We get set balls outside the box every game.

And I'm struggling to understand where you lads think those goals are going to come from.

Il let you in on a secret.

    No where they'd be gone

You can’t have a lad in games that bypass him, just on the hope that he can make something happen from a set piece.

While I agree with much of what's being said on here regarding Hourihane, without him, we'd probably be in relegation zone.

He's joint top scorer and one of the highest assists in the team too at a guess.

I used say a few years back he wasn't good enough to be in a 2 man CM in the championship, he played with Glen Whelan there. He's just too easy to play against.

The reason he's getting so much game time is due to the lack of goals from our strikers. They are not scoring, therefore you need goals from elsewhere and that is a strength of Conor.

I think if we'd a striker scoring, we'd see far less of Conor.
I'd rather see him in home games against opposition we should be beating and where we'll have more possession than against the likes of Chelsea, Man Utd, he just doesn't offer enough of an all round game to justify inclusion here.

Not one free kick in any position against Man Utd or Chelsea where he could have shot from. If we got 20 corners in the last 2 games, he maybe took 6/7 and half he probably took short to someone and then we messed it up.

So is it really worth carrying a passenger like this for 90 mins for the hope of a free kick around the box? I mean we are not Barca or Man City where we can control games with 6/7 world class players, we just don't have this calibre of player to afford to have a CM (probably the most important position in the side) who is basically a passenger until a dead ball arises.

I can understand the logic of playing him at home against teams in the mid to bottom half where we should be on top of them over the 90 mins, but against good teams or most teams away from home, he shouldn't be starting.

I mean do people not remember him being dominated in the bloody championship by average sides? Because in reality he is basically a midtabled championship standard footballer and we think we can successfully stay up with him starting in the PL?

Did you miss the games? Because there was. And I recall grealish taken two of them.

Appears you hadn't watched the match

We'd have more losses under our belts as always there are those that can't see the sky for the clouds.

We need a striker lads that's on form until then we have few people putting balls in the net Conor is one of them. All this talk about carrying him is laughable if you've no real real alternative.

Hourihane needs to be scoring or assisting almost every second game to justify his inclusion, because it shines a light on his performance when he doesn't. I'd argue we'd have had better chances in matches that we lost if we had someone better in midfield, it's no coincidence imo that we have been a pretty poor second half team when teams press us. Some of the defence have got a bit of stick but it's extra work for them if players like Conor are weak control and defence wise.

I've always said if Conor plays well and /or scores, he deserves to keep his place in the team, and he was a bit unlucky to lose his place in that run of games against Liverpool and City. However, Villa are 7th highest scorers in the league, and highest out of the bottom 10, it's not a case of being short of goals, it's getting the right mix for certain games.

Hourihane polarises fans. I think hes a good asset in the team. His goals and assists show that. Him and Whelan in midfield sent Villa on its longest ever winning run.

He can disappear but hes not a 100m signing. We got super value for money. 2.5 million, we would probably get multiples of that for him at today's money and he scored some seriously important goals for the club. Would we be in the PL of it wasnt for him?

Interesting discussion about CH on the one hand it's like playing with 10 men on the other you can't knock his record and his goal against Albion in the play off SF amongst others was crucial.

I sit in the middle of the debate he's not an automatic choice on the team sheet and he's also not a 90 minute player. I think he's got to be used stategically as others have said by playing at home against lesser teams or bring him on when we are a goal down away from home chasing the game.

I'm no Hourihane fan, but I think its harsh to say that its like playing with 10 men.

He is a fine player to have in games where we're likely to have more of the ball.

How easy/difficult is it to get match tickets now we’re back in the Prem? No particular match in mind yet but will probably bring my da over as a Christmas present.

Tricky without a membership, particularly if you want to be beside each other, which I’m sure you do.

Be interested in this also, looking to go late Jan or Feb. If not a member, is it just a case of going through the channels?

Claret membership is £35 this would probably guarantee you a ticket for all home PL games including cup finals if we get there but one ticket per member.

    https://tickets.avfc.co.uk/en-GB/memberships/claret%20membership/info

Otherwise set up an account and get a fan ID, I'm a season ticket holder and we could get two extra tickets last year but only one this season. I managed to get tickets for my two kids for Southampton and Norwich they've both got a Fan ID and booking history from last season but none this season.

I was on line at 5 O'Clock immediately they came on sale on 29th Nov at that stage the Holte End was virtually sold out.

A few papers reporting that Spurs are going to try to get Mings with a 50 million bid.

I think Mings has been brilliant for 95% of every game and drops a absolute clanger once or twice a match.

Theres no doubt that he is a big presence in the dressing room though.

Smith wont play 2 right footed centre backs by the looks of it, so Engels and Konsa probably wont happen. He would probably look at Hause or bring in another centre back if it went through.

I'd take it if he had another Engels on the radar, a winger and a striker.

    I'd rather keep him.

What we need is a settled side, players like Mings who are ultimate pros with a great attitude are difficult to find.

Money in the hand isn't everything, no guarantee we'd find a successful replacement either.

El Ghazi and Luiz in for Trezguet and Hourihane.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,881 ✭✭✭Easy Rod

Luiz in for Conor and El Ghazi in for Trez.

Elmo keeps his spot. Thought he did well on Wednesday so no complaints really.

    Trez unlucky.

I think Guilbert adds a lot to the attack, I'd have him straight back in.

    Snap their hands off.

Yeah that’s like double what he was signed for, after not performing to his best since.

Can't miss chances like E Ghazi's there and expect to beat teams like Leicester

  • Moderators, Education Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 10,796 Mod ✭✭✭✭artanevilla

El Ghazi should have scored, Grealish is unplayable at the moment.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,554 ✭✭✭✭CSF

Mings has gone from Virgil Van Dijk to Titus Bramble

  • Moderators, Education Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 10,796 Mod ✭✭✭✭artanevilla

Another mistake by Mings there, booked already. He is becoming a liability.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 22,853 Mod ✭✭✭✭Bounty Hunter

Might be off, Engels on if so

    Vardy...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,789 ✭✭✭✭JPA

I love watching our attack but the defensive setup could relegate us.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,443 ✭✭✭basillarkin

Ball gave away to cheaply by big wes.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 22,853 Mod ✭✭✭✭Bounty Hunter

    Vardy...

8 games in a row scoring. Don' know if Mings should have still been on the pitch though, dropped back so much and gave them so much room in that attack. Get Engels in there before it gets worse

  • Moderators, Education Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 10,796 Mod ✭✭✭✭artanevilla

Get Mings off. Nakamba caught in possession for the goal.

Would he have scored if Mings had gone off? FFS.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,554 ✭✭✭✭CSF

Mings could do with a spell out of the firing line for a spell anyway I think. He has some great attributes but he has been a mistake waiting to happen for quite some time now.

impossible to know but i'd wager no.

Had some hard luck in games so far this season and now I fear for this game as Villa will have to go at them and might leave gaps at the back that the likes of Madison and Vardy can exploit.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 22,853 Mod ✭✭✭✭Bounty Hunter

Despite the scoreline Grealish has once again been the best player on the pitch in the first 1/4. Love watching him play

Oi less of that now. But yeah I'd say he would be amazing for England if Southgate would pick him.

now to cheer myself up here is Becky Lynch with a villa Jersey

His head might well be turned too because he is playing with a bunch of postmen. We are a horrorshow apart from him.

Mings should have been off after pulling up. That's a hamstring injury, letting him continue would aggrivate that no matter what.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,089 ✭✭✭Patser

Ffs are we not allowed shoot, stop messing around in box looking for an extra pass and someone close their eyes and blast it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,089 ✭✭✭Patser

2-0 down now, our corner backs are being slaughtered. No one helping them

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 22,853 Mod ✭✭✭✭Bounty Hunter

Hate to say it and be this negative but I think thats game over. Leicester have the best defense in the premiership and I don't see them giving away 2/3 goals when Villa throw away chances like El Ghazi did and once again Wesley does not seem to be all that involved.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,554 ✭✭✭✭CSF

I would love to hear Smith’s reasoning for Elmohamady over Guilbert here. It would have raised a few eyebrows when announced and eh safe to it’s gone quite badly

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,789 ✭✭✭✭JPA

No complaints, Leicester have been opening us up with a couple of passes all game.

1-2 now. Grealish after Lecister failed to clear from a corner

We are a one man team, but what a one man team he is.

Lets hope I am wrong there, not wrong about Grealish though. He can do no wrong at the moment

    2-1
