Ramps in estate

    Hi

    Live in a small Dublin housing estate which is under DCC. We have ramps on the main road into the estate, but none in the other areas of the estate . We as residents are now looking to get more ramps as the speeds people are driving at are insane. Loads of kids around the place. A few near misses with kids in particular from delivery drivers.

    Any idea who we need to get in contact with ? A local TD or DCC ?

    Local councillors first off.

    Note that ramps are one of the least effective (faster you hit them the less the bounce) and most annoying for residents (noise from cars braking) forms of traffic calming possible.

    Other forms of calming such as narrowing buildouts/chicanes are a much better idea, but dearer so harder to get councils to do.

    Word of warning. I used to live in an estate that residents got ramps fitted. After a few years the residents started to enquire how to get them out. The reason, noise. Some cars didn't slow so you heard the thud of suspension. Then some of these had buggered shocks so there was noise of the cara bottoming out and the bumper scraping off the ground. Other cars slowed to go over the ramps and then accelerated away hard, with the resultant noise of engines. It was worst for the houses right next to the ramps.

    Oh, they only slowed cars at the ramps, not elsewhere in the estate.

    The Councils don't generally install speed ramps anymore and never in a cul de sac estate, only on a rat run route. The benefits are outweighed by the disadvantages.

    This is my experience with them too. The residents association got them installed, still there though, one directly outside my house. Majority drive slowly but those that don't, either accelerate between ramps or have no care for their suspension.
    There is also the flip side with some kids being oblivious to the fact they are playing on a road because they think it is now safe because there are ramps in place.
