Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

DPF fail, mechanic in Dublin sought

    Folks, failed nct as emmissions too high. Possibly blocked DPF, anyone know a good mechanics in North Dublin to look at this without bleeding me dry?

    If it failed in its smoke test there are plenty of possible things to look at... where are you based??

    Why do you thinking a dpf problem?
    Btw, diesels undergo a smoke test, not an emissions test.

    jag X type, 2009. Based in Dublin 7.

    Sorry must be smoke test then. I say dpf because that's what everyone has told me. Probably clogged up etc

    What is the smoke reading on the NCT sheet?
    Did you put any dipethane in and give it a good hard run before the test to clear out the 'smoke' before it got tested?

    Smoke is twice the limit. Didnt put dipethane, would that resolve when it's so high?

    Can advanced pitstop sort this or would they be too dear?

    Diptane your only man - worked a treat on my 10 mondeo. Just buy a bottle and run it for a week or so before the test. if you fail again then look at doing something but honestly its your cheapest option and theres a good chance it will work. If you DPF is actually blocked the car would most likely show an engine fault and go into limp home mode. Its probably just residual carbon in the exhaust system.

    Your motor factor will have it its a tenner a bottle

    I don't see how a blocked dpf would cause a smoke test to fail on high opacity.

    Blocked dpf would be obvious. Car would struggle to run. Plus there would have to be earning lights/fault codes. Are you sure your dpf is still present in the car? Removed previously?

    Best advice would be to stop guessing and have a mechanic diagnose the fault. Excessive smoke can be down to a number of faults from clogged air filter to faulty injectors. Honestly it will be cheaper in the long run to have it diagnosed properly.

    I called advanced pitstop who said they don't do emissions although I said it had failed smoke test. Not sure who to call now. Have to sort by next Tuesday, prob try dipethane

    Your best bet is to take the car to a diesel injection specialist as opposed to a place like advance (who wouldn't normally be any good with a fault like this).

    If a diesel engine smokes excessively the blocked DPF is the result, not the cause.

    Best advice I can give is to find a local mechanic and if they are good, use them for all jobs.

    That's not to say there aren't decent mechanics any of the advance pitstops , but an independent mechanic would be better.

    Advance pit stop would be akin to going to Tesco for a pack of screwdrivers vs going to a dedicated hardware store.
    You'll probabaly get the screwdrivers, but you'll get much better ones in a hardware store.

    Where are you based? I got sprinter injectors rebuilt in Dublin last year at "Diesel Injector Repair and Diesel Injection Service in Northwest Business Park, Dublin 15". I would definitely recommend them. I just left the van there in the morning and collected it fixed the following night.

    Any diesel injection specialist should be able to diagnose the issue but you might need to leave the car with them for a bit. Your best bet is to pick up a place to advertises that they can test and repair injectors as they are one of the key components. But it could be anything like blocked inlet manifold, broken swirl flaps etc. etc.
