Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Two scouts in the local troop when I was growing up were tied up by other scouts and had sticks shoved down their throats. I think that's technically gang rape. I reckon there are a lot of cases of sexual abuse between the scouts themselves, not just by the leaders.

Weird the way stuff like that was always just accepted. I like to think these days there would be consequences.

Three Scouse Muslims were arrested today.

The three were named: Bin Robbin, Bin Muggin and Bin Drinking.

Sadly there is still no sign of Bin Workin!:(

Nice shoe-horning in there, Tex, but I think that'll get you carded...
EDIT - ah, scouse/scouts.... now I see the connection. I think... Cheers, Corner.

As for the topic (yes, there IS a topic) I believe the original Baden-Powell was famous for his Scouting for Boys.

Seriously though: I don't think anyone would be surprsied by those numbers given the abuses that have happened in other fields were kids and unchecked adults mixed in the past. As long as people keep rational heads and keep common sense when interacting with kids, I don;t see an issue.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

That 71 were in Scouting Ireland

THERE IS EVIDENCE that there were as many as

71 alleged abusers at Scouting Ireland

according to an ongoing review, the Joint Committee on Children and Youth Affairs heard this morning.

Sadly it should not come as a shock that an organisation such as the scouts, that took youths away for weekends would attract paedophile predators who were not vetted until recently.
It was literally a field day for them.

Well, historically you're not too far off the truth. Baden-Powell set up the Scouts in 1907/1910 as a training camp for recruits to the British Empire's forces. Irish republicans at the time set up Fianna Éireann in response and many of the insurgents in the Easter Rising had been members of FÉ. Baden Powell's establishment of a youth movement for British imperialism inspired Mussolini and Hitler in the 1920s to create their respective youth movements for fascism. So, yes, the Scouts were a sort of Hitler Youth for British Imperialists. But shhhh.

In fairness to that poster, I can see his point. No man would ever want any suspicion cast upon him over such a thing. A suspicion alone could destroy somebody in our tiny society - "no smoke without fire", etc.

Consequently, if he'd really like to take his nephew fishing, the smart and best way to do it is by having other people there to protect his good name in the event of any such suspicions. A sad state of affairs indeed, but better to be safe than sorry.

The heart says yes, the mind says no.

What kind of mentality is that? Why would the mind say no to going fishing with your nephew or another relative for that matter. Such a stupid question.

I was in the cub scouts which was fantastic. Learnt a lot, and it was a lot of fun. The scouts was somewhat intimidating, the older kids in my group were complete cnuts. Lots of bullying, they would drink, take drugs etc. Didn't like it all that much. Never heard of any wrong doings from the leaders in either groups.

    given the topic.

I see these numbers have started to rise

    https://www.thejournal.ie/scouting-ireland-receives-80-phone-calls-from-people-identifying-as-victims-4365873-Nov2018/
SCOUTING IRELAND HAS received 80 phone calls from people identifying as victims to its confidential helpline after 71 alleged abusers and 108 alleged victims were identified last week, Minister for Children Katherine Zappone has said.

We'll never know the real numbers, people will choose not to come forward and people may have died.

A lot of hard working people giving up their time freely to help kids develop skills and allow them have fun.

Easy to knock them sitting at your keyboard.

My kids are in the scouts and it's done them no end of good.

I think the thing here will be about how it was dealt with. I always suspected a story like this would break about the scouts. Just like any other part of society where adults had access to children in times when there were no garda checks and the likes. I was in the scouts and the leaders were absolute legends, I would imagine that's the same for the majority. I can't imagine child abuse would have gone on and it dealt with the same way as other organisations dealt with it. But it remains to be seen, if we ever get to hear the truth of it all.

Tbf let's not just blankly deny what happened. It happened and there are records in Larchhill. That doesn't mean that all scout leaders were at it but there's no point in trying to protect good people by denying that any of this ever happened.
