Vanilla are planning an update to the site on April 24th (next Wednesday). It is a major PHP8 update which is expected to boost performance across the site. The site will be down from 7pm and it is expected to take about an hour to complete. We appreciate your patience during the update.

    Hi folks,

    Complete noob here but I recently came across RC rock crawlers on youtube and I was wondering if people were into them over here. Where can you actually buy them and do they come as kits or can you buy them ready to go out of the box? Any recommendations for a starter kit?

    I used the rock crawler sound effect on an "ESS dual" in my boat, it sounds good if you fancy putting one in a truck it puts a :) on my face.

    the rock crawling scene is very small here in Ireland, I know of a couple of guys that are in to it but not many.
    I have a couple of them but mainly mess around with them on my own.

    There is a couple of shops you could get one from;

    Modeltune in the north - I used these guys constantly and can't fault them;

    then down south you have the Radio Controlled shop - only used them a couple of times but I've never heard anything bad about them;

    With regard to a good starter that's ready to go from the box or "RTR" as they are know (Ready to Run), it all depends on your budget, you could get one anywhere from a couple of 100 quid right up to over a thousand.
    Most of the big name manufacturers do them, Traxxas, Axial, Element, etc. but as a starter you wont go too far wrong with somethign like this;

    Thanks, I was thinking if starting out with an Axial scx24. They're quite small but seem to be a good entry level one that is easy to upgrade.

    the Axial SCX24 is a cool little thing, I have one myself, but the problem is they are small in comparison to a "regular" 1/10th scale.
    They are fine to mess around with on your living room floor but they will struggle if you bring them outside, just as an idea of scale I can sit the SCX24 on the roof rack of a TRX4 with room to spare !!

    With regards to upgrading; I've never done anything with mine, I don't really see any advantage of spending a bunch of money on it for the gains you'd likely get, I just enjoy it for what it is but each to their own, there's plenty of upgrades for them.
