Welcome to the forum! We're a bunch of arseholes so it'll take a bit of time to get used to us! :p.

Nah, just messing, we're grand. You'll definitely be an interesting addition to the community as we are pro-less.

I'll make it down this weekend for some casuals anyway. Its been far too long since I've properly played SFIV (although, thanks to Azza, yesterday, I've learnt that my win ratio to him is 1:10 so that isn't any good). So, I main Akuma so who is your main?

You guys shouldn`t put yourselves down, there is only one difference between ireland and the rest of the world when it comes to fighting games and that is the lack of arcades, if ireland had the arcades everybody else had we would definitely be up there with the best of them.

I go to japan once a year, and you see the same players in the arcades everyday playing 4 or 5 hours a day, this is why those players you see on youtube are that good.

For ireland to become as good as everybody else, we need to start meeting up more regularly than once a week, although meeting up once a week offline is really good, its not enough.

The ranking battles should be as regular as twice a month both in belfast and in dublin, I know a lot of people are busy with work or uni or school, but regular play is the quickest way to get better.

What about the arcades in dublin? I heard DR Quarkys has a bunch of new tekken machines, i think it would be easy enough to convince them to get a street fighter machine considering the amount of players who are interested in the game.

Has anybody ever tried to contact them about getting a Street Fighter IV machine?

that place is dodgy, xgc serves us well and since sf4 the scene has rocketed off. We have a some great players as well.
I played sf3 religiously but have not touched it in a while, would love to catch some games, some one will need to bring a laptop.

Even when Dublin did have an abundance of arcades Quirkeys had a terrible reputation for not maintaining machines, etc. Barneys was the arcade of choice because you could just walk up to the employees and they'd sort stuff out quick, and would listen to the players. Now it's just slot machines. :(

Not the mention the fact Quirkey's is a nasty environment in general.

This is all well and good for those in concentrated areas of SF players, but I'm pretty much Clare/the west's only player, and I don't think there is much of a community here. I'll be in Dublin for the next ranbat, but it's a bit of a journey with work and college it's difficult getting up.

Yeah, I think people would prefer going to XGC (or any other better arcade for that matter)

Yeah, if there was a nice arcade in the city I'd prob already be popping in and out once or twice a week.

I agree that the arcade can sometimes be a very unfriendly place to visit, especially when you have a bunch of scumbags who just go there to cause trouble, londons biggest arcade the Trocadero had this problem for many years and still has its fair share of trouble making teenagers that go there, but nobody ever causes trouble around the games, i can`t imagine too much happening in dublin, there is also the maintenance of the machines which most establishments seem to neglect, which trocadero was also guilty of, but we came together and ended up buying our own sticks and buttons for the machines, and that worked out just fine, sure its a bit annoying to buy the sticks and buttons as well as having to play to play, but thats what we did.

Anyway having street fighter 4 in an open environment has many advantages, players can go and play anytime of the day and don`t need to arrange to meet up, also in such a good location like central dublin an arcade would attract a lot more players into the scene, alot of students come here from overseas and if there was arcade for them to visit i am sure that these players would find there way into the community, i see it happen in london all the time, students come to study. and sometimes if your lucky enough you end up with top players from other countries who might spend 1-3 years studying and playing games, but without an arcade these players can come and go without even knowing the is scene for fighting games, having an arcade allows these players to get in touch more easily and become apart of the community.

For example, i am irish and i didn`t know anything about you guys until recently, thats how how hard our community is to find, we need to change that.

I think having an arcade with street fighter 4 in dublin would change the scene here completely, there is no reason why dublin shouldn`t have a street fighter 4 machine, especially from what i hear about dr quarkys having 3 or 4 brand new tekken 6 machines in linbergh cabinets. It would be easy enough for them to put sf4 in one of those cabinets.

Anyway it would definitely be worth looking into.

Its not easy living in a place with no competition, i guess for players like you online is one of the only options, and also travelling whenever you can to play, a lot of respect goes out to players like yourself, its not easy living in the middle of nowhere and having nobody to play. But online play these days is very good and i would recommend it to anybody who lives out in the sticks lol. My friend ryan was living in germany when street fighter 4 came out and the only competition he had was through online play and occasionally playing offline whenever he could, but its definitely good enough to learn how to play and get to a decent level, but nothing beats offline play.

The main problem with Irish arcades is that they're mostly overrun with gambling machines, and there are only a handful left anyway (literally).

Adding to this, Quirkey's have AFAIK long had a reputation for neglecting their machines, and not shown any willingness to upgrade their Tekken cabs either.
I'm looking into the how's of running an arcade, but it's pretty terrifying...

  • Registered Users Posts: 836 ✭✭✭Leprekaun

I'd definitely support the idea of getting an SFIV machine. Unfortunately, as some people previously mentioned, I don't think there is any real chance of getting Dr. Quirkeys going with it. I went in there a few months ago and the ratio of gambling machines to the arcades was huge. They may as well turn it into a Casino so I would very much doubt that the owner would be up for getting an SFIV cabinet. I had a crazy idea a couple months ago of if we all chipped in to get an SFIV cabinet, it might work out well but in the end, considering it costs $120,000 so even if we had 100 people (which we don't) thats still $1200 per person so there is no chance of that happening.

There is another way ofcourse but it'll require a few very dedicated people to work on it. It may good to consider writing a proposal to some big games/entertainment shop (GAME, GameStop, HMV, Virgin, Xtra-Vision etc.) to fund it but honestly, there may be a strong following of fighting games in Ireland but its hard to compare it to the likes of FIFA and the FPS games (Halo, Counter Strike or Modern Warfare 2) so obviously, business-wise, they'd have more interest in funding something related to those games over fighting games so you'd have a real hard time convincing them to go ahead with it. An example of this, although we don't know if they did try to get sponsors, is the SFIV tournaments run by XGC itself. There weren't any sponsors connected to the SFIV tournaments but with other tournaments like KillZone 2, Sony stepped up.

I got to know one of the guys from XGC that was managing the SFIV & Halo 3 tournaments so I guess I could ask him what would their approach involve in getting sponsors for their tournaments. Maybe we could consider forming a partnership (fighting game community, XGC and a sponsor) which would be great but like I said, it very much depends on the few dedicated people willing to put the time and effort in to get the sponsors. I think there would definitely be a few people here who definitely have a strong interest in really forming something but I get the feeling that they wouldn't have the time to do it (e.g.: work, academics, family commitments, etc.).

I'd like to think that maybe someone with your experience would take the time to contribute to matchup threads or even evaluation movies of the players - I mean, I'm a casual player who's never researched into all the gory details but I know enough to get by - I bought the game after being inspired by so many tournament movies between the professionals but I never tried to act as the YouTube armchair critic like a lot of people who seem to think they know everything about anything from watching movies of the game and feel they can judge people.

I watch the Irish tourny videos on and off but I fear commenting on some of them as I have never played SF4 offline, for example. Sure, I can still contribute an opinion but I know nothing of the game at that deep a level despite having played SF4 about 6-7 Months and many SF titles previously, all the way back to SF2.

It'd be nice to get your insight into some of the fights or players along the way and I'd be curious to know if you ever record your gameplay, or have any past movies to show, or even just recommendations ;)

I don`t watch too many match videos, and i have not really seen too much of sf4 on youtube, i don`t have much to contribute to sf4 as yet because i am just a beginner myself and learniing with everybody else.

Back in 2003 before youtube, movies were very hard to come by, so i watched almost everything back then and appreciated videos more as there was so few of them, nowadays there is so much footage i wouldn`t even know where to start, my friends keep bugging me to learn the game properly and its only now that ive started to take an interest in the game, just last night i was talking to prodigal son on msn and i told him i was thinking of changing character for the next tournament, perhaps droping ryu for akuma, because we have another 3 on 3 tournament coming up on the 17th and in the last tournament i got beat by players i wouldn`t normally lose to, but the advice ryan gave to me was just to practice and make ryu and as good he can be, which basically means to know your character and know the match ups, that comes from playing and practicing in training mode most of the time, watching videos is good because you can pick up a lot, but the real learning comes from practicing in training mode and working out your own tactics and strategies and working on perfecting your execution. Execution is vital, when you create an opening in a match completing that one combo could be the difference between winning or losing a round a match or perhaps even a tournament so practicing is the key.

Ive never been one for posting strategies or guides or anything like that, but if you guys ever have any questions about things you don`t understand ask and i will always try to help, there isn`t enough knowledgeable players who post on the forums these days, i remember back in the day when shoryuken.com had less than 100 members on its forum and at least 10 of those members were experts, so information and help was always available, i think too many idiots are on the forums these days and its hard to sift through posts and find what your actually looking for,

But i do help when i can, you just don`t see it. I met a very good player from belfast a ryu player, his name is mike, he sent me a few matches of his recent final where he played against a very solid looking cammy and i gave him a few tips, but yeah i will try to keep an eye on the irish player videos and offer advice when i see where improvements can be made.

That would be Mike "Newtype" and the Cammy is "Coblecog" who posts here. Both amazing players. They also fought in Dublin at our last tournament and it came down to the same final.
