    Team news:
Barcelona XI: ter Stegen; Semedo, Pique, Lenglet, Alba; Roberto, Rakitic, de Jong; Messi, Suarez, Griezmann.

Real Madrid XI: Courtois; Carvajal, Varane, Ramos, Mendy; Valverde, Casemiro, Kroos; Bale, Benzema, Isco.

Bale starting is a big call from Zidane.

Can't wait for the game. Kick-off is at 7pm.

This has been a strong start for Madrid. Pique keeping it 0-0 with a header off the line. Lenglet having to make an important block too.

    Good start by Madrid allright.
    Barcelona midfield getting overun .

I hate Graham Hunter so much. I'll always remember when Guardiola lost the first league game at Barca he said there is a fear they won't make Champions League that season if he stays. A clown without the makeup.

Good half for Madrid. Barca will be pleased to get in level. Valverde with some nice shots on goal and almost scored a screamer. Thought Varane was impressive at the back too. Wouldn't surprise me to see Busquets come on to give Barca a bit of control in midfield.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Very close to Bale giving Madrid the lead. Mendy just offside. Fifteen minutes remaining.

Good game for nil nil. Belt and braces.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,242 ✭✭✭✭MisterAnarchy

Poor game ,both teams are shadows of their former glory.

No idea why Valverde dropped Busquets ,Barcelona were badly overrun in midfield ,Roberto is simply not good enough.
Far too cautious a manager .

Defences come out on top as it ends 0-0. Probably a fair result. Madrid deserved something from the game for sure.

Encouraging result for the sides below. Sevilla 5 points off them, Atletico 7 points. Still the chance of getting back into the title picture, though it does look like it will be between the top two.

Pretty shockingly blunt performance from Barca no? Neymar was the deal to be done at any cost IMO.

Considering the talent on show, that was pretty poor all round. Quite disappointing.

Not getting thr negativity myself. Thought they went at it hammer and thongs even though it was scoreless.

Hey folks, heading to Madrid in Feb and want to see the Atletico v Granada game - has anyone any advice or is it relatively easy to get tickets for this type of a game? Cheers

Sticking this here. Nice gesture by Sociedad.

Go online and see for yourself. The only problem is the actual date not being fixed yet but if you can be flexible should be no issue.

7 goal thriller between Osasuna and Sociedad with Sociedad edging it. Osasuna had a man sent off near the end. Only turned on near the end of it so will have to check the highlights later. Chimy Avila looks quality and should be attracting plenty of interest.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,855 ✭✭✭irishguitarlad

Half time beteen Betis and Atleti. Both teams have hit the post but I think the home side just edged that first half. Fekir is having a great game. I also have to say that on this showing Liverpool should walk their tie against Atlético in the champions, they are definitely not the team they were.

Chimy Ávila is great, he must be a nightmare to play against as a defender, the hounding is serious.

No where the same level as before. They've become draw specialists. You can be sure that they will raise their game when the European and World Champions come to town though.

0-1 Atlético, huge error by Moreno and correa goes around the keeper and tucks It in.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,855 ✭✭✭irishguitarlad

0-2 to Atleti, hopefully Tello never wears the Betis shirt again. A fresh man and pulls out of the challenge against Trippier, a coward.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Madrid look like they're going to go into the new year two points behind Barca unless they can find a goal in the final minutes. 0-0 against Bilbao with stoppage time approaching.

Full-time and it ends goalless. Only saw the final ten minutes but Bilbao keeper Unai Simon has been named MOTM so he must have kept them in it.

A quick question for anyone who has bought tickets recently for a Barca home game.

If we buy 3 tickets on the Barca website, will the 3 seats be together or only 2 of them? They say "paired tickets", but I can't find anything about larger groups.

I'll be going in April with my wife and son. My wife has said she'd rather not go to the game than spend the guts of €100 and one of us to be sitting by ourselves.

Bottom club Espanyol take an early lead against Barca in Abelardo's first game in charge. They've only had 12 per cent possession as well.

Half-time and Espanyol lead at the break. Suarez has hit the post, but Barca have been poor and Espanyol look threatening around the box. Big improvement required for the second half. Madrid and Atletico won earlier today.

1-1. Great finish from Suarez following Alba's perfect cross. Ideal start to the second half for Barca.

2-1 Barca. Sub Vidal with the header after a great Suarez cross with the outside of the foot. Suarez has been the star man tonight.

Barca down to ten as De Jong gets a second yellow for a shirt tug. Might be a chance for Espanyol to salvage something. Fifteen minutes to go.

2-2! Wu Lei equaliser! Great finish.

Full-time and it ends a draw. Good start for Abelardo and I'd say Espanyol definitely deserved something from the game. Barca and Madrid now level at the top on 40 points; Atletico and Sevilla both 5 points behind.

Noticed we passed the halfway stage of the season so thought I'd do a Team of the Half-Season...

    Oblak

    Capa
    Varane
    Carlos
    Lodi

    Odegaard----Casemiro----Kroos

    Messi
    Suarez
    Benzema

GK: Think Jan Oblak remains the standout keeper and he's been in superb form of late. Also been impressed by Bilbao's Unai Simon who, despite a few errors, looks to have great potential and had an excellent showing at the Bernabeu.

RB: I like the attacking qualities of Bilbao'a Ander Capa and he was great against Barca at the start of the season. Think Kieran Trippier deserves a mention for having a good start to his Atletico career. Carvajal has done quite well I'd say too.

CBs: Raphael Varane for me is the obvious choice here. Think he's the best defender in La Liga atm and he was very impressive in the Clasico. His partner I think is an open field but I'd go with Sevilla's Diego Carlos. I've been surprised with how well he's taken to La Liga and he's chipped in with some goals too.

LB: Was torn between two here but went with Atletico's Renan Lodi. Another player that's taken to La Liga very well, and even more impressive given his age. Sergio Reguilon of Sevilla was the other I was considering. Think he's looked very good going forward but when I saw one of his games recently he didn't do a whole lot, so that played into my thoughts. Still think he has potential though.

Midfield: Decided to go with Casemiro as the DM as I feel he has been the standout in that role. Had to find a way to get Martin Odegaard in as he has been a joy to watch. Went with Toni Kroos for the final player in midfield since he's produced some big moments when called upon. Dani Parejo and Santi Cazorla also worth an honourable mention and would be worthy inclusions as well.

Forwards: Lionel Messi and Karim Benzema were no-brainers for me. I think they've been the two standout players in the league. Final spot was more open but I felt I had to include Luis Suarez given the form he's been in. Recently he's looked Barca's most dangerous player. It hurt to leave out Mikel Oyarzabal who has been one of my favourites this season. Chimy Avila has been ridiculously good for Osasuna too.

Can't get over how bad Barcelona look at the back. They get caught so easily when they lose the ball, the Atletico winner is so basic but it happens to them so often. Valverde has been at this now 3 years and still hasn't found a solution to it. The morning papers mentioning Koeman as a possible replacement either mid season or at the end of the season, it's such an uninspiring choice but kinda fits with the other managerial choices they've made recently.

They were indeed shocking at the back ,all 3 Atletico goals came from balls straight down the middle , Sunday league style defending.

Barcelona completely dominated the game and to be honest but for the farce that is VAR they would have been 4-1 up and out of sight .

He should have been shown the door after the collapse at Anfield .
2 years in a row ,his team threw away 3 goal leads from the first leg.
    Completely unacceptable at that level.

Make Messi player manager! He makes all the decisions anyway!! :pac:

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,211 ✭✭✭LineOfBeauty

On one hand he's won back to back La Liga's, his team is top of the table and through to the next round of the CL. That all looks good but Barcelona these days are a drab watch. Their football is so basic if you're judging it against the best teams. The reliance on Messi is greater now than ever before. Important players in the squad are aging, and the club don't seem to know in which direction they want to go in. Getting rid of Valverde is really a no brainer but longer term the board has a lot to answer for.

They really have a huge job ahead of them in the next 2-3 years. Looking at ages of the players.

    Rakitic 31
    Busquets 31
    Suarez 33
    Messi 32
    Alba 30
    Vidal 32
    Pique 33

With his injury, I wonder if Suarez will ever play for Barcelona again? If they go and sign a young striker in the summer I think he could end up being Beckham's marquee signing for Inter Miami.

Balague saying Quique Setien to be announced at 8pm this evening.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Mentioned last season I thought Setien would be in the frame in future after his Betis side won at the Camp Nou 4-3:

    https://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=108599411&postcount=197

His style of play fits the bill but I think Valverde can consider himself hard done by. Yeah there was an argument to sack him after the Liverpool collapse, but they stuck with him so I don't get the need to do it now when they're still in the mix for success. Pleased at least that it seemingly won't be Pochettino.

It could be a short term appointment .
Seemingly Abidal was in Qatar at the weekend and unsuccessfully tried to persuade Xavi to accept the managerial position.

Xavi said he had no intention of joining the club in the middle of the season but did leave the door open for a summer move, leading the club to reassess their options.
Xavi to become manager in the summer ?

Contract up to June 2022. Setien looks a good fit for the club in terms of his style and philosophy. Barca may well have got the right man by default seeing as they had reportedly offered the job to Xavi but he turned it down.

Hopefully lots of coverage of Setien on La Liga TV all this week!

It’s not just about philosophy. You need to be a strong character to keep respect in an dressing room that has been there and seen it all and is now an aging squad.

Obviously it's more than just about having a philosophy but that's a massive part of it at a club like Barca, it always has been. From the interviews I've read with him he certainly seems assured and confident in himself.

I know nothing about Setien but I’m unconvinced coaching Betis gives any indication that you have what it takes to keep the egos in the Barca dressing room in check.
