Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

This is a famous photo of the legendary Jesse Owens after winning Gold at the 1936 Olympics.

Can anyone name the famous Martial Arts practitioner also in this photo?.

And here's a photo of his coffin (draped in the Olympic flag) arriving back in Japan after Dr.Kano's death at sea only two years later.

No cant say Ive read too many books on judo, only the few that I got off a friend of my parents and ones that I picked up abroad. Something I would like to do though.

    Was it a good read?

I don't want to derail the thread, but yes its a fantastic read for a Judoka. If your not a Judoka and want to read a Judo book then I highly recommend 'The Pyjama Game'.

I was thinking along the those lines and trying to remember the stories from 'The Pyjama Game' but it all escapes me at the moment.

I'll take a wild guess and say Kimura & a Gracie, but its literally a shot in the dark'.

Don't give it away, I've to hint the sack here, but I'll give it my my best (and final) shot tomorrow morning.

Since there was chat about the All Ireland University Championships elsewhere, here's a photo of the UCG men's and women's teams from 1999. UCG did the double by winning both the men's and women's team events that year. :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 492 ✭✭Burnt

For many years the UCG womens' team was very formidable; even more so than the mens', they took third place at the international university competition in Paris in 2002; QUB possibly in combination with some UUJ/UUC my memory is hazy, repeated this sucess for the men the following year. It's unfortunate that the competiveness of womens' judo; despite the recent isolate sucesses of Lisa Kearney at internationals, is at a bit of a low ebb...

This blog http://my_sarisari_store.typepad.com/ is by a filipino photographer about various off the track aspects of life over there. His photographs are top notch imo. It's not necessarily Martial arts related (although he's putting up pictures of gay boxing contests right now :D) but it's well worth a look.

    FAIL!.

From this weekends Paris tournament [Tournoi De Paris 2010].

Read something about that guys bronze medal win in Paris on an American website. He stuck his leg out on purpose cos he knew the guy would pick it up (his opponent was from Belarus) and get disqualified. And it worked. I can't make my mind up on this..

    Another one from the weekend:
