Yeah I think it's fair to say you can compete at a top level with a balanced plant based diet.

Incidentally as a Man Utd fan I try to keep it quiet Chris Smalling is a vegan, probably not the best example :D

There are many American Football players in the NFL turned vegan, and even more who are about 80-90% plant based, but not fully vegan.

Tom Brady, widely considered the greatest player of all time favours the latter approach and a lot of players in the league have followed his lead.

There's a link to such an article at the bottom of OP but copy and paste is needed.
Some defensive players can weigh almost 300lb in NFL, a very physically demanding sport.

I wonder does Tom Brady meditate? As far as I know his Brazilian wife does TM. Maybe more a game changer than diet.

Gone to crap ever since :)

Nothing to do with being vegan though, just turned into a wally

Think diet is very over-rated myself for elite athletes, not saying Vegan is good or not, don't have a clue.

Just think when your so genetically gifted, you can get away not eating perfect, I wouldn't be looking at elite athletes vegan diets for inspiration, they could eat chicken nuggets all day and still be the incredible

eg Phelps, Usain Bolt, Le Bron James etc

Diet is hugely important for any sportsperson, at elite level even more so.

    Genetics > Diet

Most athletes that win Gold would not have the best genetics, they just want to be winners and work that bit harder and take any small percentage they can get, nutrition being the area where least effort would give greatest results.

I never heard of Tom Brady before today but I'd be fairly sure he meditates.

Most if not all competitors in any sport meditate.

I believe he does. He has his own company specialising in nutrition and lifestyle advice for athletes. When you can play in to your 40’s in probably the most demanding position in any sport it gives you a lot of credibility in that regard.

There are some great stories around veganism in the NFL if anyone cares to do a bit of googling. Look up the Tennessee Titans in particular.

Joe is a weird one. He is against factory farming and all types of dairy but he just can't get past the hurdle of plant protein being adequate.

Also he seems to bizarrely think hunting his own food is more ethical

Kendrick Farris made the switch to a vegan diet after his son was born September 2014.

Since then Farris has packed on more muscle, moved up a weight class, and at 94kg he set an American Record total at the 2016 Olympic Trials in Salt Lake City.
During the Olympic Team Trials, Farris set a new USA record and a personal best by lifting 800 pounds.
In May 2016 he broke the American lifting record for clean-and-jerk with three lifts totaling 377 kg (743 lbs).

30 years old and produced some of the best lifts of his or anyone's life after going vegan

Lads, Clarence Kennedy and Kendrick Farris are vegan athletes to be commended in the strength sphere.

Patrick Baboumian is a nobody in the strongman world though, and he most certainly did not win the WSM in 2011.
