Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Irish Championship Tipping Competition

Yes folks it's back. The reigning champion is Retd Capt Loyola while the holder of the wooden spoon is Tim Harding. Both are favourites to retail their titles.
This year the scoring is slightly different, to discourage too much safety play.

Each tipster gets three predictions each day.

1 point for correctly predicting a win by a higher rated player

    3 pts for a draw

6 pts if you predict a win by the lower rated player.

Now for the landmines :D If you predict a win by a higher rated player and he loses you lose 6 pts and if you predict a draw that ends up in a win for the lower rated player you lose 3pts. If you predict a win by a lower rated player and he draws you lose 1 point

Hopefully someone who isn't playing in the championship will keep a tally of the scores.
Each tipster is asked to also predict who they think will win the Irish Ch and who will be second and third so that this can be used in the event of a tiebreak.

I will be awarding the prizes for last year's tipping competition just before the start of round one today. It is hard to say which is the more prestigious title these days , Irish Chess Champion or Champion Tipster, both competitions are likely to be fiercely contested.

Decent turn-out for this one! I can't decide if Shane deserves a bonus point or to hit a landmine for tipping himself to win on board 1 :)

One landmine hit though - SodaBread sinks to the top of the Tim Harding Wooden Spoon standings after predicting Scott to beat Killian (but he drew). And we have a surprise leader after correctly spotting two of the four draws!

5 players pick up 3 points for predicting a draw for the wily Fox. Should really only be 2 points for that...

Won't have time to update this for the whole week, and suggest best is for posters to keep their own score updated as we go along. But for now, I make the standings as below. Any errors, shout.
    Pos	Poster T1	T2	T3	Total
    1	Tim Harding	3	3	0	6
    2	zeitnot 1	1	3	5
    3	Retd.LoyolaCpt	3	0	1	4
    3	Gavinm21	1	3	0	4
    5	Sodacat 3	0	0	3

    From the main thread -
Reminder that games are at 12.30pm today for those watching/playing. Rapid to follow prize giving for the first weekender
Might cause some tippers to come unstuck actually.

sodacat - reckon it's fair to allow each tipper discard their worst round?

I hope so because David Fitzsimons losing today has otherwise cost me all my ill-gotten gains from round 1.

While waiting for the round 3 draw to go up (delayed by the Rapid event, I guess)...

Sorry to disappoint the four tipsters who voted for me to draw today. The one who misspelt my opponent's name (accidentally I hope) owes him an apology (and maybe a quiet edit in the meantime)...
