Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

2010 Passat rear alignment issue

    Went to get 4 wheel alignment done on 2010 passat, the rear is so bad the back wheels are driving on the sidewall!

    guy at tyre shop wouldn't touch it unless the bolts were pre loosened up beforehand he showed me the 4 offenders for toe/camber setting and told come back then.

    So when i got home I noticed the two rear wishbones were replaced at some point shortly before she brought it as there very clean compared to the rest of the underside.

    So what looks like who ever changed them on it when refitting the rear eccentric bolts for toe adjustment left them at the maximum outward setting! Hence tyres being completely mauled on the inner edge with sidewall.

    Now for the fun part, i doused the nuts and threads with copious amounts of penetrating oil. And set about on the drivers side and it opened off and i applied oil to the threads set the toe to a more neutral position.

    Set about on the passenger side and the bloody bolt snapped in half, im getting a new one in vw tomorrow and set the toe to a more neutral position instead of maximum out.

    Now the two upper control arm camber bolts are in a really awkward position and crusty as fook much much worse than the bolt i snapped. Ive oiled them up pretty good but id imagine without heating them they will not come easily and im 90% certain the bolts will be fused to the inner bush.

    So basically my question is will the toe adjustment abeit by eye / bubble level to a more neutral position help to stop the mad inner edge tyre wear or will i have to order the upper camber bolts and hope for the best with the ones on the car openening and at least have the back up of having new ones too hand maybe get bushes aswell?

    Then with everything able to be loosened for tyre shop get a 4 wheel lazer alignment.

    I can see this being a real PITA! But she wont want the car laid up for a long period or spend money on it or a mechanic because who needs of of those when poor dum dum here used to work in a garage! also i think she thinks im a magician half the time lol

    Have vw cc which had same problem very bad tyres wear on inside. New lower bushing were tracking bolt fix it . Plus tyre guy was right it not touching it as it very common for bolt to seize in the bushing

    Yeah lucky escape there, ive fitted the new eccentric bolt washer nd nut anyway so the cars mobile again, im going to keep drowning the upper eccentric bolt nuts for a few days, i bought a smallish blowtorch so ill warm them up when i decide that they have had enough oiling.

    Hopefully they wont snap off the car needs rear alignment badly if tyres are going to last any time.

    Chance getting it tracked without touching the camber adjustment. It'll likely come back into spec if the tracking is right. Worst that can happen is that he'll run you again :)

    Id say he will run me, very little interest in doing it in general although he did show me a fist full of sheered bolts and said they were all vw!

    The car has 320k on it drives like a car with 920k on it.

    Like driving a dodgem if the rear tracking is that far off.
    If you have time & interest,you could do a turf shed repair on it.Steering straight ahead,pull a twine or a lathe in line with the front wheel as far as the rear wheel. Shift your track untill it looks parallel to the line. If the wheel looks vertical or even lying in slightly,camber adjustment is prob ok. Not exact but you'll get it within range to track it properly.
