Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

ZAG has no milk. Bottom 15% of the limousin breed. Crazy as he is by Commander and Hawk, both great for milk. He gets his 5 stars from his great fertility, easy calving etc.

He still is a 5* maternal bull but at least €100 lower than he was a few years ago.
ZAG was supposed to be the perfect bull to breed cows off according to ICBF.
ICBF are giving too much % weighting to fertility in the maternal index.
ZAG daughters are by and large very fertile, have two of them here and they go in calf easily so far.
But ZAG scores poorly for skeletal ( they are smaller than average), docility (found them quiet enough here tho), daughters milk (they do lack milk big time).
He’s poor for daughters calving difficultly.

The way the maternal index is put together is flawed imo.

Well, she would be better looking but on average she will have less milk and poorer fertility.
I was talking to a pedigree breeder who got serious money for a heifer. I asked him how the mother was for milk as she had very poor milk in her breeding. He told me he had to rear the calf on a Jersey cow as the mother hadn't a drop. :D
Now the buyer will be fairly pissed off when he calves her down and she hasn't a drop, but hey ............. she was a smasher.

Ya a high profile breeder down here has fr cows for rearing pedigree calves but has them in his wife's herd number.

Have a ZAG ped lim heifer calved this year and had good milk for six weeks and now her calf has suffered from lack of milk. Really regret letting the Ai man putting in that ZAG straw when our own container was locked away when he called to serve her dam. Agree totally about the flawed system, personally I think the earlier calving is carrying too much weighing in the maternal side of the equation, would it not be better to have more milk and easier calving that calving 5 days earlier that her herd mates. The Ai stations are getting away with murder over bulls with high ratings and then dropping like stones and who looses out only the farmer.

1000% have 2 heifers out of tvr and mbp, out of 3 star cows, the mbp has a higish dau calving difficulty and really bad milk and good fertility, and Is a 3 star, the tvr is OK for milk, bad fertility and really good dau calv difficulty, and is 1 star

Had an inspection for this today, fairly straight forward, checking the little white tags in the ears and looking at how quite cattle were compared to what was submitted, thankfully all were well behaved. The inspector also wanted a copy of the the first carbon navigator submission doe back in 2016.

Icbf animal search App. I don't think you need to log into it. But could be wrong

I think the heifers have to be in a herd number which is signed up to ICBF.

Talking to a lad the other evening he has to buy two 4/5 star animals and as heifers are so expensive he is going to see if he can pick up two young cull cows, fatten them and then kill them around Christmas, he is of the opinion that he would be better off than give big money for maiden heifers at this time of year.

I heard that also, entered two 5 star lim x heifers, was very disappointed with the price, I sold a one star heifer same weight the following sat in an ordinary sale and made more

I bought four angus heifers, out of dairy stock last July, €630, genotyped them. They've filled out into nice heifers and went for €900 this week.

I think theres a shortage of genotyped heifers

Ya, Rang four Teagasc men in the county telling them I had spares if they had people looking. They were 300kg when I bought them, probably 360/370 now

Ur man was only interested in the cheapest way of filling his requirements

Had another man come and take 2 black whiteheads, 2yo, 450kg, €1200 apiece.

I wouldn’t agree with gouging anyone but I’d say he’d have given €1500 if I asked.

Ive one left to go, I’d say I could name my price come the last weekend in October. If I had more I wouldn’t be in a rush to get rid them. Lads that are short will have to panic at some stage.

No harm in ringin teagasc lads if you have spares and try and organise privately. These lads were happy enough to be helping out their clients

I've four 5 star genotyped heifers here in Cork I'm fattening for slaughter. Three are eurostar €150 and the other €122 from 440kg to 570kg in weight. €1200 for your 450kg heifers seems a good deal to me. I can't see myself making alot of money out of them at the factory.

It just shows there’s a demand from lads short on 5* heifers

Last one went this morning, €1200 again, no haggling again shows the farmer buying is happy too

What are eligible heifers going for?

Plenty of part time farmers don't like going into the mart. Buying in particular, these are all suckler men who generally only see cattle go one direction from the farm

Eligible heifers like yours weren’t making €2/kg 2-3 weeks ago from what i saw.

Fair play to you for getting what you did but i don’t think you would get the colour of it in a mart unless they’ve gone up massively in the last two weeks.

There’s a sale of fancy young heifers on LSL at Carnaross mart on now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,304 ✭✭✭jfh

I sold 2 smashing 5 star lmx heifers in ennis at the icbf sale, both 415 kgs, one was a bbx x lm, both rated over 130, got 890 & 920, I would have brought them home except I was too busy to go back up to collect.
I've another on donedeal for the last week & got one call, must be in the wrong part of the country

Haven’t been watching it, lads lose the run of themselves at those sales.
Doubtful if a lot of those U grade heifers would have much milk.
    I’d prefer a good square R grade.

Started watching this now. The auctioneer is announcing that 4/5 star heifers born this year are eligible for the BDGP scheme even though they’re not and it says BDGP NO on the mart board.
    Unbelievable stuff.

How nobody in the mart has pointed out his mistake to him is hard to understand.

Lot 100 there is lovely, but not worth €3700 at 440kg
I suppose the NO on the screen would be the argument that the info on screen is what you go by.

Had 3 bought last week, Lmx at 390kgs at 810 and 5star at 131 euro value, two Bwh at 480 kgs at 940 and 5 star at 140 and 130 euro value. A total of 120 heifers available in the mart and later in the sale they got cheaper as the lad buying for me said they made less than 2 a kg.

Talking to a person that would be in the know last week. They said that they had a meeting about it and it was mentioned, but there were 11 at the meeting and there is no decision. It is all up in the air. Absolutely no commitments were made about a continuation or a follow up scheme.

I couldn't continue with current reference number, I've only kept half the number of cows that Dad had in the beginning of the scheme so I've met my criteria for 4 and 5 star cows barely. I'd be happy to continue genotyping calves but I'm not going to tie myself to cow numbers for years again.
