2

The same process must be taken with the other bulb!

This results. (Pics aren't great! The camera makes out that the bulbs are brighter than they actually are! But to give you an idea!)

Sorry Colm how do you mean?

EDIT: Do you mean "Dim" as in dim and turn off when the door is closed and the car is locked?

EDIT 2: I can confirm that, yes it dims and turns off once you close the door and lock the car.

Let me know Colm if this has answered your question. :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,477 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

That has answered my question yes! Some LEDs don't dim gradually. Might get them myself so.

But because I have the reflective piece taken out and the LEDs are so bright, it takes abit getting used too.

But ya, it does dim whether you're inside the car with the keys in the ignition or outside the car locking it!

Also them bulbs I found great. Had them in the number plate lights on the yaris for like a year and a half as well and no issues of overheating, blowing or anything like that!

I also think they make a massive difference to the car. The camera phone photos are just awful, it gives the impression that it looks sh!te. However, I can assure you that you'll not be disappointed! :)

Update time again! Nothing over exciting, but updates none the less.

So, since the last update the Civic

Service: New oil.air filter and Castrol C3 magnetic.

Next I changed the boot light for a purple one!

The boot light just pops out of place, a butter knife was useful for this! But becareful, the wire can disappear behind the trim which is what happened to me! Spent 3 hours trying to fish it out with my fingers!

    Half way there!

Lights look well, might change the reg plates lights myself now.

Im right in saying that the original rear view mirror is magnified ?

How you finding the cabin noise ? Mine came with two front winters so I dont know if thats what is making road noise so piss poor.

Any plans to change the radio ? Was browsing through other forums and seen that a lot of people have removed the standard one and have fitted double din touch screen units instead. Would be a while before I could consider it myself tbh for cost reasons.

Thanks! I am awful at updating these progress threads. :o

The L.E.D's are a nice cheap upgrade and I think it really suits this generation Civic

Well, I have 4 mohawk summer tyres on mine. I really don't find it bad. Compared to the Yaris I used to have, which was awful. But that's like comparing apples and oranges tbf. But I can't say it's that bad since buying the car. Another thing to consider is that you're car is a lot faster than mine.

I considered it indeed. The OEM radio doesn't look the best IMO.But it's handy that it takes CD's. But I am currently out of work for the time being, so funds are low and progress is very slow in this thread.

Yeah sure I wouldnt go as far to say its dire or anything but giving its modern futuristic design I would of expected a bit better sound insulation.

Regarding the radio, its something id really have to think strongly about as much as id love to.
I've generally held onto my other cars for about 2 years but I dont think I'll be holding onto this one as long so it probably wouldnt be worth my while. Sorry to hear your out of work, hopefully things pick up for you :)

How are the window visors holding up ? Micks Garage have the same ones as yours at the moment which I am thinking about getting in a couple of weeks.

I usally have the radio very high, so I don't find it really. However, members have re-insulated their Civics on civinfo. Under the boot, doorcards etc. I can get more info on it if you like?

Oh really? Why is that? Thanks, I should be grand in time..

I bought them on Ebay, I'd only buy team-hekos. They are good quality and I've not had any issues. I had G3 wind deflectors on my old yaris. Put down the window, grand. Put up the window and the glass caught in them and bent the window regulator. Burned the wind deflectors the following weekend. Never again! So I'd recommend team-heko's over the G3's any day!

Have you gotten all the ‘REV’ lights beside the speedo to come on yet?

    I dont think so :D

    Quick question as well colm,

When you are about to come to a stop and you clutch in, does your revs fluctuate and hold @1500 rpm for a second or two and gradually fall back to idle.

Same with reving it from stationary, when you let off the accelerator , it falls down to 1k and back to 1.4/1.5k and gradually falls back to normal idle rpm

Here a video i took of it.

    https://youtu.be/aWfk6F52tQU

Ive been advised that it could be a dirty throttle body or maf sensor.

    No, mine doesn’t do that.
Have a look at the plugs too, Honda say use iridium ones, but I’ve been using Denso KJ20CR-L11, 4 for €20 on micksgarage. They won’t last as long obviously but they’re easy to change.

Idle speed is ok, don’t think it’s idling too low there. Shouldn’t be jumping like that.

Now fixed, throttle needed to be relearned with obd reader.

Not at all impressed with the honda main dealer I bought it from who couldn't fix it after me telling them what it was and a four hour round trip to them last week..

Then three months back a rodent started squatting in my car. :( Had a feast on my back seat and left shortly after.
