Higher specs = longer life?

the processor and the build itself (including screen) are the two things you're unlikely to be able to upgrade, so maxing out on those is important for squeezing the longest life you can.

making sure the ram is upgradeable (and to whst extent) and the battery is replaceable if need be would be reasonable checks to carry out before purchasing.

you can swap in an ssd at any stage in any laptop so that neednt be a factor for you now- though its probably the first thing anyone would tell you to do for performance.

what spec is you old one, what will you use the new one for, now and into the future? both useful to give context for any other advice.

That's excellent, very clear and detailed, thanks.

The current one is a Toshiba Satellite C660-1D7 15.6" Laptop (Intel Core i3-380M Processor, 4GB RAM, 640GB HDD, Windows 7 Home Premium)

From the label on the box:
    Intel Core i3-380M (2.53GHz) 1.066MHz
    2048MB RAM 1066MHz/ +2048MB
    650GB HDD(5400RPM) SATA
    39.6CM/15.6 INCH TRUBRITE HD LED
    DVD-SUPER-MULTI DRIVE (2-LAYER)
    W-LAN (802.11B/G/N)
    WEBCAMERA
    MICROSOFT WIN7 HOME PREMIUM 64BIT

    More specs here.

It'd be used to browse the internet, stream films, Skype, work on large spreadsheets, etc., store various files (both text and images), etc. but if it has better functionalities I might start using it for other things.

Does it have to be 15"?
Not many laptops have dvd drives, and a lot that do are 17".
Would something like this Acer work. https://store.acer.com/en-ie/acer-nitro-xz2-curved-gaming-monitor-nitro-xz272p-black-nx-hm1ek-003

About the external drive enclosures. They are great for using to transfer files, but I wouldn't trust it long term especially with an old hard drive. External hard drives are are getting cheap too. You can easily get 1tb for around €50.

No, anything 15.6'' and over would do (I knew anything smaller than that would definitely not have a number pad).

That's good to know about the enclosures, too - if it's ok for transferring files, that's all I'd be needing it for, really.

I'll take a look at those Acers, thanks.

If anyone else is also looking for a 17'' laptop with numerical keypad and DVD drive under €850, there are two models in Currys at the moment. Great storage, too, 1TB HDD and either 125 or 256GB SSD.

Thanks Empty Tree, I might reconsider the Lenovo, but I've had recent reports of different people who had them die on them or go on a boot loop for no reason - not sure if it's an issue with the newer models. They would have been work computers, too.
there's a problem at moment with lenovo

They've also been going on boot loops, among others. Not great trying to boards a plane with a laptop that won"t stay off...

It might be early days, but I'm happy with my HP so far.

Why the DVD just as a matter of interest?
haven't actually used one for about 15 years so just wondering why the need for one in 2020
