Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

The ps4 controller are alright but only last 8 hours because of the light which is gone in the new ps5 controller.I went through a good few ps4 controllers.

The Xbox controller better built and last why longer just don't like stick layout for FPS games.I just hope I can use my play and charge kit batteries from my current controller on the new one.
I really wished they'd just have an option on the dashboard to turn off the light rather than just dimming it.

Its crazy that some people have to dismantle the controller to unhook the lightbar.

I've found you have more chance of the analog sticks or buttons failing / crapping out before a battery degrades to a bad state.

I see the benefit of having batteries as a backup / quick change etc, but they really should have made the plug and charge kit the standard vs a paid extra.
The console is likely to cost upwards of €500. Additional extras have long been the norm since the 360 days. You can choose to get them or not, it's a good way of keeping the base price down while still giving people choice if they feel they really need it.

Still exciting to see some Series X gameplay. Third party only from what I believe. 1st party stuff during the summer.

Wise move. Not sure how more demos of Gears 5 and Minecraft would go down. Even if they were to show some Halo and Forza, I'm sure they look spectacular, theres still a bit of a meh feeling to it. I've probably been around too long, maybe the kids will go ape **** for some more Halo and Forza.

Show.me some Cybepunk and I'll genuinely be excited. I've a feeling Series X is going to be the place to play it. Even ahead of PC.

Microsoft seem to be tight with CD Projekt Red re Cyberpunk, the themed console and confirming that series X will get a free next gen update so I think they'll show a lot of it.

Anyone looking to stream the event in 4k, I read it's only youtube that has the 4k stream! :)

    So it's 4pm here then?

    Yes, 4pm, 4k on Youtube.

No idea if Mixer has a mixpot this time around, but no harm lashing it on in the background and watching it on Youtube

Is there a way to watch this in 4k on the console? Youtube app on it only gives me option up to 1080p, it would be weird if they don't have a way to watch it in 4k on a console. The console I'm using is a One X so no reason it can't do it given that I regularly watch Netflix, Prime, and Disney+ in 4k.

My Xbox gives me the option to view in 4k. You're definitely trying to view a 4k clip?

That would be it, I assumed it was 4k because the same clip was available in 4k on the site but I was wrong, thanks.

I missed this anything good shown? I caught the end where the guy said no loading screens in his horror game and you can travel between two worlds.

Yeah, nothing really got my attention there. The dino game looked a bit of fun, but that was about it. There didn't seem to be a whole lot of gameplay, either.

It was pretty underwhelming to say the least. Nothing that I wouldn't expect to see on the Xbox One X.

Hopefully they are starting at a low base and building up from there.

Truth be told, we won't see games that are purely next gen until we start seeing first party games, in July. Even then, MS have committed to a couple of years of Xbox One support, so games won't look truly next gen for a couple of years.

At a guess, I'd see MSs efforts on BC being played up more in the future, i.e. the best way to play your current gen games.

To an extent, is Smart Delivery acting as a brake to progress to the initial slew of 3rd party games?

If you give an undertaking to deliver a game that will launch on One and will scale up for Series X, then you probably won't see blinding "next gen" differences?

I dont get this argument. Are PC games held back by supporting a minimum spec?

May have said it before but I really dont see the mass appeal for this console

It reminds me of the thought process behind steam machines tbh

I would think that PCs are held back by consoles and lower end machines alright.

Yes, PC users are held back by the limitations of the CPU on current consoles. Developers have develop to the lowest common denominator which is obviously the consoles with their weak CPUs, which is totally understandable.

PC users get the benefit of nicer visuals and higher frame rates but that's it. They don't get more expansive worlds or intelligent AI etc. Those improvements will only come when developers are exclusively focused on next gen which is probably a year or two away.

We may see some first party titles before then that will fully take advantage of the hardware.

It was a **** show no doubt about it, but you're not seriously suggesting this is a true reflection of the xbox 3rd party line up? We all know there are big title multiplat games coming and they're going to look phenomenal on the series x.

The issue here is with xbox marketing hyping this up as series x gameplay and it was further from the truth. And the piss poor games on show.

This doesnt equate to the Series X is shoite.

Tbf I never said the console is ****e.

I said I don't see the mass appeal of it.

I can buy and play all of these games elsewhere in a multitude of ways.

That's why a compared it to the thought process of the Steam Machines.

It's ultimately a glorified PC IMO

To an extent, yes, they can be. Not quite to the same extent, I'll grant you. But there would still be a trade off in trying to design a PC game to be able to run on the most basic of machines on current market.

Obviously the Series X will be able to avail of better frame rates and load times etc. In the same way as my One X is better at these things compared to original One.

I've no doubt that Series X will be the best place to play these games and that the gap will widen over time. I also think that first party developers might be the ones to be able to show a stronger divergence between the two consoles.

And if you have been developing something as a third party developer in an earlier stage of Project Scarlett and are buying into Smart Delivery, it might be too early to expect jaw dropping differences.

We've always had cross gen titles at launch. The difference is with smart delivery you dont have to buy the game twice. Not seeing the negativity tbh.

Yes and yes. This has been the xbox model for a long while now. They sell subscriptions, not hardware. The hardware is merely a means of accessing their subscriptions.

The fact that they are delivering a beast of a machine, up there with a high spec pc, for which to access their services has received nothing but high praise both within the industry and the gaming community.

You dont want to buy it, that's fine and actually that's the point really that you have that choice.

I'm not negative about it at all. I'm saying that I think it might delay some of the third parties from launching with something that really shows the consoles full potential.

With One X, we got patches afterwards which boosted the game on that console. Might see something similar here.

I've always felt there was a blurring of lines between console generations. I noticed it when I got my Xbox 360 and the same for the PS4. By the tail end of a console generation developers become so adept to using a piece of hardware that they can really make it shine. They are still getting to grips with new hardware so generally big improvements are seen by the second wave of games.

This had become even more pronounced this time around with the introduction of the X and Pro.

Definitely. And with next gen games being supported on the One X for a year there is little incentive to upgrade to a series X in year 1. You're going to be talking the difference between 1080p 60fps/4k 30fps on One X versus 4k 60fps with ray tracing on the series X. Many people will be happy to make do with what they have for a year. But what a lot of people misunderstand is that this is an intentional consumer friendly move from Xbox. Keep subscribing to game pass, it's all good.

Yeah with Game Pass and other subs it's much more in Microsoft's interests to make the generation step as seamless as possible rather that trying to grab a lead in market share at the start of the new generation. It's one arguable benefit of moving towards as-a-service type gaming.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,068 ✭✭✭Tipsy McSwagger

I’ll be buying it for the brilliant loading times. Plus add in gamepass and I won’t need to buy a game for a while. I’m actually really excited to get it.

One good thing that's coming out of that reveal is that Microsoft has basically learnt their lesson in terms of managing our expectations. They've acknowledged that they got their messaging wrong on this, as Aaron Greenburg, head of games marketing, has been asking what people think is "gameplay" in terms of trailers, etc. I can't imagine that they'll make the same mistake again, they've been very very good at learning from their mistakes over the last few years.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,511 ✭✭✭marcbrophy

In what way have I got a different meaning of the word Gameplay than xbox marketing does?
    What am I missing here?
Honestly, if it's anything other than how the game plays on a screen for the end user, then they are being deliberately obtuse and can fúck right off!

There actually was more gameplay in there than you'd think, but even so, they definitely sold it wrong. The one good thing about it is that they've acknowledged that they screwed it up. I'd imagine that they'll improve on it, they've been pretty good about correcting their mistakes in the last few years.

Update on backwards compatibility. Seems like they're able to double the frame rate in select games, so if it runs at 60fps already, then it'll be running at 120fps. Also, 100,000 hours of testing already completed, thousands of games already working on Series X

    See here.
