Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

- Rosemarys Baby - only saw this in the past few years and was surprised by how shockingly effective it was :eek:

Recent and Decent- The Thing (Prequel) - I think this gets an unfair rap because of its comparison to the Carpenter classic. It plays as a prequel, but if watched in that order it unfortunately takes some of the surprise out of the 1982 version.
- It Follows - this one just freaked me the hell out. Everything from the music, the camera moves, even the premise was creepy as hell.

Never heard of "The Invitation". That's added to the list. I agree with the "The Thing" prequel but a last minute decision to change from practical effects to banal looking CGI really didn't help it. This video shows the amount of effort that went into the effects that were then dropped and I don't know why.

None of the evil deads in the comedy section
I'm actually not that big of a fan of any of the Evil Deads, none of the ones I watched really worked for me (think I've seen 1, 2, Army of Darkness and the remake........actually, that might be all of them?!). I did really enjoy the TV show, but haven't finished it yet. Could be the inclusion of Xena Warrior Princess though. Everything is immediately better when you add Lucy Lawless to the mix

Yep, I saw that before actually, a fierce amount of incredible work for it to simply be cut! :mad: I didn't want to bring that up in my comment, as its one of the big negatives in the movie. Its not that the CGI is awful by any stretch of the imagination, but compared to the practical efforts, its night and day. And think of how much more amazing they'd have looked in camera after lighting and post-production!!
I think studios generally balk at using practical effects now, because of the extra time and effort and thinking people only want flashy CGI.
I feel like it all kicked off with Jurassic Park really. I remember seeing the making-of years ago and Phil Tippett demonstrating his stop-motion dinos, only to be supplanted by ILMs CG dinos. In the end they still used Phils work to reference the movements of the dinos in CG, but feel like that breakthrough was the writing on the wall sadly.
Its such a pity too, as practical effects work (include make-up effects) can date a lot slower than CGI. Some CGI can look incredible at the time of release, but in a few short years can become laughable. The best practical effects work still stands up even now!0 -

I actually quite liked the recent Thing remake, apart from that annoying CGI. Such a shame the practical effects weren't left in it. Maybe a future Blu Ray release?0 -

Ah you're very welcome, but I really just used the JustWatch website and tried to pull out the ones that I thought were good or at least decent!
A couple (as mentioned) are on multiple services, in case you only have Netflix or Amazon but not both.
Pity that many of the "classics" are really only available to rent or perhaps on Sky/NowTV.
Shudder, which specialises in horror titles, actually has very few of the old old classics, but has some newer classic (90s onwards) and newer indy and foreign horror titles.0 -
